This just came up in an other thread (by me) so I thought I'd post it as a general question.

What made school for you?

As a 21 year old I miss school with every fibre of my being. Here are some reasons it was the best thing ever.

1. Pretty much get away with murder.
2. Lots of friends about.
3. If you had friends that is...
4. Girls, girls, girls.
5. Sports, or more specifically team sports... (how many of you can get a proper football match on without being in a team?
6. I guess I should say guy's, guy's, guy's if you are such way inclined.
7. Smoking in the toilets/behind bike shed.

Please add to this list...

Don't just make this a list thread though, I wanna hear some reasons... Please.

EDIT: It doesn't matter if it was your first school, high school, college or university...

All had their reasons for being great...

And all had there reasons for being bad, lets talk about those too.
Think about this,
I GO TO A BOYS SCHOOL *facepalm*

Same problem here.

mind you it's still enjoyable being with friends all the time. but all boys school is crippling me socially. That and back in primary school i wasn't that interested in girls and as such makes it extremely hard for me to socialise now.

Ew, school. I'd rather cherise my days of independence as self-reliance as an adult. Shit may come my way, but shit will come your way whether you're in primary/secondary education or not.

I love school...
The only things I hate about it are the assessments...
Other than that, it's great. There's no effort needed to keep in touch with your friends, because they're already there! Fooling around in class is so much fun.... ^^

Don't get me wrong. I'm not here to cast disdain on those who enjoyed their high school experience, but it wasn't some nickelodeon faux-teen-drama show realized.
Ah come on, it wasn't all that bad...

Besides, on paper, school to me appears to be awesome. Sure some lesson's sucked, but if you liked learning then that's a good thing.

If you liked escaping from detention (my favourite) then this teaches you all you need to get away from the cops if need be...

There's something for everyone at school.
Lessons were fine.

I actually liked my classes, and my teachers.

The significance of high school is not what it is in a institutional sense, but rather the time period it encapsulates for the participants.

The time period of many of our lives were of violent change or struggle.

Glad you had a good time.

I was home schooled so the only contact I ever had with the school system proper is the SAT, which I just took today. SAT designers, from hells heart I stab at thee, with my last breath I spit at thee.

It kinda sucked back then, but you now realise how much better it was then compared to how it is now, hanging out with your friends for most of the day, or getting griefed at your dayjob?
I´d gladly do some shitty history assignments again...

Actually having a common interest with people and being able to hang out with them once you get your work done. That is what made college for me.

Now compared to the working world which is like this. Physically stuck in a single location working for 9-12 hours a day stuck with the same people day in day out hearing all their bullshit about how they get drunk every night and having to physically pick up their mess when they screw up like it was not their fault.

EDIT: To all those who say they won't miss college(not high school) trust me you will miss college.
Mine is actually this but reversed, I get along alot better with people I have worked with as opposed to school. The mess part was pretty much college.. Of course there were good things, and there are bad about work, but I much prefer work, especially now that I work for myself. As for the girls girls girls part, I was still in the closet then so that didn't help :p.
I guess it depends on who you are if school is the best time of your life, I am much happier now. Also I certainly don't miss university! I do miss the friends I made there, but I can still visit them occasionally :)

Wait, there are things people actually liked about school?
-Constantly being grouped with morons
-smart people constantly put down and alienated
-team sports unplayable because some dickhead always had to take it too far
-not allowed to leave school grounds to get lunch
-having to listen to unfit, unintelligent teachers, having to accept that even your smart,
compassionate teachers were countered by an abysmal education system.
-Hell even the girls get boring, as soon as you have been with one they all have an opinion
on you, I'm really not a fan of highschool girls...

Really, every good point about school still exists at uni/work. I've met some really nice marketing girls at my temp job, nice waitresses at my part time resturant job and I can't even begin talking about the girls at uni. It is also a lot easier to makes friends outside of school because you are not restricted as to what you can discuss, and you can move to quite places to chat (coffee shop etc).

I mean I guess I should reluctantly admit that I met my closest friends at school, but a lot of them fucked off to other schools towards halfway through anyway, so it's not like I was around them for my whole school career, I saw (see) them a lot more outside of school than I ever did in.

.....god I hated school.

I liked school, it was fun. I got to see my friends every day, the lessons were mostly interesting (in grade 12 I dropped math to do music.. Best choice ever!) and most, if not all, the other kids were nice to me, I wouldn't say I was friends with all of them but I could make small talk if need be.

Having said all that.

I do not miss school.

I'm studying music at Uni and it is better in every single way. My friends are like minded (being musos and all), its interesting and there is a lot more freedom. What I like best about not going to school is I don't have to see anyone who I don't want to. I did not do well at school so its good to do well at something.
We are so oposite yet so the same. I would probably drop music for math and i did pretty well at school but yet i'm still that guy. The guy no one doesn't like. I have friends in all crowds unfortunetly it leads to some lonely birthdays because i know if i invite my geeky friends and my goth friends and my jock pals and my gamer buddies and my smart friends that it will be a blood bath....i don't think any one at that school knows when my birthday is

School.

Positive: No, not really.
Let me correct this to fill my needs, as well.
I would disagree lol. I found a few really amazing people. As well as some great teachers! School sports don't ALWAYS suck, we got a competitive good quality football league here. Unfortunately, my school is overcrowded by about 500 people.

My school had 3.5k people in it, I think.
I'm just biased against sports. If they're not bloodsports, I have no interest in them, frankly.
Haha, well my school was only built for 1000, being that it was from the older days. The school board bragged awhile ago that it was "the cheapest school they ever built" and just looking at it you can tell.

With lack of funding and no new schools being built, the school is so small you are late for your class because there is only one way traffic, but traffic is coming from both ends.

I miss uni.. majorly, you would think after a decade of it I would have gotten sick but I didn't...

with school in general, even though at the time I tended to hate it and try to excel to get the hell out, I look back at it now and realize...

it was easy as hell and easy to avoid the drama and crap if you really wanted to, There was a predictable pattern to it all, a sort of structure and security.. comparing it to the day to day living of the real world and adulthood( throw in being a parent as well) is akin to comparing a merry go round, with say " vortex" or some other high end coaster...

Sure the merry go round had it's ups and downs, and offered some thrill...but you always really knew what to expect, where as being loose in the world has a pattern thats more random, un predictable that takes more than a few turns on to start to get the flow of the track in your mind...

There are alot of other things I miss too, like the social life, but I think in the end it comes down too " life was very very very simple then"

I miss my old friends from my original Year 12. I'm on the Pathways Program so I do my HSC over a number of years, this is my last year of school but I can't honestly say I know anybody my own age in my classes on a familiar or basically friendly level, it feels like I'm in a sea of strangers who think it's weird that I'm 19 when they're all 17 and I can't date them because they're jailbait or I can't trust them because I sometimes don't know if a girl is reaching out to me or just taking me for a ride to make fun of me. I only have one subject at school left to do, and that's the only real reason I have to go to school for, all my old connections are gone to University and many of them have forgotten me already. I feel abandoned and alone by people my own age and I've only got people younger than me left to talk to in the hallways.
