What they really need is something to detect roadside bombs. They kill the absolute majority of the people.

Hah, you do realise they said that exact same thing about 15 years ago. They say that every 10 years but it never happens. Sure it will someday but not for quite a while.

OT: This looks awesome, but expensive...
They actually already have hovercars. They're just not economical to produce, they make a hell of a lot of noise, and they're not all that fast. It's basically just a dozen huge fans attached to a car in strategic places.

The silent Blade Runner-esque hovercars though, are a long ways away (though we're somewhat close with Mag-Lev trains).

SKREEEEEEEEEEEEEE! "head explodes*

In all seriousness, it is good to see that one of teh hallmarks of Sci-Fi is under way in real life, and that it isn't some huge super weapon.
THis is cool as hell, and if it works, could lead to teh new future in protection. IMagine, if this works, being able to construct person sized ones for police vests, excetra.

This could make the future of warfare veeery interesting in the coming decades.
But it won't - because it's looking like warfare can split in either of two directions:

- Lots of urban guerilla combat in 'peacekeeping' missions or 'liberations' a la Iraq - street fights with soldier-policemen without a tank in sight
- Nuclear standoffs between major powers, where you're going to need quite a forcefield to survive.

By the time the MoD has prototyped, tested and manufactured these magical tanks, it will have been quicker, cheaper, and likely a lot more useful just to build another handful of nuclear-equipped Trident missiles.

[sub]Dammit they stole my idea, there's no point going on Dragon's Den now[/sub]

Thats sounds cool, it wouldn't be long until the shield technolgy advanced so they could regenerate. Now I'm just imagining tanks retreating, hiding behind a building while a soldier is just willing the shield to regenerate faster.

[sub]Hey I could pitch that on Dragon's Den *goes to apply*[/sub]

Now tanks could play Pong! Imagine firing a rocket from between two tanks equipped with this, then running away. RPG bounces off of one, goes toward the other, then back. If either of them miss reflecting it someone nearby would have a very bad day.
That is brilliant. I have a feeling if this technology is ever implemented, some fool with loads of disposable income is going to try it. He would be incredibly stupid to do so...but it would be AWESOME.

Awww that's so cute.
The humans are upgrading their technology in a tragically foolish attempt to compete with my people's weaponry.
Still at least it'll make genociding the entire species a little more interesting....

.... okay seriously, this is good. Finally we may have forcefield tanks, it certainly feels futuristic now, hopefully while we are at it we can make flying cars and hoverboards and self lacing shoes. Remember folks we only have five years to have all this stuff or else Back to the Future lied to us.

Still no flying cars. WHERE ARE YOU FLYING CARS!?
People are already dumb as shit when driving and you want to put them behind a flying vehicle?
Actually, most people trying this stuff are perfecting a guidance system. You'll plot your course, and a sattelite will put you in a "corridor" of the sky. If you try to fly out of your corridor, the vehicle automatically corrects. Hell, this means you could basically be flying autopilot.
I'm guessing this will be a very long term research prject... And how many charges will it give? This will probably be an experiment kinda thing, that leads into cooler technology.

Wow! It's great to think that stuff like this and even hovercars could be seen in our lifetimes.
Scientists say that the first hovercar will be avaliable in 10 years time. :)
scientist also said we would have jetpack's 10 years ago

That sounds awesome. I just wonder what might happen to friendly weapons that are near the force field. They might be rendered ineffective if the pulse generated by the force field hits it.

Who am I kidding? Actually getting a force field is one of the coolest pieces of news I have heard in a while. That, and the story that some scientists have taught moneys the value of money, thought it really doesn?t compare. Kind of shows I have a dull life. Oh well.

I just want to know why the U.S. hasn?t come up with this yet. We are supposed to be leading this thing as far as military goes. Still, I will give the British dues for their idea. It is nice to see someone take a different approach to force fields, and replace armored platting with electronically generated ones.

Still, I do have a concern of where the power supply will come from. You can imagine generating enough power to keep a shield solid if it is truly made by energy. Now imagine that it would have to incase itself and the tanks, while holding up against ballistic missiles and bullets. I think that the only way that might work would be if the shield could gain power from a nearby source, like the base, but even then that would make it difficult because the tanks would have to remain inside a set distance away from the base, which would pretty much make an offensive move impossible.

Also, if the force field ceases stuff from going in wouldn?t it also stop things form going out? Maybe if they were able to drop to shield quickly, but then that leaves a window open for attack.

It will be cool to see what they do once they get it up and running. Does anyone have a guess of when that will be?
