funnily enough, i think that film shared the same writer as jacobs ladder
*looks it up* They absolutely do. Now that's fucking weird. There's certainly a somewhat creepy afterlife vibe that both movies have. Jacob's Ladder way more so, but there's definitely some moments in Ghost, too

Xenomorph when it's actually inside you.

Samara from "Ring", though tbf i watched that as a kid when "creepy girl with long, black hair" wasn't such a tired trope yet.

These dudes, from "Thief":

Lots of enemies from "Thief" in general, tbh. The low poly count only adds to the creepyness.

Forced immortality; as your flesh and mind decays and rots, your conciousness refuses to die.
Ah then you'd like "SOMA".

Now that i think of it, AM from "I Have No Mouth..." decidively qualifies, although i haven't read(or play) it yet.

I don't know, I find it difficult to be scared by fictional creatures. Used to do a lot of horror drawing myself trying to find the limit of what can be the most disturbing images to the human mind, so maybe that has something to do with it. But really, it's people that scare me. People and the systems they support and happily contribute to. It's all far more insidious, the facade of a smile, the illusion of a feeling human as they rip away everything you hold dear, gaslighting you and your loved ones so you become the enemy while they run off with all the riches as you suffer the violent backlash of the brainwashed evangelical, laying further groundwork for the for demise of humanity, where the universe will become unobserved, unrecorded and unappreciated as if there was nothing at all.
So you're a George "Man is the real monster" Romero kind of guy? :D

Its not so much any particular monster, but the idea of a grudge ghost. And again none of them in particular, I think they all either have a goofy backstory, a pathetic/nonsensical grudge or just look stupid, but the idea of an unstoppable force. Something that cannot be reasoned with, cannot be calmed or stopped. It has unlimited power, unlimited range, unlimited malice and will get you.
Even like the Xenomorphs can be shot, Freddie can be out-magicked, Jason can be set on fire, the Cenobites just want to make a deal and torture bad guys, giant spiders are just spiders and they ain't immune to shotguns, Pyramid Head is so depressed he kills himself, and that Ring ***** just wants her mix tape to go viral. But like the Woman in Black wants to kill your kids and if you ever look into a window, mirror or glass of water she'll find you and instantly teleport to you, and she has complete control over all kids in her area, and there's no time limit involved. You fuck up for even a second, once, 100 years from now she'll still get you.

Again I think the WiB looks ridiculous and is pretty petty for an eternal ghost, but the idea of something with her powers is scary. Not creepy, like a centipede on your foot, but scary like being chased by the Klan.

I think the writer wanted jacobs ladder to be a more traditional horror film, in terms of how it depicted its demons and hell. it was the director that took it into the weird body horror, head shaking territory. A decision that was for the best, I think.

I get where he's coming from though. Hannibal Lecter is "just a guy" but to me he's far more frightening than most movie or tv monsters. Also, more subtle "possession" style bad guys are scary. Not full blown open sores and pea soup like the Exorcist (although that's scary enough) but something that doesn't really show externally. Like "Fallen" with Dinzel Washington or the episode of the X-Files called "Grotesque" where you don't even really know if there is a possessing "entity" or not.

But (and I'm out because what's coming next is pictures posted) any monster design that utilizes trypophobia to trigger a response can fuck right off. Man is indeed the real monster, because a man somewhere designed that creature to unnerve me.

Hey to be fair to zombies, they don't discriminate, rape anyone, organise pedo rings, push race theory, fund conservative think tanks to veil data on anthropomorphic climate change while demonising unionisation and pretty much any form of societal empathy or progress...all they want is a little innocent nibble of your tasty bowels. Like a starving dog you probably shouldn't hug or let out, they can be dealt with. Unlike the ever-closing void of existential dread that humans create, or even the very virus responsible for the zombies in the first place! ☺

(Though not fond of flesh eating bacteria, or the steroided sci-fi version: "all-consuming 'grey goo' of malfunctioning nanomachines")

I echo Dead Hand from Ocarina of Time & the Poison Headcrab from Half Life 2.

Also: the Shambler from Quake 1. Just something about the bloody extremities & mouth, along with the weird beige fleshy skin-tone... yeaurgh.

The Monkees. Anytime or anywhere, look over your shoulder and guess who'll be standing there. Terrifying.

You don't hear about it as much, but I wouldn't be surprised if their body count wasn't higher than Shia LaBeouf.

Weren't they too busy singing to put anybody down?

OTOH, apparently there's a lot of dead people in Davy Jones' locker.

The baby from Lynch's Eraserhead is the first one that comes to mind. Part of it is obviously that it's a really fucking good puppet. It just looks so organic, it's amazing. But I think it taps into some pretty primal fears, the idea that this creature that you're told is your child is this slimy, deformed, vaguely reptilian looking monster that is kind of framed as having been sent from a higher power to torture you. I'm sure it hits even harder if you actually have or are expecting children.

Didn't they use an actual cow fetus, like a mold of it or something, to give it its realistic look? I think I heard something like that.
