And this, my friends, is why I sometimes resort to griefing. It's for the greater good. Not really. A bit. Maybe.

Aha, my friend, you are not alone. Once yo realise that everyone on earth besides yourself is wrong, things become fun again.

Well I've just read the entire artice. While it's funny at first to read this as "Haha, griefing for the sake of science? Brilliant! Skrew those angry gamers and thier overreacting, this guys is a genius", all "Twixt" ever did was play to p*ss people off, for years, in one area, in a way you can't fight. I play CoH/V in BRITAIN so I've never even heard of "Twixt" before, and while his play style is brilliant in it's siplicity, keeping it up for long enough to have legit lynch mobs may be a sign that you cut that sh*t out. When I play CoH/V it's the friendliest MMO I've ever played, (mind I've only subscribed fully to three, not at the same time, and used a month free of 3 others) I've made good friends that I know I'll never see, but as far as they're concerned "Captain Fallout" is a reletivley decent guy who can make jokes "too soon" and generally stops when he's told to.

As far as I know there isn't even a reward for winning in RV, it just resets and you go again. And I do know you personally get no reward for a drone defeating an enemy. So here we have a man skrewing people over in a way that has no defence other than not playing at all, to prove a point that eveyone knows alrady for around THREE YEARS. A study like this could have been done in one year to the same effect.

I began reading the paper like this man was a Cyber-Che, battling Farmers and winning, while obeying the rules of the game. However as I went on it started to feel like this guy loves being loathed. We can all name a story where a man decides to kill someone beacuse it gets his face in the paper. With the anomynimity of the internet on his side, this man could effectivly clear out every bank in the word in a magical suit renders him a silent, invisble, intangible menace that could make you dissapear from the next town over.
In trying to expose the jerks of MMO's he's turned into the very thing he set out against, it's tragic really, but that's overshadowed by people paying monthly to sit through his sh*t.

You know what? I don't blame Twixt for being an asshole during his course of play: I blame the game developers for LETTING HIM be an asshole.

He was exploiting a part of the game, and the game's moderators decided to let him keep doing so. That's the real issue. You see, most players that play a game WILL use every dirty trick in the book to win. They will use glitches to their advantage, exploit the world geometry, and push the boundries of the game for the sole purpose of attaining victory. The developers of this game should have stepped up and fixed the PVP zones in a way that would prevent such shenanigans when they started recieving reports of Twixt's antics, but they didn't.

For that, they're the ones at fault for all the "heroics" that Twixt perpetrated.

You do know they fixed the exploit he was taking advantage of, right?

How did they fix it exactly? I'm curious.

It sure took them long enough to fix the issue though: I mean, a player was exploiting that for HOW long? It sounded like several months. Not to mention that the petitions the other players made should have clued the devs into the idea something was out of whack.

This doesn't sound very scientific to me; case studies are not acceptable evidence of a scientific claim - they need more data before I'm convinced that it's a general trend.

Because things take time to do, PvP has been in a constant state of balance flux ever since it was added six issues in (and is still a fairly small segment of the game), and it was likely not a high priority problem based on that.

They added teleport resistance to a lot of status protection powers, and in Issue 13 they not only revamped PvP toggle suppression (active defense powers keep granting protection if you're held or stunned by another player's power), but getting hit by an enemy player's teleportation power grants intangibility for a second. The last part doesn't do anything against police or arbiter drones (they can hit intangible foes), but it does help against the thing the PvPers were really pissed off at: getting teleported into crowds of enemy NPCs (getting killed by them adds XP debt).

Oh, and it might not mean much, but from my time playing and posting on the forums, I can easily say that there are few game devs I like and respect as much as those at CoH/V. Ever since Cryptic left and a skeleton team of NC Soft was left to keep the game running (they're a bigger team now, thankfully), they've impressed me.

Well, I can confirm that just about 90% of everyone on PS Home is an asshole, so no shock there.

I think this is just sad, mostly because it took science this long to figure it out, and secondly because this sort of thing is almost all games with a multiplayer mode. Right on man and keep up the good work

Ok, now I have all the facts. Or at least enough to retract my previous statement about the devs being lazy with the PvP parts of the game.

I actually played CoH before and loved it: though I'm no longer subscribed, it's one of the few MMOs I'd consider paying money for. I might actually get into it for real when the expansion is released.

I'd never play PvP though: not my style. I'd just go Rping with some buddies or something.

Same here, really. I'll nip into the zones every once in a while for a thrill, but I far prefer the PvE game, and I'm still trying to get both a hero and a villain to 50 so I can make a Warshade and a Blood Widow.

Well..."trying" in the sense of when I'm actively subscribed to the game (I stop when school becomes a priority, or I switch off with WoW). And "trying" in the sense of "my primary goal, which doesn't stop me from running 12 or so alts, out of the 40 I've made."

Actually after reading the actual report itself this story has been manipulated a little; it was more of sociology/psychology experiment uncovering the differences between written rules (i.e. what is allowed with the contexts of the game) and the unwritten social rules of the game (disparaging certain tactics) than a study just to prove a group of people are jerks. I saw a lot of similarities to Left 4 Dead actually; whilst closet camping isn't banned in the context of the game itself, it's generally frowned upon by people. Even my steam friends call people 'corner camping n00bs' if the other team does camp. So come down off your high horse, non-MMORPG players.

EDIT: See also the hate thrown at Snipers in most FPSs

"You camping *****!"

or the people whining about Pyros

"Oh how I love W + M1"

Any sentence or theory that has both "Science" and "Jerk" in the same sentence, cannot be logical.

This reminds me of a certain south park episode actually, this guy was being a jerk. (not to say I don't agree the fact that MMOGers are dicks)

Multiplayer games are as good as the people that play them; obviously City of Heroes isn't for me.

I haven't played City of Heroes so forgive my lack of knowledge... but you are constantly irritating people that haven't done anything to you and you expect that everyone's going to be buddy-buddy with you? Either I'm missing something or this "Twixt" guy is an idiot.

Every multiplayer game has jerks that stay ahead of the curve to annoy others. This guy was apparently one of them, and community reprisal didn't strike him as the obvious result for some reason.

However, trolling the 6 players that play that game would be really, really, fun.

I wonder what portion of those giving him trouble were single men? In my personal experience (and I am not saying that this is an accurate picture of the whole world) all single male MMOG players I've ever met seem to be utter dicks. I repeat that this is just my experience and I accept that it might not be an accurate picture of all reality.
The thing that get's to me is that he was playng the game IN CHARACTER, which is what you are supposed to do in a "role-play' game. Whilst his means of doing this (a little munchkined for my tastes) could be questioned, he was playing the game properly, so all the exp hunting tools and morons trying to use it as second-life with the occasional brawl have no right to *****! If suppcriition charges and the amount of grinding required to get a powerful character didn't put me off, the behaviour of these invalids certainly would have.
I also agree with all those who point out the way anomnomity can lead to people acting like arses.
