I've always wonder why Microsoft doesn't introduce one online service for all its games (be it console or PC).
They already have. Live is a single, online service consistent across both 360 and GFW. Sign in on one with the same details and all Live friends are there. Achievements on one platform show up on the other.
I'm suggesting something that was actually allow 360 and PC players to play together cross-platform. They have discussed it before, but as far as I understand they don't have anything that can do it yet.

This sounds like a crappy Steve Ballmer idea. MS is far too wedded to the licensed software model that built the company and too fixated on trying to get a do-everything productivity platform into every consumer device. Let's hope it's not at the expense of innovation with Kinect.

The Xbox360 uses a PowerPC based processor which is binary incompatible with X86 Processors without a recompile (and probably a re-factor of certain chunks of code).
Unless they found a way to emulate PowerPC processor tech without the 10x increase in performance required for emulation, this isn't happening.
They could probably cut down the resource requirements by using a dual-boot set up so the full Windows OS doesn't load up, only the modified 360 OS. That'd eliminate the hassle of OS to OS emulation and free up an arseload of system resources... but that still leaves the problem of incompatible binaries which might be able to be overcome using dynamic recompiling but even with good code that can lead to stability issues.

Not to mention the fact that most graphics programming for the Xbox360 is very gpu specific (to get as much performance as possible) so the number of gpu's that these games would work with would be slim.
Ack! I forgot the 360 allows for direct GPU programming instead of using APIs. Emulating that would take fairly grunty GPUs to run it.

Windows 8 is looking so horribly dumbed down and gimmicky I think I will pass on it. First time since 1995 that I have not been excited about a new Win coming out :(

And for playing 360 games; I'd rather lie on the couch in front of my big screen TV, MSFT...

I was thinking why would they want to do that. Then I started wondering why they wouldn't want to do that. A closed platform for games? One that extends to PC games. Well, I guess consoles really could overtake and eliminate pc games.
Or merge them. Because when you get down to basics the difference between PC and console is zero.

I'm going to remain hopeful that this might be the opening stage of a merging between Console and PC gaming.

if its compatible with the controller the keyboard and the mouse ... would be nice to be able to switch them up on the fly as needed. pc like mods would be welcome.

Correct me if I'm wrong but wouldn't that mean that either every Windows 8 machine will have to have the same hardware as the 360 or developers would have to make the 360 versions capable of running on multiple types of hardware (basically making them PC ports)?

Calling this one a lie until further evidence.

So Xbox games on GWFL? You're not selling me anything here Microsoft. Especially with that extra online charge. And the console games cost. And the need to get a pad. And having to buy W8 as well.
Actually the prices for online markplace are waaaaaaay down that they're almost equal to a hard copy. Alot of games are only 20$. Some are still more expensive then a new copy like Civilization Revolution which is 40$ on live markplace but 20$ for a hardcopy. They're no longer the scary monster prices like 80$.

Wouldn't that give an unfair advantage to one side, the side that has superior controls?

But on Steam...they're 75%-88% off. And without GWFL. And no online charge.

So...still a simple choice.

I'm not really sure who this is aimed at, since the majority of games are crossplatform now, anyway. If it's for a game that is, why would I spend $59 for the Xbox version when I could get it for $49 or less, as generally most PC games are cheaper initially, and get rapidly cheaper still. If I already own both an Xbox and a PC, I guess the one upside is not having to buy it twice if you wanted to play it on both platforms, but I wonder how often that happens?

This may indicate Microsoft trying to get more exclusives, so that if you buy the new Xbox game you'll also have it to play on your PC, effectively having a two platform exclusive, both of which they control. Otherwise, it seems like a strange feature to try and shoehorn in, doubly so if you've got to pay extra for it, and stranger still if I'd have to pay for both GFWL and XBL Gold.

That still doesn't explain why I'd want to be able to play MW or Arkham Asylum on my PC, when those are games I specifically bought to play on my 360. The really annoying prospect is that they could just stop releasing Xbox games for the PC independently at all, and leave us having to pay inflated prices for a dubious benefit.

This would be a great move for them. There are some 360 exclusives I always wanted to play without the actual need to buy a 360. I doubt this is true though. Though, it makes their giveaway of a 360 for buying certain laptops mean a little more.

If they dare to charge subscription fees merely to play the games offline in singleplayer, then the whole idea can just pack in in right now as far as I'm concerned.
Don't worry. If they they anywhere near doing something like that, they're gonna get cracked outta their fucking minds...

IMO, Windows 8 does not look good at all. It's making me kind of angry that everyone, and I mean EVERYONE (http://www.ubuntu.com/ubuntu/features), is discarding features, functionality, and true customisability in favor of these overly simple touch-based interfaces that are meant for PHONES and NETBOOKS. KDE Linux is the final refuge for advanced users who are picky about how their desktop works, and if that goes, too, that's at least half my life turned upside down.

But that XBox feature looks kind of nice. I've always wanted to own a not-ancient Halo and Red Dead Redemption. Although, we all know M$ will kill it with their evil money-grubbing ways.

Well that's entirely subjective... though, there are some genres that favor a console controller over mouse/keyboard (and vice versa), however usually games of said genres don't get many cross-platform releases anyway (i.e. RTS=PC and Fighting=Consoles).

You left out FPS games which are probably what most people play online. On PC the mouse is superior to the right analog stick, is that subjective?

RTS's do work better with the mouse and keyboard, again, not subjective and fighting games favor a controller, not subjective.

I admitted that the Fighting and RTS genres don't fit the "subjective" category, but there are plenty of people here that would argue controller over mouse/keyboard for FPS's. I personally think the mouse to be more accurate but enjoy using a controller more.
