I'm not a fan of metal of any kind, but there's this one fairly loud rock song I like, with a touch of screaming to it.

There's plenty of awesome screaming, I don't really know whether I prefer this sort of thing:
or this:
[youtube.=rOmEr1k6-uE]
To be honest, it just blows my mind that people can make that kinda noise.

This topic needs more people who like it outside of heavy metal music.

I guess in terms of heavy metal, ambient black metal would have to be my favourite.
It's not as obsessed with being macho as many of those death metal folks. Who think they're so brutal and manly and that being such is so wonderful. Ambient Black Metal isn't afraid to be fairly introspective instead of just abrasive.

As for the amount. I'm okay with both screaming and clean vocals in the same song. But the clean vocals have to be good and fitting for the song. A lot of the time it's not, and so I'd rather they just screamed the whole time.

One of the things I like about emocore groups is that they rarely use clean vocals unless they know what the heck they're doing. Like I Would Set Myself On Fire For You and Circle Takes the Square, who use spoken word occasionally, and really complements the screams.

Of course, sometimes it's just hilarious.

I just wet myself. Words cannot describe how much I laughed.
... I think I'm missing the joke. Muse aren't consistently good enough songwriters for me to accept that they're taking the piss here. Unless of course their first two albums were designed to be parodies as well...
I dunno - I'm pretty sure they were taking the piss, but the reason I love Muse is mostly because of their complete [http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=eXo2gnualsU] and [http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=DlAPkNpS-O8] utter [http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=L4c4myEJL8k] psychosis [http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=3dm_5qWWDV8&ob=av2e]. So that song there could just be Matt Bellamy letting out his inner madman - erm, even more than on every other track on their first 3 albums.

I think it's pretty simple. You either like it or you don't. Some people like it all the time, some people only like it in specific cases, some people just hate it hate it hate it.
So it's basically like anything else.

It was good on David Bowie's "It's no game PT 1" but otherwise bands that always scream are usually ridiculous heavy metal bands with no concept and. Lot of T shirts to sell.

I depends on the context.

If you look like one of these cunts:

Okay yes I'm a fan of BMTH, but the band members do not look like this anymore. This photo is from what maybe... 4-5yrs ago? Curtis (far left) isn't even in the band anymore. If you're going to slag off a band that you probably haven't even taken the time to listen to then you're pretty pathetic and narrow minded and at least use a current photo and not the first one that came up when you Googled the band.

It's fine in moderation, say one or two lines but when it's the whole song? Nope.avi

I mean I don't know how some people can say hip-hop isn't real music if this counts:

I think of it as an acquired taste, really.
When I first heard songs with screaming vocals, I was immediately turned off and thought they ruined the song. A couple of years later as I matured and my musical knowledge/library started to expand, I decided to give the songs a chance and listened to them a little more.

Then once I heard bands like Between the Buried and Me, Gojira, or WhiteChapel, I realized that the screaming doesn't really hurt the song, as much as it complements the very heavy riffs or intense parts, making them even better. I now think that if certain songs were to have the screaming replaced with melodic vocals, they would just sound silly over what the rest of the band is playing.

Some bands even find a great mix of both clean and screaming vocals i.e. BTBAM, All That Remains, The Human Abstract, etc.

I developed a taste a few years ago and have even became a vocalist because of just how much I love the style and passion often delivered in older harcore bands, as well as the power and sheer energy that exudes from death metal and extreme music in general.

I don't know much about screaming in music nor have I listened to much of it, but I do like this.

Screaming can be good if done right, here are a few of my favorites.

Amon Amarth - Thor Arise

Five Finger Death Punch - The Way of the Fist

I'm not a huge fan of screaming in music. Anything that has the potential to create a sound distortion, lo-fi effect just really puts me off. I'm not saying that all music should be purely melodic, just that I don't like the screaming.
The closest I'll get is Emilie Autumn and her deranged growling in some songs, and that's just barely definable as screaming in most cases.

Personally, musically, I like the "true screamo" stuff. Like this.
Omg another one!
Do you like Pianos Become The Teeth?

Their music is still shit and they still look like cunts, so it doesn't make much of a difference, does it?
Will never understand the hate for this band. They don't look like that anymore (apart tattoos they look pretty much normal but I don't know why that would be a problem unless you're actively looking for something to get pissy over) and they're far better than the majority of metalcore and scene bands around.

OT: I like screaming in music, but I love singing equally. It all depends on what you're trying to convey.

I don't mind screaming in music so long as its done right. Which is why I barely(read: never) listen to Metalcore or deathcore for that matter.
You mean due to singers sounding like they got their balls stuck in the zipper of their pants?

There's a few decent metalcore bands, though. :p Eths and Mnemic come to mind.
Those two arent bad, though not a fan of Eths vocals, the only two female metal vocalists I like are Lizzy Hale and Angela Gossow.

And while the screamy vocals are a minor gripe with Metalcore...the major gripe for me would be the fucking breakdowns, I dont mind them and they can be pretty good in a song, but not when they're all the same.
