Seriously. Search button is your friend. This has been done so many times before.

OT: The last time was playing Left 4 Dead for the first time and hearing the witch crying along with the music that comes with it.

Okay. Has a game ever properly scared you and what was it?

Mine is Doom 3 on the PC... It made me jump....off of my seat.....only once though...:\
Jaw drops......

Seriously? I jumped all the time. If 30 seconds went by without me jumping then I obviously wasn't playing the game properly. Especially that damn bathroom bit.

Maybe I'm just a jaded old curmudgeon but Fatal Frame? Are you serious? It was about as scary as blindfolding yourself and walking around your apartment without shoes on. And any game that just *startles* doesn't actually deliver the fear.

If I had to look at mainstream gaming, I'd say Silent Hill 2 or the first half of Silent Hill: The Room were pretty intense, but overall you should check out "Anchorhead".

Yes, it's interactive fiction (aka a text adventure), but it's damn atmospheric and scary. If you can pull yourself away from your precious 3D gaming devices it will mess you up.

I got really, really scared of the spider vampires in "Soul Reaver" when I was younger. To the extent that I had to return the game.

It's been years since that happened, and I have since re-bought and completed it.

Doom 3 and Condemned aren't scary, but they do make me jump.
Oh man! Soul Reaver was epic!

Well after the time I got jumped I stopped playing the game for a while. I came back to find that it had been completed by my brother. He then ruined my experience by sitting next to me and telling me where all of the enemies were. Bastard!

Anyway. Play it in a dark room with headphones turned up and welcome to hell!

The game as a whole wasn't scary, but the scariest sequence in a game I've played would have to be the dream you have in Baldur's Gate II after you've got to Spellhold. It's psychologically scary - the best kind of scary - purely because you have absolutely no idea what's going on.

Condemned 2 scared me...once and shocked me...once.
In the level where everyone dissapeared from the building. The atmosphere scared me a little bit. Then they ruined it with shock jump-out scares. If you look at the body on the autopsy table a monster will appear out of nowhere along with a loud noise.
And you didn't mention the bear part?
It was scary, plus it got my blood pressure to OVER 9000!!11!1
Seriously, that part was heart-pumping.

This statement is undeniably true.

This actually made me freak out. [http://www.newgrounds.com/portal/view/452252]

CONDEMNED. BEAR. /THREAD.
Agreed. That game is the only one that had me yelling "Oh fuck! It's a bear! It's a fucking bear! Oh shit, oh shit, oh shit!" repeatedly.

The very first Resident Evil. Pretty laughable if you think about it now, but at the time I crapped my pants at every sound and/or movement.
Most definitely. Played it for the first time when I was 9 - had zombie nightmares for weeks.

Same goes for Snatcher on the Sega CD - played it once when I was seven, only managed to get to sleep after reading in the manual that Snatchers didn't attack children.

I was seriously wimpy as a kid.
