Most of Silent Hill 3 scared me, not so much the monsters... more the atmosphere of the whole thing, Alternate Hospital anyone?

As for certain monsters id have to agree with regenerators from RE4 or the doctors from silent hill one

I agree with you completely on SH3. The alternate hospital and the last few areas of the church had me terrified.

I have to say the most terrifying enemy I've come across is the prisoner in SH2. Sure, Pyramid Head was enough to make my hair stand on end, and still does. the prisoner though, was never seen, and the only proof that he's here is the footsteps and his occaisional growling speach. It just freaked me out.

HOW could this thread have gone to five pages with no mention of Giygas?
He has no sprite. He has no character model. He is in the background. He IS the background. He is a shifting void. Red, black, green. A distorted, screaming face, that shifts back and forth, swirling like water. He surrounds you. The music doesn't help either. He is the embodiment of evil. He's a friggin' Lovecraftian horror. He gave me nightmares when Resident Evil bored me.

Giygas is terrifying. Truly terrifying. Virtually indestructible. Where the game would say "Zombie bites Paula!" or "Starman tried PK Starstorm!", it says "You cannot grasp the true nature of Giygas' attack" and suddenly half your party's dying, the other half in tears (literally). While there's no conversation with him, every attack is punctuated with dialogue inspired by the trauma of accidentally seeing a rape scene in a movie as a child (I am not making this up)

Oh, and all this in 16-bit.

Duriel's got nothing on this guy.
I can't believe I forgot him. I thought the final boss of Earthbound would be crazy and evil in an almost light-hearted sort of way.

I was wrong. SO. VERY. WRONG.

Pyramid head is my homeboy,
the bloodsuckers looked too much like mindflayers to be scary
and I eat regeneraters for breakfast
but I cannot, CANNOT stand those creepy little baby things with the wings in doom 3!

As much as I hated FEAR Extraction Point, the way they made a hospital of all places scary was brilliant. I guess we all have a natural, in-born, primal...mistrust, I guess, of hospitals, because I know I wasn't the first one to say that. I remember that part with the 3 bloody clawprints on the door that mean you're about to fight some invisible ghosts, I froze and still have yet to play that part.

For background, these ghosts kill your two squad mates: the first one is ripped to shreds in front of you, after walking through a warehouse filled with corpses, with your squadmate saying that all of them (some were the enemy soldiers, some civilians)had tried to lock themselves in TOGETHER, which is remarkable knowing what you know at that point about the Replica soldiers: how hard they are to scare, how brutal they tend to be toward civilians, etc. I can't remember if the ghosts got through or if it was suicide out of sheer terror. Anyway, your squadmate and you go into the main room, with blood on the floor. When you get to the middle the lights flicker off. When it flickers on, there are 3 no-longer-invisible ghosts floating in front of you. The lights flicker again, then there's 5, then 7, etc till there's about 13. Your squadmate gets lifted off the ground, gets the shit kicked out of him by being thrown against walls, he gets pulled into a door, is holding on to the frame for dear life (literally), says "Find Jin" (Other squad member who got seperated), you see several ghosts waiting in room, he;s pulled in and door closes, he screams, he is thrown back into main room through the wall, thrown around again, thrown outside, and is hanging from a window, clearly dead. When you approach it, it gets pulled into the building in a spray of blood.

The second one is guiding you up the building that connects to the hospital over a radio, when she starts to get weird. When you're a floor below her, you here her scream, you run up the stairs, and find the ghosts standing over her corpse with her camera (she was in charge of forensics) lying on the ground, constantly taking pictures of her body.

You only actually fight them twice, one of them being the time I mentioned where I couldn't continue, the other time being earlier. You find the door with the mark I mentioned, open it, the floor is covered in blood, and invisible enemies are ready for you. The only reason I beat them with a minimal of fear was because this is, if I remember right, before either of your squad mates dies, so you don't really know what they can do.

I turned around and instantly shot out of sheer panic. Scared the $%&@ outta me.

the slow zombies from half life 2. I dont know why they do but they really just freak me out the most. oh and barnacles.
Yep- I just freaked when I heard that the headcrab zombies' voices... It's like the headcrabs just left enough of the victim's mind intact for that victim to feel all of the pain and horror that they are being controlled and warped by something else- talk about adding insult to injury...

Watchers from FEAR. The guys that cloaked and could stick to walls. There weren't a lot of them, but they came out of nowhere and were fast as hell.
+1 here
though the headcrabs from half life made their point :(

Alma, Mr. Bubbles, Pyramid head all deserve a mention.

But I still get freaked out in AvP2 when playing marines and my motion tracker goes off. I have emptied entire clips at nothing because something fell.

And for me (a horror buff), Dead Space is my most anticipated game for this year.

PIGSY (final boss in manhunt) why? i hear you ask.... He has a chainsaw and you have litte sticks of wood :(
Or quite easily and what first came to my mind diablo, how many people can honestly say they didn't die while fighting him.
I remember Pigsy the first time I played that lovely game, games rarely get me to shout, but this one did. I exit the elevator, take my bearings. take cover in some shadows and wait for him. Nothing, (since he spawns in one of two hallways round the corner when you're next to them). I advance, slooowly... I think I'm finally safe when suddenly you hear that revving sound as he charges into my torso, illiciting me to shout "OHMYGODITSAMASSIVEFUCKINGPIG" much to the dismay of my mother, father, sister, and grandparents, one of whom fell off their seat.

But god that massive pig was scary. Once I knew how to kill him I was fine, but at that point when he's cowering in the attic until you kick him I was just unwilling to touch him for about fifteen minutes, 'cause I knew he'd realise I was there.

Eeep.

Nothing scared me more than those robots from Descent that would claw you to death. You'd hear them, but they could be coming at you from literally any direction in questionable lighting (on the x,y, or z-axis) as you swivel around wildly trying to find the freaks as you hear them shredding your hull with the worst sound ever. The ones in Descent II were even worse, they'd counterattack with your own energy weapons so you had to switch to your ammo cannons while frantically looking for them.
