I bought my PS3, in '08, thinking that Gran Turismo 5 would be out soon and, obviously, it took a while longer than predicted to be released. I understand that that's often the way of things so.. fine. When I was finally able to buy it, I did so thinking that my fiance` and I would be able to race. As it turned out, the second player controller refused to let me do some of the little things like steer or accelerate, though I was able to flash the headlights - at least, if my opponent turned around on the course and was about to collide with me head on, I could signal the imminent danger. The odd thing there was that both controllers worked properly on our other PS3. The biggest flip-off from Polyphony came in the form of their quiet refusal to fully support the $300 Logitech G27 wheel that I bought and built a stand for. While I can steer, accelerate, shift, and brake, there is no way to put the car into reverse, no way to remap ANY buttons, and no realistic way to use the E-brake - therefore, no drift-racing for me. The whole experience is extremely frustrating and disappointing, considering how much potential for enjoyment the game has.

I'm wondering if anyone has any similar stories, optimism, or tips.

Have you tried the options menu from the UI front end (the one where you choose GT mode, Arcade mode, etc...)? I ask because there are several "options" menus in the game and that's the only one where you can choose/edit controller preferences. I believe there's settings for up to 4 players.

If you have then sorry.

My G25 works in a limited capacity (exactly as you describe: I can't change the buttons on the wheel to anything, they don't work so no reverse, etc...). I bought it when my DF Pro broke, but now it's gimped by GT5. My XBox doesn't support Logitech product so I have to use the crappy MS wireless wheel there.

Polyphony worked with Logitech at first to make the DFGT wheel and they were going to support the Gxx wheels... Later on they decided that Thrustmaster should be the wheel for them. It's about $600. The Fanatec is a decent wheel, but it probably has the same issues as the Gxx wheels do.

But that's not the problem with GT5... Loads and loads of loading are killing this game. The horrible UI adds at least an extra button press to everything and moving from menu to menu takes nearly 5 minutes. The prize payouts for winning races are far too low and the race cars you need to complete some races cost well over 5 million credits. The prize cars are useless, who wants a fucking Dihatsu pickup for a race filled with 500hp American land yachts? Twice (once for A-spec, another for B)!

I bought a PS3 to play this game only to find out that Polyphony only knows how to make physics engines and shiny graphics engines. They do not, in any way, shape or form, know how to make a game.
