So after playing some of the new AVP, I was quickly reminded of how frightening that little pinging of the motion tracker could be. So I started thinking about other in game sounds that make me jump and/or scream like a little girl. So far I've got:

AVP motion tracker ping
half-life 2 black headcrab screech
the utmost dreaded creeper hissssss from minecraft

Nothing else is coming to mind but I know there are more out there.

What other sounds should go into this list and why?

In Warlords Battlecry II, hearing the announcer say "Beware! A Titan walks the Earth!" was not a very pleasant feeling.

Hey, come on now! The witch's cry in Left 4 Dead. That sound always got to me.
Yes, this is definitely going on the list. Don't know why I didn't think of it, especially after playing expert a few times.

The Witch never scares me since I found her spawned in a doorway, and I hit her by closing the door. She ran for it. From a WOOD DOOR. I can't find them scary anymore.

This sound, on the other hand, scares the pants off me.

"SSSSSSSSSSSSSSSSSSSSSSSSSSSSSSS!"

If I'm not mistaken System Shock 2.

I always found the midwives much more frightening however.

That deep bass sound in Amnesia that happens when a monster is nearby. It's scarier than the monsters themselves.

Always wanted to play system shock 2. Is the first one worth messing around in or playing through before 2?

Amnesia... every fucking creak, growl, wind movement, footstep, and even the fucking ambient music made me fear that game with all my soul.

And then you have the sound of the actual monsters. as soon as i hear the "Bleargh!" I run the fuck away and shit my pants =(

Generally, sounds that mean something. If it's just there to be creepy, but doesn't mean anything, it's not so bad (with the exception of the monster breathing in the plague sewer bit in VTM:B, that doesn't go away once you've killed the monster).

Footsteps, for example, means something is moving nearby, and it could actually hurt you.

The witch in L4D quickly went from cool to annoying, like someone's screaming kid in public. Never really scary.

hard to say..if you into the kind of game, one can be fun. if you don't mind the eyecancerous graphics of course. but it isn't as brilliant as 2, nor do you need to play it storywise.

Easily dozens of the sounds you hear in Amnesia: The Dark Decent. not much scarier than the things you see and hear there..
