i use the quick save button every couple seconds/minutes ... after fallout 3 and other glitchy and buggy titles i started quick saving after every minutes just so i wont lose too many minutes WHEN the game crashed the next time....
unfortunately this still exists in mass effect 2 pc version~.. the game crashes on me at 4 points in the game because for some reason the game cant render the "blue laser" effect when the character is too close to it and it crashes.
1)at the space station where the AI went Crazy the mirrors puzzle.
2)the collector drone thing that shoots that blue laser at you.
3)the 2nd drone at the trap on the collectors ship.
4)reaper derelict ship when you get to the room with the Core every time it activates it would crash the game but i found a little work around at that thing.
Weird, I got CTDs several times in that game, the space station's science lab being one of them. However, I didn't crash in the other places you mentioned.
OT: In RPGs, I do a manual save before and after every dungeon/mission and do a quick save after finishing off every batch of enemies, before unlocking a door, or trying anything I have a possibility of failing at (unlocking minigames, etc).
The most extreme case was with KOTOR, where during the final boss battle, even using the trick to shorten the length of it, I stood absolutely no chance of beating him. Thankfully, back then Bioware let you save DURING combat (which I'm still pissed they took away as an option), so I would quicksave after every round of combat as long as I hit the dude and he missed me, and then do a normal save after every 5 or so rounds. That's the only way I beat him.
Depends on how difficult the game is, or how often it crashes, which can really hurt in sandbox games, especially RPGs.
Also after playing games with checkpoints or longer phases of only multiplayer it takes forever to get used to saving again, it always feels like disturbing the flow.

Save Often: The realm of Oblivion is a dangerous place.
If the game has set save points, I save at every other save point.
If not, and the game has an auto-save feature, I turn that one on.
I save manually at three times: when I'm going to stop playing, when I've played for a LONG time without saving or when I'm about to speak to an important-looking NPC (given that it's an RPG or the like).
I can't be arsed to save manually every ten minutes, even without auto-save. I get too immersed to remember.
I have a habit of saving ALOT in RPG's. I can't help but think, yay i got through the fight, i don't wanna have to die and do it again. The ONE time i didn't save while playing Dragon Age for a while, i died and had to go all the way back so it proves my point.
It really depends on what I'm playing, but I've gotten into the habit of saving often in most games in case the console I happen to be using decides to die, which has been happening a lot of late (especially in my beloved PC's case. Time for an upgrade, methinks)
I save before a mission and after big fights, because sod's law states that I will end up getting killed off because I get careless or that there's a big enemy up ahead that will kick my butt.
Not as often as I should, I was playing Kingdom Hearts 2 for an hour, didn't save once ( I was in the zone) when my brother knocked out the power. I began to save like ever other mintue, but then fell back into old habbits.
It really depends. When I don't feel I am in trouble, I don't save. When I am doing a very hard part or a part I repeated, trying not to make a mistake, I often constantly mash any Quick Save key that the game may have.
