The scythe.

So epic.
We don't talk about the scythe often enough on this forum site. Scythes are just awesome. Scythes are sharp, pointy, and come in all kinds of different designs depending on who's drawing them. Scythes are intimidating, harbingers of death. And whether you're death himself [http://1.bp.blogspot.com/_2TVMxnrSCKY/TRDNyY212iI/AAAAAAAARMs/awPc2GYwBtQ/s1600/GrimReaper.jpg], or you just work for him, [http://gallery.fanserviceftw.com/_images/72ce1bfb8bb9e0e07d3863c3f3dfa0a5/741%20-%20maka_albarn%20soul_eater%20wallpaper.jpg] there's no denying the pure badassery of the scythe. They're just plain cool.

If you're into anime, there's plenty of scythes to be found. But what about video games? We had Dante [http://www.productwiki.com/upload/images/dante_s_inferno.jpg], and we had Ryu Hayabusa [http://gaygamer.net/images/ryustatue.jpg], and we had Zasalamel [http://www.fightersgeneration.com/characters4/zasa-sc3-big.jpg]. And we've had plenty of others. The scythe is to blades, what the desert eagle is to guns. It's an awesome, impractical weapon mostly chosen for aesthetic purposes. And though they sometimes seem childish, you secretly love them. I'm always disappointed when a fantasy game involving swordplay doesn't have scythes. Sure lots of games have had them, but I feel like it's not enough. I need more scythes! More more more!

Maybe I just play too many shooters, and simply don't know about enough games that have scythes. So, what are some good games that have awesome scythe usage? What are some upcoming titles you hope will have scythes?

For one, I'm really hoping Bethesda will think to include them in Skyrim.

EDIT: I didn't think I'd need to clarify this. I thought it was implied. But FOR CRYING OUT LOUD, YES! I know it's a damn farming tool! I'm AWARE. You don't need to tell me! How stupid do you think I am? Did you honestly think I believed it was originally designed to be a weapon? That's just silly! Anyway, what it was designed for should have no bearing whatsoever on what it's used for within a video game. Absolute video game realism at all times is for squares!

Scythes are a farming implement, its amazing that any are weapons in games.
I'de like to have a combine harvester in an FPS during a vehicle section, now THAT would be good use of farm equipment.

If I recall, the final boss in Neverwinter Nights 2, Mask of the Betrayer used a scythe.

It was a +10 scythe that delt negative energy damage. There was also another one in the game that, through use of the console command, you could mold a dead god's soul to form a scythe.

Haven't really seen other games to use them other than Dante's Inferno.

I like scythes, I think they work well as a focus object or staff for mages, but, in terms of actual combat with them?

Nah, just doesn't make sense to me I'm afraid.

Guild Wars: Nightfall. The scythe was a wicked melee weapon (I understand they nerfed the crap out of it a few months ago, but I had already quit the game because they started selling power for real money) in the hands of any physical class.

I like scythes a lot and I wish more games had them. With such crazy weapons as Gunblades [http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Final_Fantasy_XIII], giant magic leafs [http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/The_Legend_of_Zelda:_The_Wind_Waker], wrist-mounted dog launchers [http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Final_Fantasy_VIII], school desks [http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Persona_4], back-mounted water guns [http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Super_Mario_Sunshine], portable nuclear weapons [http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Fallout_3], vacuum cleaners [http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Luigi%27s_Mansion], horse wieners [http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Disgaea:_Hour_of_Darkness], and jars of urine [http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Team_Fortress_2], I'm surprised they're not more common.

I don't know how awesome it qualifies as but in Chrono Trigger, Magus uses a scythe. It's turn based combat in the era of the SNES, so it's not too flashy.

The main character in Darksiders II uses a scythe. Two of them. He is the horseman Death, though.

Do you want the ultimate in "ridiculously unwieldy in real life, yet awesome via pure Rule of Cool" scythe?

Ladies and gentlemen, I give you Arumat from Star Ocean: The Last Hope. Wielder of the four-bladed laser scythe.

That being said, while I know that scythes are a ridiculously impractical weapon, I tend to steer towards them and their ilk in video games. The playstyles that use scythes are usually rather fun, in my opinion.

scythes are incredibly impractical weapons because due to their length they are rather cumbersome, their weight is not well balanced and they don't even use the advantage the length could give them.
sure death uses one but he is fucking death, he is past the point of practicality.
So yeah, go for scythes as focusing items for mages and/or scifi weapons that shoot multi-colored flavors of lightning but as a practical weapon? no.

I think Darksiders had a scythe and what with the sequel following death a scythe is almost guaranteed. Not a huge fan of scythes myself, although the ninjas sickle with the ball and chain from deadliest warrior was pretty awesome.

We've been over this before; Scythes are a poor choice for a weapon, and those who think otherwise have poor opinions.

I recently fought three bosses (The Sisters Grim) in Shadows of the Damned who used a big-ass scythe as their weapon.

I also think there are some flying baddies in Painkiller who use scythes.

I killed numerous scythe-wielding foes in Knights Contract.

Actually, scythes have been cropping up pretty frequently lately in the games i've been playing. I don't think it's a coincidence that most of the foes who use them tend to resemble the grim reaper though.

Ryu's scythe was badass. If they ever make another Ninja Gaiden game, they better have that bad boy in there again.

lets ask Johnny Depp how good a scythe is as a weapon.
Yep dual wielding is apparently the way to go

Eh, I like more realistic combat, so scythes don't have much appeal to me.

I'm just glad most everyone here recognizes that a scythe is not an actual weapon. I'm one of those authenticity nerds.

But now that you mention it, I am surprised at how few games I can think of that actually do use scythes, considering how popular they are in certain communities (anime mostly. And they're always being wielded by some really thin, beautiful girl in a ridiculous outfit).
