It really depends on the difficulty of the games. If it is a hard PC game I automaticly hit quick save in case i get hit with an insta-kill bullet. But if the game is easy and is on a plateform i dont save as often because you have to go to the start menu or to a location on the map

I quicksave after every fight, upon entering a new area, upon finding a good item, etc.

In games without quicksaves,

JRPGs, save at the world map or every save point.
Action RPGs (e.g. Fable) save when I want to quit or before an important fight.
Shooters, when it saves for me.
Fighters, ...lol.

If you can save whenever, I usually save before something big, as you usually can tell what's coming up or when there's a lull in the action. Problem with this is if I get carried away in the game I can either save many many times, or go hours without saving.

Or, if they have save points like most RPG's, then I'll save whenever I see one, unless you're speed running I think it'd be weird to see one and not save.

Most of the time I rely on autosave while I'm playing and than every hour or so I'll save it. If I accomplish something and it doesn't autosave than I'll save it too. Nothing worse than spending an hour fighting your way to some legendary weapon, dying to a random enemy and finding out that it last autosaved just after you started searching for it.
