Acclaimed anime director Satoshi Kon has died at the age of 46.

Kon passed away passed yesterday after losing a battle with pancreatic cancer, according to reports.

The filmmaker's work includes Perfect Blue, Millennium Actress and Paprika.

Kon's movies influenced several US filmmakers, including Darren Aronofsky who purchased the remake rights to Perfect Blue just to replicate the film's bathtub sequence in his 2000 drama Requiem For A Dream.

Critics and fans have also noted similarities between Kon's sci-fi thriller Paprika and Christopher Nolan's blockbuster Inception.

Kon was working on fantasy-adventure animation The Dream Machine, due for release in 2011, at the time of his death.

It's a sad day today.

I loved Paprika. Such a shame that Kon died so early. May he rest in peace.

Is it weird that whenever a famous individual dies prematurely from something like cancer it makes me incredibly aware of my own mortality and that i might suffer the same fate?

I didn't know the man nor was i familiar with any of his works, but my sympathies go to his family, friends and fans. It's always tragic when someone dies fairly young.

I loved Paprika and Millenium Actress. I think i'll give Perfect Blue and Tokyo Godfathers a watch, still haven't seen them yet.

Rest in peace Satoshi Kon.

This is so sad to hear... a wonderful, talented director with plenty of imagination.

It is very sad. I found out yesterday and was apprehensive to post, but it truly is sad. I have seen Paprika and Tokyo Godfathers, but his other works are ones I do need to watch.

I heard of his other work's but I only saw Paprika, and I loved it.

It is truly unfortunate, he was rather talented. May he rest in peace and my condolences to his family

Oh shit... that's tragic. Millenium Actress is absolutely my all-time favourite film, bar none and his other 3 notable films are among my favourites as well. You could say he's possibly my favourite filmmaker of all time, only Hayao Miyazaki even comes close. This is a sad day for the arts, especially as he died so (comparatively) young. I hope they manage to finish his final film somehow.

Perfect Blue is one of my top 10 favourite movies, Paprika is also golden, and both Millennium Actress and Tokyo Godfathers sit high on my Must Watch list. Needless to say I'm a fan and I will miss his work.

It is sad indeed. I've seen many of Satoshi's films and have loved them all, especially Paprika as it's sheer creativity and imagination restored my faith in film making. It's a shame many people are still so unfamiliar with his work as he truly was one of the greatest animated film makers of our time.

RIP, Kon Satashi, you will be missed greatly. I mourn for all the great things you didn't get to share with us, and I thank you for all the things you have given us.

Good night, sweet prince. You may die happily knowing that you have brought satisfaction to many.

Let's just hope Akitaroh Daichi doesn't keel over, then the animation world would be drowned in a river of tears.

This is a huge loss for all of us. Paranoia Agent and Tokyo Godfathers where amazing and it makes me sad to know that we won't get any more awesomness from him.

WHAT? What... I was going to watch some of his work because it seemed so psychological and unique, but before I do... he dies?

RIP SATOSHI KON! A shame he died so young.

Aw man. It looked like he was going to break the genre's limitations eventually, if he just kept making stuff.

Sad that his body of work now never going to be anything more than 100% pure "anime."

I could never claim to be a massive fan of the man's work, I've seen Paprika and liked it but that's about it. I will probably look up more of his films in time, but for now I do not count myself a fan.

But on a human level this is very sad.

He wrote this as he was dying and his family posted it on his blog after he died, this is the english translation

http://www.makikoitoh.com/journal/satoshi-kons-last-words

People can go on about his work til the cows come home, but the real loss here is of a human being and I defy you not to be touched if you read the article. I was, I was more or less in tears by the end.

RIP
