The average superhero movie takes a dude who has a well of courage and the desire to act, but has no means to do so. Or--if he's like Tony Stark--he's at least brave and unflinching even when throw out of his element. When he's told to build a Jericho, he refuses. He builds himself a suit that will empower him to fight his way out.
Throw depowered Peter Parker, or Tony Stark, or Bruce Banner, or Steve Rogers, or even fucking Hancock into a situation where they're being used and pushed around by drug dealers and they'll demonstrate an underlying strength that their powers ultimately act as a lens for. Their powers will seem like the natural extension of the boldness in their hearts.
I like Luc Besson's movies. But when I saw that he was making a superhero movie with a woman in it, I somehow knew the first thirty seconds of the trailer were gonna look like this: a scared, panicky, crying woman being pushed around by coolly confident men in suits. And when she pushes back, she's brutalized by physical violence into crying and cowering some
Not that this is in any way unrealistic, or a bad way for a character to react. Fuck--it's how I'd react. I'm not any stronger or taller than SJ and I don't have any heroic reserves of situationally-inappropriate confidence. And I'm certainly not saying this is gonna be a bad movie just because it portrays this kind of character
But it's kinda sucky that we can't have just one goddamn movie about a woman with super powers where she fits the same wish-fulfillment fantasy: someone who acts in a way that's admirable--but dangerous without super powers or some other kind of implausible action skills--getting super powers.
Can we have that Black Widow movie? Please?
