edit: Sorry, I shouldn't be so angry, but that comment really gets under my skin. What a fucking douche.
I agree.

I never realised the video game industry had made any form of promises to parents. After all, they've been making mature games for adults for a long time now. The fucking parents should be apologising due to the fact they let their precious little children play games that, you know, are designed for fucking adults.
Beyond that - the industry effectively and clearly age rates games, engages in constant campaigns to educate and inform parents, includes age restiction tools in the consoles themselves, and more effectively self-regulates than film or music.

It's parents breaking the promises here. It's parents failing to listen, it's parents assuming all games are kids toys, and it's parents making the choice not to use the tools at hand to be parents.

And it's all fucking bullshit. I'm so sick of hearing this line of "the industry hs to pull it's weight." THE INDUSTRY IS PULLING MORE THAN YOU ARE.

it fucking drives me NUTS.

Can we send Leland Yee back to Red China where he belongs? He'd fit right in with the politburo in Beijing.

This guy sounds like the douchiest douche to ever douche down the douching district.

I can't imagine what promises he's referring to. The bill in question is about regulation of mature content and the games industry excels there. I've been buying R-rated movies and albums with Parental Advisories since I was 13 but I could never buy any M-rated games while underage. It can't be that he's pulling vaguely damning statements out of his ass that have no factual basis. That would be completely absurd, right?

Yee is an example of everything wrong with the anti-videogame movement: he ignores evidence and protest contrary to his position, and believes that everyone is on his side or is delusional. Not only that: he then tries to win support by claiming that he's not anti-free-speech, just anti-industry and pro-parenting.

Considering that suppression of an artistic medium is against the principles of free speech, and that parents are the idiots responsible for kids playing violent games in the first place, he really has no ground to stand on.

should send him some jp porn and hentai games and tell him to call us back when western games reach the level of depravity some of those games exhibit.

western games hold not a candle to what you can get away with elsewhere.

Nice to have a face to who is really responsible for this. Now I can print it out and use it as a dartboard.
To paraphrase what the real argument should be:
Andy Chalk said:
"I can only assume these broken controllers must represent the broken promises of the parents to their children*,"
*:You know, the promises made to raise their children to be responsible...

When I got the email for this from the VGVN I pretty much anticipated it would garner this kind of response. It was a very weak maneuver, and I am glad it isn't going to be the VGVN putting forth the arguments needed in the Supreme Court for this.
What really burns my button is this guy wants to make a volunteer organization a police force for the government. The ESRB was never meant to be nothing more than a simple information and advisory service in the sale of games. It should not be made into an actual legal force to enforce the ratings of games.
Edit:
No wonder my ears were ringing:

No problem man, if you hadn't said it already so I could lazily hit the quote button, I've had said the same thing myself. That comment was really low brow and pisses me off.

I mean, right. The video game industry should be totally sorry that they have age and content ratings right on the box, just like DVD and blu-ray movies have content ratings on the box and TV shows have content ratings right at the start of the show, and that just like any modern TV and DVD/blu-ray player, game consoles contain the same parental controls to block out content based on ratings to kids. Yep. Shame on you, game industry, for only doing the exact same thing that other entertainment industry is doing. I want you to go stand in the corner and think about what you've done.

You know what I'm going to say it anyway. Fuck you, Adam Keigwin.

Thanks for totally missing the point, Senator. Unsurprising from someone who claims to support free speech, but tosses aside a whole medium just because he doesn't understand its potential.

And with that, you just summed up most of our opinions on this matter.

Seriously, the industry is pulling its weight better than anything else. Its doing enough dammit. Parents have to meet us halfway here. After all, this is for the children, do they really not care about their children enough to learn a little bit about games?

Then his words achieved their desired effect I think. To quote Udina from ME: "It's just politics." Making the other guy look bad by trolling and provoking them with such blatantly and perhaps intentionally uninformed statements. Hoping that they'll reply with rage of course and turn out to 'look bad' in front of the general public as opposed to the smarmy **** that's keeping his cool.

But as for me, watching the Anderson punch calms me down on such replies I think while I await the results of the case.
