Hello Escapist
For years I have always thought the Deathclaws from Fallout NV where the most scariest but difficult creature to kill and hated how they out run me and kill me with 2 hits. Then I recently played Mass Effect 3 and OH MY FUCKING GOD!! the Banshees are scary, different and down right insane to kill.

So what are the scariest and most difficult monsters/creatures you have faced in a video game and maybe even give you the chills?

The Grunts and Brutes from Amnesia are definitely a contender.

How...how do you get someone's jaw to look like that?

Pyramid Head in Silent Hill 2 the first time you play through it. Especially in the labyrinth. Fucking nightmare fuel that is.

Nemesis from Resident Evil 3. God damn it that dude is freaking terrifying. He's very scary looking, scary sounding, keeps chasing for whole game and you know that with every encounter he gets only stronger.

What about the first boss fight with him?

I don't how many times I failed that because just as I thought the fight was over he turns around and slices me open.

I say Pyramid Head, too.

True the first fight was pretty damn scary. But the labyrinth had such an oppressive atmosphere to it that made it far scarier.

I think I was too focused on Maria being so slow to realise "holy shit, Pyramid Head!", until the last two corners when he started catching up to me o_o

Still, at least nobody got raped/murdered in the Labyrinth.

For me one of the more scary creatures is Eve's child from the original Parasite Eve, more specificly the sequence right after you beat him. Add to that that Square re-used it's design for a summon in final fantasy 8 and yeah, I almost crapped myself.

That Jaws-esque tune that plays during the sequence doesn't help much either.

I've never been more terrified of a 2D sprite.

Oh you just had to remind me of that bastard. I don't know what about it is scarier, the fact it's hunting your ass down and will horribly murder you, or it's damn footsteps.

One would have to be a cut mutant from S.T.A.L.K.E.R. Shadow of Chernobyl, the Tark:

Almost glad they kept that thing out of the game.

Next would be another S.T.A.L.K.E.R. mutant the Blood Sucker, so many times these things scared the Hell out of me.

The Rodent was none too pleasant either, once saw a swarm of them take out an entire S.T.A.L.K.E.R. camp.

The howlers in Clive Barkers: Undying were also very insomnia inducing.
Their call was very unsettling.

It's an eldritch abomination in a mech suit. That can walk through walls.
What's not to be terrified of?
But yeah the footsteps helped a lot. Major kudos to the sound guy on that game.

Kudos or curses. The sequences in the game where you had to actually run from it were intense, especially considering that thing was surprisingly accurate with its weapon, even at long range. I know it could shoot through walls, I must have gotten lucky as I never saw it walk through one. Well, not without blasting a hole in it first.

I've got another.

The Jailor in Digital Devil Saga 2. Having that bastard chasing you is fucking terrifying.

The Midwife from System Shock 2 I'll admit freaks me out a little, especially once you've found out the story behind them.

Easy.

The skinless gorillas with elongated claws from Resident Evil 1. Also known as "Hunters"... Hearing that "pit pat pit pat pit pat" of their trampling feet as they run towards in the dark was always terrifying.

My vote goes for the Motion Tracker in the Marine campaign in AvP2 for the PC.

It might not be a monster, but nothing will inflict more terror upon you than that damn *bing-bing....bing-bing...bing-bing" sound.

I guess you could call the dots on it "monsters"...they certainly represent monsters....and there's nothing scarier than seeing a dot on the tracker coming straight at you yet you can't see anything in front of you, and then it just disappears.

Yeah, I'm going to need a fresh clip for my pulse rifle........and a fresh pair of boxers for myself, please.

One of the few jump scares in that game, but the roof scene about gave me a heart attack..

I never really understood what that thing was in the game, all I knew was to run my ass off when that thing came around and started to hunt me down, bloody annoying creature.

Now this guy I bloody dreaded everything single time I heard his theme start up. You also forgot to mention he's sometimes strapped with a bloody rocket launcher as well and as pretty good aim with the thing. My first nightmare boss on the PS1 and damn he's left a lasting impression on me.
