Band of Brothers. Extremely bittersweet ending...
They won the war! xD. But seriously, a lot of the soldiers died due to others in the after-war victory celebrations.

A BOOK: Breaking Glass. Horribly depressing ending.

A MOVIE: Mary and Max.

A GAME: Shit, I don't know. Super Mario Brothers. He gets nothing for saving her.
Excellent idea, sir! These are good 'n sad media of recent memory.

Books: 'Push,' 'The Grapes of Wrath,' and 'The Road.' (Favorites)

Movies: Black Swan (It was biblical, to say the least)

Games: I cannot comment on this one because sad endings-which normally entail character deaths-aren't good for most franchises that are well-paid-for and generally 'good.' (You need continuity, right?)

Shattered Memories; for being the least Silent Hillish of the Silent Hill franchise, had the only ending that actually made me feel emotion (I've played through Silent Hill 2, and Silent Hill 3 as well).

Movie wise; I aways tear up at the end of District 9, only two people out the entire cast got a happy ending. ONLY TWO! and they (Christopher Johnston and little CJ) had to spend 20 years searching through trash to earn it.

Four Lions gets an honorable mention, most characters end up dead.

Lets just say Nick meeting Michaels eyes and smiling just before saying "One Shot". Man if you haven't seen that film, you really are missing out.

Grave of the Fireflies. After the first time you watch it, you cry 5 minutes after the movie stars when you hear the little girl laugh.

Oh god, many manly tears were shed when I watched that movie...

As far as books go, every single book in the A Song of Ice and Fire has parts that make not just the ending sad, but also the entire book seem sad.

Movies, I'd have to say The Wind that Shakes the Barley has one of the saddest endings ever.

Red Dead Redemption had a very sad ending, not only does the main character die in a heroic fasion but then you have to play as his annoying emo son...

Red Dead Redemption is the saddest video game ending I can think of. As for other things, the episodes of Futurama with Fry's dog and the one where time was jumping forwards were both really sad.

Serial Experiments Lain
wait... Serial Experiments Lain didn't have a sad ending... it ended on a fairly high note...<.<

OT: Gungrave...
Brandon kills himself with Harry because he couldn't bring himself to kill his best friend, even after Harry shot him in the face and hunted down everyone he loved...

Not particularly sad, per se, but definitely bittersweet: Final Fantasy X.

"Good job! You saved the world from a 1,000 year cycle of mindless destruction, tore down a deeply dogmatic religion that was literally controlled by soul-consuming dead guys, and managed to find true love in the process! Now you get to sit back, relax, and enjoy the Eternal Cal-

...er, wait. Sorry. You're a dream made manifest, and the things that are sleeping and keeping you in existence by dreaming you are about to wake up. Shit. Sucks to be you. Hey, at least that crazy alcoholic old dude turned out to be a dead guy, too, and he's gonna cease to exist as well, so you won't be alone in your oblivion. Misery loves company, right?"

Movies:

Fearless: Holy fuckmothering shit was this one sad. Very underrated movie!
Spirited away: It ended. Also the niggling doubt that it (spoilers) probably just took place in the little girls head.
Toy story 3: I don't think I have to say anything about this one.
Glory: Really sad movie, nothing more to be said.
Forrest Gump: Duh, everyone wept at the end of this one(at least I hope so)
Blade Runner: The "Tears in the rain" scene is very close to the ending, so yeah, it counts.
Schindler's list: Don't want to spoil, but pretty fucking sad to say the least.
The green mile: *Sniff*
American beauty: Yup, this one too, manly tears.
Moon: Just so fucking beautiful, couldn't help it.

Yeah, I'm a pretty emotional guy.

Lord of the rings: The end of the trilogy, cried the last 5 minutes.
Magnolia: Almost everything in this movie is fucking depressing.
Edward scissorhands: Poor Edward :(
One flew over the cuckoo's nest: Beautiful movie, adored the ending. It's sad, but also triumphant. So it was a mixture of sad and happy tears.

Yup, cried at the end of all of these. Now if the list was "which movies made you cry?" and it wouldn't constrained itself to just endings, then this list would be much longer. But for now, these are my picks.

Terry Pratchett's "Nighwatch", although to get the maximum effectiveness you need to be very aware of the Discworld, Ankh-Morpork's reputation and the City Watch. Especially Samuel Vimes and Vetinari. ;~;

I also can't watch Dragonheart without bawling my face off.

I cried at the death of some of the characters, if I remember correctly ;~;
Corbec, Bragg, Soric ;~;
Then there were the two Resistance men on Gereon who were caught by the wire wolves, the second one staying with the injured first one, despite certain death ;~;

The two saddest endings in recent memory for me are:

Red Dead Redemption. Brilliant, tear jerking ending.

Blood Brothers (musical). Sublime, Start to finish.

A Game of Thrones -

All of Eddard's men are slaughtered, Khal Drago dies, Sansa is held hostage, and then to top it off Eddard is murdered by Prince Joffrey.

Just waiting for the retribution to come in Clash of Kings...

Metal Gear Solid 3 -

The Boss sacrificed herself, her team, her life, and her soldierly reputation for the sake of her country just to elevate Snake to Big Boss himself and to carry on her legacy...

Dark Tower: Wizard and Glass

Susan is burned alive, Roland's mother is killed by his own accidental bullet, Cort is murdered, his father dies...and Gilead falls.

The only scene which can rival the sadness in that book and series is when...in the seventh novel...

Roland guns down Mordred after Oy is killed. He then looks into the campfire and utters "I can only kill my family...". It was a double reference to the fact that he could only kill people related to him and get others killed. Most powerful line in the series.

Not really a sad ending but I'm a really big fan of folk music and especially Nick Drake, who always had a very strong melancholic sound, I guess because he was always depressed, but I find this music so much more amazing than a lot of other musicians.

The movie 'MoonChild' is incredibly sad, as is Elfen Lied and Evangelion (series and movies).
