Black Widow deserves her own Movie, the kinetic action would lend itself well to a matrix-stylized movie.

It actually looks pretty cool, and I like a lot of what Besson does so it should be worth checking out. Not sure why so many in this thread seem to be so hung up on the scientific aspect of the premise given that almost every sci-fi movie has some part of it's premise similarly fall apart on inspection.

Hmm...a condom of cocaine activates a well-established pseudo-scientific myth to turn you into a god. All I heard was: "Drugs are awesome! Go do some LSD America!" ^_^

i'd rather watch a good movie based on a dumb premise than a dumb movie based on a good premise.

I hear Morgan Freeman talking all science-like, and the first thing that springs to mind is this.

I agree.

Is the premise dumb? Certainly. However, let us pretend that this is an alternate reality, where humans actually only use 10% of their brain meats. Disbelief has been suspended, I can now enjoy the movie and all its action and all those interesting implications of becoming more than human.

To me, the movie looks like a lot of fun with the possibility of even being thought provoking.

So basically, we get to see Scarlett Johansson turn into Dr. Manhattan?
That is what it looks like. It gets me excited. Is Lucy going to be as deep as Watchmen? Probably not, but Dr. Manhattan was my favourite character Watchmen, will be interesting to see where Lucy takes the idea.

Eh, looks interesting. I'd like to watch it if for nothing else than to see the ending that the trailer leads up to.

The average superhero movie takes a dude who has a well of courage and the desire to act, but has no means to do so. Or--if he's like Tony Stark--he's at least brave and unflinching even when throw out of his element. When he's told to build a Jericho, he refuses. He builds himself a suit that will empower him to fight his way out.

Throw depowered Peter Parker, or Tony Stark, or Bruce Banner, or Steve Rogers, or even fucking Hancock into a situation where they're being used and pushed around by drug dealers and they'll demonstrate an underlying strength that their powers ultimately act as a lens for. Their powers will seem like the natural extension of the boldness in their hearts.

I like Luc Besson's movies. But when I saw that he was making a superhero movie with a woman in it, I somehow knew the first thirty seconds of the trailer were gonna look like this: a scared, panicky, crying woman being pushed around by coolly confident men in suits. And when she pushes back, she's brutalized by physical violence into crying and cowering some

Not that this is in any way unrealistic, or a bad way for a character to react. Fuck--it's how I'd react. I'm not any stronger or taller than SJ and I don't have any heroic reserves of situationally-inappropriate confidence. And I'm certainly not saying this is gonna be a bad movie just because it portrays this kind of character

But it's kinda sucky that we can't have just one goddamn movie about a woman with super powers where she fits the same wish-fulfillment fantasy: someone who acts in a way that's admirable--but dangerous without super powers or some other kind of implausible action skills--getting super powers.

Can we have that Black Widow movie? Please?

Ah, the "ten percent of our brain" myth persists. Sigh...

I'm a little torn. On one hand, it looks pretty, I like the principal performers, and if it just cuts loose and has some fun with the premise, it might well be entertaining in a "don't take a whit of this seriously" sort of way.

I mean, c'mon. You've made an unwitting and unwilling woman a drug mule for a substance that could turn her superhuman if something goes wrong with the packaging? Someone is sure only using 10% of their brain...

On the other hand, there's a horrible possibility that the creators actually want this nonsense taken semi-seriously, that they want to say something about human potential or the god-essence inside us or the philosophical ramifications of what power does to one's humanity. And while Hollywood movies love to perpetuate the cliche of fools/madmen who are fonts of secret wisdom, I prefer my wisdom to come from people who seem to have some credible claim to being neither... In other words, if you want to show me how deep and thoughtful you are, this is not looking like the vehicle to pull that off, guys.

Seriously writers? All anyone has to do is Google "10% of Brain" and the first link will be "Ten Percent of Brain Myth" - Wikipedia the free encyclopedia". It's THAT easy! I know that sci-fi/action movies are often based on pseudosciencey mumbo jumbo that isn't meant to be taken seriously, but this is an urban legend WELL KNOWN to be entirely made up. It's almost like making a sci-fi movie based on the premise that the Earth is flat.

I'm sure lots of people are going to see this anyway because it has Black Widow and splosions in it, but to me the stupidity just sucks out any interest I could have feigned.

People seem to really like that Christopher Nolan film, Inception. Possibly the dumbest concept for a film I've ever heard since The Prestige. And yet, really neat pulp sci-fi. I don't think "drugs make woman be smarter" is any dumber than "man does heists inside a brain". Christopher Nolan makes it all at least sound smart, which to me would prove that, indeed, the execution makes a film, not its mere premise.

Oooof, the bullshit 10% again? Lazy hack screenwriting BS makes me sigh deeply...
On another note, this does seem to be a kick-ass movie otherwise!

Would be funny (in an immensely dissapointing way) if the thing inside her is actually making her hallucinate and we get an ending similar to Repo Men.

Yeah... I think I'll wait for the Black Widow that's just been announced. I hear they got David Hayter to write and direct it. Should be interesting.

I don't know if you watched the trailer, but to me it looks more like: When she pushes back, she becomes a cold, calculated efficient and brutal superhuman machine that will slowly evolve into a god.

That is probably the dumbest premise for a movie I've seen all day.
Okay but change Lucy for a guy called Neo, and the drug induced more than 10% use of the human brain super powers for 'the one' and, well isn't this kinda The Matrix but with a much much much better looking Neo?

Oh and any money that the ending will be nothing more than her having some high end delusion as a result of the drugs!

Yeah... I stopped watching at the point where it says you only use ten-percent of your brain. So stupid. No. Who doesn't know that you use all of your brain? Seriously? In this day and age.

Like someone has said a few posts back, this trailer sure gives me some sick Lucy from Elfen Lied vibes..only without the gratuitous gore so I don't know what to say about that.

With that said, I found it quite enjoyable the premise and might check it out in theaters when it comes out.

I find it rather amusing that so many crawl out of the wood work to bemoan the 10 percent myth with such apparent vigor, decrying the premise of a film based on a select few snippets of dialogue from a trailer.... There are plenty of mildly clever ways to harden up the science here, hell, could be the filmmakers conjured up a few, do embrace a touch of optimism, it flavors life so nicely. If you really must stroke the old ego, why not look into the old myth and conjure a few amendments or alternatives you hope the film might implement, a constructive effort. Seeing a tired, haggard argument trotted out in response to the perceived appearance of a tired trope smacks of hypocrisy. It tastes of the bitter stagnation of the old boy intellgentsia, and really Escapist community, you're far too young and full of potential for such small minded cynicism.

I can't decide whether I want to facepalm or think this looks cool.

I'd like to shake every possible screenwriter by the proverbial shoulders and go "No, we do use a hundred percent of our brain's capacity. Just not consecutively. We have a name for what happens when the brain goes full tilt. IT'S CALLED A GODDAMNED EPILEPTIC SEIZURE."
