I laughed my head off when I found out that one of my friends punched another student. Granted the punchee was someone I hated anyway.

Of course I've felt some schadenfreude now and then. But at the same time, I've also usually felt sorry about the person that something happened to and bad about myself for enjoying it. Of course, it all depends on the circumstances. If it's just something really minor then it's OK to laugh I guess.
Feeling good about something truely bad happening to someone else is probably one of the lowest and despicable things I can imagine.

Yeah, but only when the person the misfortune is happening to really deserves it for being a bad person to begin with.

Great, now I have the song stuck in my head.
OT: I love me some schadenfreude, its the only reason I watch figure skating during the olympics.

Have you been listening to Avenue Q by chance? I ask because they have an entire song called schadenfreude.

And yeah, Angry Caterpillar is right, if you haven't had some schadenfreude in your life, you are lying.
There are more bands then just Avenue Q that do a song called schadenfreude, Vanna for example, and I'm sure there will be many others.

Anyway as many others have said you would have to be lying to yourself to believe you have never experienced it. Most recent one was simply my brother smacking his funny bone or singing his nose hairs.
Avenue Q isn't a band. It's a musical.

I, as well as the rest of my class, laughed when this one kid fell asleep in class. he was from two periods before... he fell asleep then, the teacher had one free period and let the kid sleep, then didn't wake him up. he woke up like 1/4 into the period, in which case he looked around, had a weird expression on his face, then just left the room. It was hilarious, but it must've sucked for him cus he was marked unexcused absent 1 period and late another, which is really bad in our school, and also cus it must've been really embarrassing for him.

To say you've never experienced schadenfreude is to lie straight through your teeth.

In other words, yes I've gone through some schadenfreude.

Oh yes. My absolute favorite story from high school involves my friend getting caught screwing this chick from his church in his dad's car behind his dad's print shop. And then the police showed up. Yeah, he lost every privelege he had and the chick's dad only stopped short at putting a restraining order on him. My favorite part is that when the cop came up to the car he didn't have time to take the condom off, so the whole night he's talking to the cop and his parents with a rubber on his shrunken penis. And the disheartening sound of shhhhhhh-lorp! when he pulled it off and the end.

I lol'd. A lot.

People who complain about spelling on the internet being horrendous, and then they misspell words in their rant. Schadenfreude. :)

That's sadism, not schadenfreude. Ain't nothin' wrong with that though

Obligatory humorous song reference:

But yes, I have a slight psychological case of Schadenfreude. I only really relish in it when it's brought on by their own actions.
Ninja'd. Dammit.

But yes, I have engaged in Schadenfreude, and it makes me feel bad even as it makes me feel good.

I think technically my relationship is a bit of Schadenfreude. Not my fault she was dumb enough to let him go and let me snag him, and she wants him back.

No, no. Sadism is when you're the one inflicting the pain, i'm talking about watching happily from the side.

ahh, yes. Only the German could make a word that means pleasure from other's misfortune. And as one of German descent, I am one of the few who can make that joke.

Not... really. Not unless they really deserve it. I have very serious problems with causing harm to people, animals, or even fake representations of them in the real world (yes, i'm one of those people who gets sad about seeing stuffed animals torn up) that are undeserving of being treated bad. I do not enjoy seeing people get hurt.

But... what I emphasize is the part "that are undeserving of being treated bad". When somebody crosses that threshold however, the person in question not only loses my normal repulsion for seeing them suffer I would possess, they also lose their status as a living being in my eyes. Translation? It means I can do anything to them and feel little remorse, which tends to lead towards me doing things to those people that would appaull all but the most indifferent or sadistic of observers.

To most living things, I am friendly or caring (at least internally) to the point of seeming overly passive or weak. When towards "bad people" however, I acquire a level of schadenfreude that could only be exceeded by the likes of the dark hordes of Genghis Khan and others like them.
Ummm... so basically all humans are shit in your eyes? Because if you find me a man who says he is undeserving of being treated badly, then I'll show you a liar.

I often say I have no empathy for anyone, but I usually find myself being the first in line to lend a hand to someone whose fallen or dropped something. I suppose it's just one of those cases where I pretend to be something I'm not.

You didn't read what I wrote did you? It is a personal perspective that is wholly independent of the thoughts and opinions of others. I decide who falls into what area in my mind. By that definition, most people are actually quite alright in my world either because they are actually decent people or I haven't discovered their bad natures yet.

I'm an optimist at heart. :)

My so-called best friend has completely neglected me for six months now. There's a long history behind it, a lot of bullshit, and I definitely deserve some answers or something at this point. Anyway, after all this time... I recently heard that he's gotten fat, for the first time in his life.
