In a game in which most of the significant enemies are virtually or totally immune to one, some or nearly all of your weapons, ammunition is precious, gunfire attracts more enemies and you haven't yet figured out how to get the ramp down ...

... the sound you've never heard before indicating that something has noticed you and it's something about which you have no information at all.

In one of the Silent Hill games you're stuck on a school with ghost children who giggle in the dark, always creeped the daylights out of me.

On a somewhat similar note, why dont we have a Willhelm Screm [http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=cdbYsoEasio] for video games?

X-Com the original.

Just.. X-Com

The very soundtrack is elegance in its simplicity.

Imagine coming off the interceptor.. not knowing what you're up against.. in the darkness.. to an empty isolated farmstead. You know there should be life here..

And all you hear is this.

Well let's see.

The initial "Fwaaaawlgh" squelchy growl from any Amnesia monster when they show up and are roaming the area.

Midwife androids from System Shock.

When you hear a vent burst open in DS/DS2.

The eerie noise from F.E.A.R. whenever Alma appears.

The Fast Zombie from HL2, especially when they leap at you.

Oh, and other than the obvious ReDeads, I always found the Stalchild's noises in OoT quite scary, mostly because I was often running across Hyrule at night.

Also, and not sure if I'll be laughed at for this, but the music/sounds that would come up when those Trumpet headed bird things in Twilight Princess would show up were rather unsettling. Also, Bokoblins in the darkness. "SCREE-SCREE SCRAAAAAWGHK!"

Oh god....

I remember when I was playing Dead Space for the first time. I've been playing Survival Horror since Silent Hill 1 and RE:1 for PS1 so I was no stranger to survival horror.

But at the beginning when you are walking through the space ship and you keep hearing a rhythmic pounding, I had no clue what it was. The more I heard it, the more scared I got.

Then I turn a corner and it's some dude banging his head against a pipe. Ok I thought, no problem.

I walk closer and BAM! Breaks his skull open.

I usually don't find games scary or creepy and if there is something creepy its usually faded after the first time I hear it.

Dead Space however has a few gems to it. While most the scares like necros popping in and out, safe rooms that aren't really safe and so on you can get use to. Their are just certain undoubtedly creepy moments though.

This only happens once if I remember correctly in the beginning your in a silent corridor with two fans going about in circles making a droning noise, for all but a few seconds you'll hear a skittering across the ceiling and a shadow will race across the lights shining through the rafters. The fact this only happens once and its not constant means if you catch it your expecting something to come out the walls or come up behind you, it never does but it adds a beautiful moment of tension.

Also the whole cult level is probably one of my most favorite moments in horror games since the entire thing puts you on a slight edge.

Since someone mentioned WoW bosses, personally I find the whispers of C'thun to be the creepiest ones every designed in WoW too bad noone and I mean noone ever does those levels anymore.

Ahhhh, Yogg Saron brings back good memories of when I still played and enjoyed WoW.
Anub'Arak was well done, but Yogg Saron doesn't get enough credit for being fucking terrifying.

I see your Silent Hill radio sound and raise you a Silent Hill 2 air raid siren sound:

Not sure if it's the in-game sound or the crappy movie version...

Also:

Resident Evil 4 Regenerator breathing... holy shit!
The rattling hiss of the poison headcrabs in Half Life 2

I can't believe this wassn't mentioned before...

Fatal Frame / Project zero 1. The blind woman.

Imagine a woman with a blood-soaked blindfold stumbling through the room, moaning and whimpering, aimlessly stumbling past you. until you take a single, audible step, causing her to turn around and charge at you with full speed screaming "MY EEEYES!!" ... Yeah, that ***** made me freeze every time.
Ohhh yeah... it's been a while since I played that game, but I want to say the long-armed ghost makes some horrible noises too... I've blanked it from my memory. Something about crying for its children? "Give baaack! GIVE BAACK!!" Oh yeah, and the child ghosts, crawling on the floor and giggling and [a heref="http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=fDZ9e1__zEo"]asking you to play with them.[/a] (skip to 2:45) D:

And speaking of children, how about [a href="http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=McMyasj_0gg"]the horrible little ones from Dead Space 2[/a]??

The sound of the regenerators in RE4 scares me to death. Even just thinking about the noises they make freaks me out... Also every noise Nemesis made in RE3 terrified me. Whether it was his cry of "S.T.A.R.S!" or that roaring noise he made the guy always had me scared out of my mind.

I have a deep, instinctual fear of the sound that Husks make in ME2. It terrifies me so much that I get scared before it even happens, and refuse to move forward without having both of my squadmates and a combat drone ahead of me when I know there are going to be husks.

They are terrifying, relentless, and the fact that they feel nothing and have no concept of fear or pain... it's horrifying. They don't stop until you destroy them. They don't act like anything you have ever come across, and although they look vaguely human, they are devoid of humanity. Husks are a violent, vicious emptiness that you're forced to look into as you race to destroy before it surrounds you and beats you to death as you struggle against it. The noise they make is a hollow, empty moan that almost sounds familiar, like it could be grasping at life. But it's not, they're not grasping at life, they're grasping at you. No purpose, no feeling, no concepts, no thoughts, no emotion, no drive, not even instincts. They are nothing. Their groans are gaping, empty, meaningless sounds. No thing is as terrifying as nothingness, how can you bear to look into something that does not look back, cannot look back, has nothing to look back with? It will not react, it does not stop, it cannot yield. Their howls consume silence, swallow it, rip it from you.

They are my worst fears made manifest. And their noise is enough to get me all poetical, so that's pretty damn scary.

Any sound in Penumbra... the anticipation of playing that game, then playing it at 4am... and the wind... :O
Also, the cries of headcrab victims in HL2 when you actually decipher what they're saying, and how they say it... it, err... it messed me up for a while... a good way of stopping sleep
