Greetings fellow peoples of the Internet, I have come to ask your opinion on how I handled this recent matter, read on!

Last year our school decided to completely digitalize all assignments, uploading them, marking them, feedback on them, the whole works. Now I would normally have no problem with the school moving in a progressive path, but the way they handled it last year was very poor, causing great confusion. But after a couple months I and the majority of the student body had worked out the system which we all were content with.

Beginning the new year, it was assumed that unless the technicians told us there was a change in the system (like they did last year) that it would stay the same. Now starting a week ago, when I decided that I would be a good student and hand in my draft for my first assignment, two days earlier than required. Being the aware pupil I am I followed the old procedure of uploading a draft, which was just that, ignoring the 'send for marking' button which as described in the previous year wasn't necessary as it would send that draft in replace of your final copy.

Now as you might of guessed, they changed the system, so now that 'send for marking' button was now required. Not telling any students!

The first thing I did when the teacher confronted me that I hadn't 'submitted' my draft was proceed to tell her my side of the story. She the told me that its not her fault and that if I wanted to argue my case I would have to take it to her superior, the principal.

I went and told him the story, only to receive a reply saying that I was in the wrong, for not understanding the system which they didn't teach me to use. Now I and other students have had our assignments failed because we didn't know how to use the system.

Am I and the other students in the wrong?

"Yes", quote marks important.

It's sort of assumed you have to know how to use it, and that it's your own fault if you don't, no matter how much the school is fucking you over unfairly by sticking to that.

No. It was a failing of the school board and/or a breakdown of communications. I would suggest getting together with the rest of the students who were burned by this and protesting calmly and civilly.

As long as you and the other students handle this appropiately you are in the right, I think.

I don't believe you and the other students are in the wrong. The school should have sent a notice to all students about the changes they had made to the system. In my opinion I think you and the other students who had their projects failed should talk to the school board about what happened.

So your saying, even though they told us how to use it one way? then changed it to the other, with out informing us, we are wrong? I didn't think we needed to inquire about something they told us how to use last year?

Oh god,
I go to the same school as InnocentEX and let me tell you the website goes something along the lines of this:
- Have a SEPERATE CODE for EACH SUBJECT that doesn't have ANY PATTERN and that the TEACHERS CONSTANTLY CHANGE WITHOUT TELLING US
- This 'one time' code REPEATEDLY ASKS TO BE INPUT
- Constant Crashes
- Broken Links
- Having To Sign In Twice From Home
- Confusing Layout
- Aforementioned Draft Problem
- NO EXPLANATION TO ANY OF IT

This website is HELL! (Well as hellish as upper middle class suburbia can be, but shut up im trying to make a point)

First thing I thought when I saw the title was that the school's probably pretty disappointed in you too, because you don't know how to spell disappoint. Sorry, but that's what I thought.

On topic, you're probably right. They really should have taught you how to use the system, or at least given you a frigging instructional pamphlet or something.

I am saying that you are going to be declared to be "wrong", no matter how badly the school fucked up in this matter.

Oh it seems I may have misunderstood your post as badly as the school misunderstood me. My earnest apologies, your point makes more sense to me now.

The school will never EVER admit error, unless a rather significant percentage of the parents complain. Even if they know it's their fault, even if they know that they didn't teach you how to use the system, they will never admit it, because frankly, they don't care and they don't want to appear foolish.

Hmmm, if I were to put my anarchist hat on I'd say you should team up with some of the more tech-minded students and find a way to crash the convoluted system entirely. No-one can submit, no-one can get marked, everything comes to a halt as the over-blown system collapses under its own weight.

In my normal day-to-day though, I can only recommend maybe getting your parents on-side? Schools tend to react differently to parental pressure.

did any student manage to hand their assignment in?

I would say its both of your issues. yours for not understanding the system but more the teachers/it guys problem for not explaining the changes to the system

Officially it is your fault. Schools fuck this shit up all the time and then simply pin the blame on you, it's kind of their thing.

Really, if the entire student body has failed because of it then there should be some form of do over because it wasn't their fault. The teacher should allow you to hand in your work late rather than fail everyone.

That seems really unfair. If they change something like that they are supposed to tell you. Do you have really strict teachers or something because when a similar thing happened to me and my friends at school the teacher just asked for a draft asap, no punishment.

They did that last year and my brother was suspended for not telling the school who did it...

The students who were new did, so that is like 10 people...

The teachers show little sympathy for students who don't hand in their drafts on perfect time.

I am thinking that we might be able to force a resubmission of all assignments, as this only happened recently and if we get a lot of support we could possibly pull something off causing them to reconsider it.

The school is unlikely to admit error unless it becomes more embarrassing not to.

You could try writing a polite letter of protest, signed by as many students as possible, then sending it to the teachers, principal, school board, whatever government agency is responsible, local politicians and the media.

That may get a reaction. Unfortunatley the reaction might not be one that helps you in the long term and it could get very unpleasant.

Your in a bit of a no win situation with this. Just think carefully about any response and try not to let justified anger make you do something stupid.

Good luck.
