Am I the only one who is feeling comfy with Windows 7 right now? It has only been two years since Windows 7 released. Isn't there usually a 4-5 year gap?
I enjoy my windows 7 too.

I don't want to upgrade yet, I'm having too much fun.

I would be impressed but you have to go making it exclusive to the computer meaning I still have to have a 360 just to play with my friends and if you're just gonna do this microsoft then why bother with 360s now? it seems your just phasing them out at this point
Actually it seems more like phasing PC games out. Am I the only person that sees this as a bad thing for PC gaming? We'll get the same cookie-cutter console version, where you can't adjust settings, or do anything that makes PC gaming worth it.

It'll be the same console experience. Why have a gaming computer that can run these games if you aren't going to take advantage of it?
This is it right here. You won't get a PC port anymore, you'll be told that if you wanna play it on PC, then play the 360 version on your PC. You will be using the 360 controller on your PC, not keyboard and mouse. Maybe if you're lucky they'll sell you a control pack DLC enabling that support but it won't be the norm.

The only PC games we will get will be games that are PC exclusives.

While this is a cool idea, my one concern is that it will prevent some titles having a proper PC version made. Why bother, just play the Xbox one right?
That's what has me kind of nervous about this. While it will be a big benefit to many, I'm more a PC gamer than an Xbox one. So what happens if PC or multiplatform developers, Bethesda for example, drop a PC release because they think PC gamers can just buy the Xbox version?

I doubt Microsoft would do that without some extra charges (other than XBL or Games for Windows Live). It sounds awesome, but they want people to pay for their console.

If Microsoft can create a 360 emulator that runs on modern hardware, so can those who make emulators for free. Why upgrade to Windows Desktop Phone 8 just so you can BUY an emulator when you could stay with Windows 7 and download one for free.

They've realized returns on software vs hardware, then doubly realized that they're a software company.

Stickin' to what you're good at!

But, what about the technical stuff?
360's dont use the same processor architecture as normal PCs.

Interesting. About time it happened, really.

I find it difficult to believe that PAST games would be playable without a kind of emulator, though.

Most importantly, this makes access to the possibility of mods MUCH more prominent.

That's quite an interesting idea, I'm all for it.

Also, it would be nice if we could play them at higher resolutions than 1080p, with antialiasing and texture filters.

If they dare to charge subscription fees merely to play the games offline in singleplayer, then the whole idea can just pack in in right now as far as I'm concerned.

Hmm. Sounds intriguing, yet also a little odd.

I mean, what kind of system specs would this require?

The Xbox 360 and PC both use the same dev kit, so it's not a huge stretch, but even so the specifics of Xbox development require considerations that don't matter on a PC.

Now, the graphics hardware in the 360 is basically a prototype ATI directX 10 chip, somewhere between directX 9 and 10 in features...

So that shouldn't present a huge problem for anyone with DirectX 10 graphics hardware (and moderate performance... It's about equivalent to an upper midrange 2000 HD series part).

However, the 360 has a triple core IBM PowerPC cpu... (with hyperthreading, so 6 logical cores total)

The PowerPC architecture is quite different to X86, which means some kind of emulation is needed to pull this off.
And that suggests the CPU requirements for this will be quite demanding...
(And probably would at a minimum require a triple core CPU even without the processor architecture differences)

anyway, aside from that, 360 controllers already work on PC, so that's not going to be a huge issue. (Kinect works in principle too...)

An... Interesting, if slightly dubious rumour at the end of the day.

I find it a little hard to believe. Microsoft has been screwing over their PC base- you know, the people who pay their mortgages- consistently for so long right now, especially as regards gaming. And as of the last ten years or so, they never met a feature they wouldn't rather sell you in a more expensive version of their software. Give up the cost of an XBox 360? I'm thinking if there's truth to this, it will mean one of three things:

1) Sure, you can do it- if you buy Windows 8 Ultimate Super Fire Dragon Punch edition. ($499)
2) Yeah, about that subscription fee... Howza bout you pay us $20 a month to play the games you bought in single player with a kludgy mess of buggy network code louring over your computer as you do so?
3) Hey, we're pleased as punch to be able to offer our loyal PC customers the option of playing XBox 360 games on their computers. And leading out from that announcement, we'd like to introduce... TA-DA!... The Xbox 720!

Maybe I'm being cynical. But dear God, big M, have you ever earned my cynicism.

Wait a second, you're telling me I can spend the cash to upgrade my computers operating system so I can use it to perform a function I already have a device for?!?

AND probably have it be a worse experience because of the natural problems that come with PC gaming (I.E. compatibility issues).

Well gee, now that you mention it, that sounds FANTASTIC. Except for the part where it doesnt. At all. I have a Gaming PC for the various PC games out there - which is good, except when I run into the plethora of issues PC gaming brings. I have a my consoles to alleviate this issue - I find the controller to be a lot tighter than the mouse-keyboard combo, and console gaming to just be easier (since I dont have to download, install, fiddle with the graphics settings, etc, etc.).

Bringing console games to the PC, without any of the benefits of a console, is just a bad idea. Focus more on making Windows 8 a better operating system, rather than adding features that are, quite literally, useless. The PC's that will have the capability of running Xbox games probably wont have an interest in Xbox games. Or, if they do, probably already own an Xbox... Not to mention that the 360 doesn't have that much longer left in its lifespan - we will probably see a new Xbox before Windows 8 is replaced by Windows 9. So while the feature is nice for some PR (if its true), it'll more than likely not be of any significance.

Pay a subscription fee for Xbox Live on PC?
Fuck that, and fuck Microsoft for thinking I'm stupid enough to pay for that.

And to those who think that they will be able to enjoy all the benefits of PC hardware with their 360 titles know this: you're dead wrong.

If you pop an Xbox 360 title into your computer, then you're only going to get the graphical content that was scaled to the Xbox 360. That means:

-Lower Resolution
-Lower Definition Textures
-Limited access to lighting/shading effects
-DirectX 9 tech (10 and upcoming 11 are MUCH more efficient and have more supported rendering tech)

Even if the title is a multiplatform launch, the publisher isn't going to do something stupid like put ALL of the multiplatform graphical data onto every disc; especially when the native system for that copy (excluding PC, obviously) CAN'T FUCKING USE ALL OF IT.

Keyboard and Mouse? Unless Microsoft creates a good emulator for the 360 analog sticks, the games probably won't play since they're programmed for a specific gamepad (fortunately...you can plug your existing 360 controllers into a PC! Only $60 each! [local price at my Best Buy])

I guess Microsoft still thinks that PC gaming can still be slowly corralled into a proprietary system owned by them (think "Apple Garden" but with Microsoft at the helm and involving PC gaming). If not, then they're going to try to drag PC gamers into an Xbox-like system that they can still control.

Wonder how that's going to impact future titles that get sucked into the GFWL cesspit?

wait...

being able to play fable II on my pc?!?!?

this will be interesting..

however if there is a subscription fee, and there is no way to play with console users, then i'm not really interested..

The Xbox360 uses a PowerPC based processor which is binary incompatible with X86 Processors without a recompile (and probably a re-factor of certain chunks of code).
Unless they found a way to emulate PowerPC processor tech without the 10x increase in performance required for emulation, this isn't happening.
Not to mention the fact that most graphics programming for the Xbox360 is very gpu specific (to get as much performance as possible) so the number of gpu's that these games would work with would be slim.
The closest I can think of them doing is an OnLive-like service, which would be under the games-for-windows moniker (which no-one would use becuase gfwl sucks hard).

There's no chance this will even remotely happen.

I've always wonder why Microsoft doesn't introduce one online service for all its games (be it console or PC).
They already have. Live is a single, online service consistent across both 360 and GFW. Sign in on one with the same details and all Live friends are there. Achievements on one platform show up on the other.

If there's no additional charge for playing offline, and if it's possible to play old 360 games rather than only new ones, and if my laptop can handle something like Fable without exploding, I'd look into this.

Oh cool, now we can play games with mediocre graphics on our PCs too!

That would suck. Something like this works better if it isn't owned by the platform it is being developed on. If steam was owned by Microsoft, it would have never gone to OS X or PS3. Can't we all just use steam and be happy?

I call bullshit. No way MS will phase out the Xbox.
They won't be phasing it out. What it will do is sell there Windows 8 and allow for more software sales. Gaming PCs still cost way more than an Xbox. I know I will probably want to get rid of my 360 to get Windows 8. I just hope they do it well and maybe let you scale the graphics up to higher PC like resolutions. They also need to let you play with people on the 360, that is a must.
Xbox games only have one graphics setting: shit. They cant be scaled up or scaled down like PC games can, because they only run on a certain system, with certain components, which are shit. I am not going to use a $1200 gaming computer with four times the GFX capability of an xbox play xbox games. That is retarded.

Whats the point of this? All it does is make it so developers can be lazy. Now instead of having to port a game to PC they will just tell you to use the 360 version.
