Schadenfreude [http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Schadenfreude], if you don't know, is a term for the way some people gain pleasure from the misfortunes of others. Has there ever been a situation where you may have engaged in some schadenfreude? Or maybe you've been the source of it for someone else?

I'll admit - I like watching those documentaries on TV about incredibly obese people, that are like 1000 pounds and can't leave their homes. I'm a fat-ass myself, but it makes me glad to know that I'll never be like them (or at least I hope to Odin I won't be). I do feel bad for these poor people, but they also make me feel better about myself (I know, I'm awful :/)

To say you've never experienced schadenfreude is to lie straight through your teeth.

In other words, yes I've gone through some schadenfreude.

I agree that if you say you haven't then you're a liar, I try not to though, at least not outwardly..

Have you been listening to Avenue Q by chance? I ask because they have an entire song called schadenfreude.

And yeah, Angry Caterpillar is right, if you haven't had some schadenfreude in your life, you are lying.

Yes. Just recently too. My friend was bitching online on Facebook about having to clean his room and I laughed at him. Then I bitched about something online and he laughed at me back. Everyone loves schadenfreude! I love it almost as much as I love schmetterling!

I've experienced Schadenfreude more than a few times. I usually try not to, but suppressing yourself when something awful happens to someone who generally deserves it is pretty hard to do. Schadenfreude is much more widely accepted as a good thing in other cultures. Namely, the ones that involve karma.

I love killing nuke boosters in MW2, sometimes I'll find them and wait till they get 24 kills then end there streak.

Also, I'll laugh if someone falls down or hurts themselves.

Edit: I love the way Schadenfreude [http://www.merriam-webster.com/cgi-bin/audio-medlineplus.pl?schade01.wav=schadenfreude] sounds.

I like my justice like I like my revenge: served cold. So yeah, I've taken enjoyment of people getting (in my mind) what they deserve.

My friends always come to me, asking for help editing and doing basic read-overs of term papers and the like. Many of my friends are poor writers. I laugh at their poor writing. Schadenfreude.

I love it when my scientific nemeses have to apply for crappy positions at crappy institutions because they weren't good enough to get awesome positions at awesome universities.

I just hope I can pull it out and get one of those awesome positions when I get to that point.

Haha, this. I just read this guy's masters thesis. Truly terrible. Of course, he'll graduate, and of course I rewrote half of it, so he can probably just Schadenfreude me right back.

Zounds.

There are more bands then just Avenue Q that do a song called schadenfreude, Vanna for example, and I'm sure there will be many others.

Anyway as many others have said you would have to be lying to yourself to believe you have never experienced it. Most recent one was simply my brother smacking his funny bone or singing his nose hairs.

Obligatory humorous song reference:

But yes, I have a slight psychological case of Schadenfreude. I only really relish in it when it's brought on by their own actions.

Especially if they say so on the internet.

People just make it so easy.

Not... really. Not unless they really deserve it. I have very serious problems with causing harm to people, animals, or even fake representations of them in the real world (yes, i'm one of those people who gets sad about seeing stuffed animals torn up) that are undeserving of being treated bad. I do not enjoy seeing people get hurt.

But... what I emphasize is the part "that are undeserving of being treated bad". When somebody crosses that threshold however, the person in question not only loses my normal repulsion for seeing them suffer I would possess, they also lose their status as a living being in my eyes. Translation? It means I can do anything to them and feel little remorse, which tends to lead towards me doing things to those people that would appaull all but the most indifferent or sadistic of observers.

To most living things, I am friendly or caring (at least internally) to the point of seeming overly passive or weak. When towards "bad people" however, I acquire a level of schadenfreude that could only be exceeded by the likes of the dark hordes of Genghis Khan and others like them.

Um... I enjoy it when a celebrity has something "horrible" happen to them, because most of the time it's really not that bad. Celebrity: He cheated on me!, is equal to a normal person: He got drunk and abused me. It's either a joke made by the media or they're really that stupid. Either way, I got to laugh.
