Officially, you are in the wrong for not having asked what the changes were and learned about it, but in actuality, they should have told you anyway.

If over 40% of the students were unaware of this, then I think they should be forced to accept that they done goofed.

Absolutely not.

The school can get into huge legal trouble with shit like that. Especially (if what you are saying is true) the entire class failed an assignment because they were not told what to do. That actually is against the law in Secondary School (in the US)

Stuff like this happens all the time at University. My advice would be to make sure you know exactly what needs handing in and how they want it submitting. A friend of mine got marks taken away because his final piece of work was presented in Windows Media Player and not Quicktime.

I know it sucks massively and I have nothing but sympathy for you, the whole system is a joke but this kind of thing will only get worse as you carry on. Read your briefs carefully.
