I also like that some guns are classified as assault weapons by name, not by characteristics, but then other similar guns weren't known to the lawmakers at the time and so weren't. The Streetsweeper was banned (porbably because of the name), other semi-auto shotguns weren't (technically the Streetsweper isn't semi auto, but you know what I mean). Also that gun makers have made a slightly different version of the same gun with a new name and it's not banned. For example, The Intratec TEC-DC9 is the same as a TEC9, but this one was Designed for California after the normal TEC9 was banned by name.
He's always been a flip-flopping biatch. His response does not surprise me in the slightest. This is the same fucker that acted like a total douche, when Stan Lee died and started attacking him and all adult comic-book/comic-book movie fans. The man is an attention whoring coward. I never had any respect for Maher, and this already proves my point.

Yup, the SKS would basically be considered a "featureless" rifle. It has a fixed magazine that only holds 10 rounds. It doesn't have a pistol grip, or a collapsible stock, and the bayonet can be permanently removed. And yet it was banned by name because...reasons.
Lets not forget Bill Maher is in Iron Man 3. He was happy to take Marvel's check.

I saw my friend who's a retired state trooper and detective yesterday at the bar for the first time after the shooting and he said the training for a school shooter situation is to go in and go in for the kill. It's basically the one time the police are told not to preserve life (of the shooter) since it's an active shooter killing people, there's no negotiations or anything, you go in and end the situation as fast as possible. He said the cops royally fucked up.

Huh? What the fuck did Bill Maher say that was wrong in the clip? Did you just read a quote or transcript because he obviously quipped back right away with full on sarcasm in the clip when the guest mentioned the cops aren't sleeping well and basically ended his take to that with "what the fuck!"
Well for one having Douglas Murray on. I googled him, and yeah he's a far-right conspiracy theorist. And I didn't feel like Bill was being harsh enough. It was a very useless conversation.
Your post made it seem like Maher was pro-cop (for the school shooting) when he totally wasn't. I watched the clip mainly because I was pretty surprised that Maher would take that kinda position, and he obviously didn't. 90+% of news/political conversations are rather useless, I don't get why pointing out this one is worth pointing out especially when the take away one would get from watching it isn't some false narrative built on misinformation, which is a set up from the norm.
I don't think the rules can be that simple.
Many shooters just kill until they are stopped. That's straightforward: take them down ASAP. But if you have a shooter who may have killed a load of people but is currently holed up with apparent hostages, that surely falls under normal hostage tactics. After all, if you have a shooter in a room with people they aren't killing, then you're not under an urgent requirement to act and going in guns blazing has substantial risk of loss of life to the hostages.
That's true...if it's a hostage situation. But everything about this was screaming "not a hostage situation", including the gunshots that apparently were only audible by non-cops.
I believe the intent from this detective is for the shooter to be aiming/shooting at the cops which means they are less likely to shoot hostages in your situation. That doesn't mean the cop is actually shooting in your example though. They are just meant to apply pressure so they can't focus on killing innocents
I believe Phoenixings example would be better suited cover the initial engagement. It's way harder to gather hostages if you have to keep your eyes on cops.
Is not a situation like this the very reason that police tactical units exist? Okay so PC Plod can’t handle a crazed gunman on his own, or even with a few mates because they’re not equipped for it materially or by trade. Fair enough, so that’s when you call in the special units with (supposedly) the special training and equipment so they can go in and get him. That is one of the duties they exist to do.
