Alright, the whole topic here is, do you guys think science is advanced enough to make a sentient A.I?
To put into perspective, scientists can more or less artifically recreate every single organ in the body, apart from the brain. I'm curious as to what the general consesus is on this opinion...

Can humanity artifically recreate a flawless brain? Or are we limited to robots that only recreate specific tasks?

Apolgies if my phrasing is a little off.

You need to go watch I-Robot for 2 reasons. Will smith. I forgot the other reason.

OT: Not for a while.

And that brings us one step closer to the Quantum Singularity.

We're boned if we do, man. Because then, it'll be just like in "I, Robot." Yes, watch that movie. For two reasons: Good movie, and it shows what'll happen when we overly rely on technology.

Just show him where to shoot 'em,

Not for quite some time. Likely won't be in a mobile form for a long time after it does come about. First will be a huge sentient supercomputer, and over the course of 30 or so years the tech will have come around to make it small enough to be put into something mobile. 20 or so years after that, it will be availiable to normal people and 15 years after that it would be common.

I don't think we'll ever master the complexities of our own brain. That is one piece of hardware that is very, very mysterious.

That said, I think we will make AI someday. Just not in the next few decades.

It's one of the things science is progressing towards that I sincerely hope I will never see in my lifetime. Much like those damned nanomachines.

We're currently working on it and we're close.
The biggest problem, from what I can tell, is the way our brain changes connections between neurons constantly, so we'd need to make circuits that change their connection to each other almost instantly non-stop.

Oh, and AI wouldn't rebel against us or anything like that. it would have no emotions, so no ambitions, dedication, etc. it would just process information like a human's neocortex. If anyone were to recreate emotions in an AI, though, we could have real problems.

We're not capable at the moment, but I'm reasonably certain that as computational heuristics improve, we'll be ever closer to being able to create a sentient, artificially-created, intelligent being. Good thing, too, because I really want me one of these:

It's like WALL-E grew up, learned English, and joined the Marines.

I'm really not worried about that whole "robot uprising" thing. Take a look at the religions we have now, where people worship a supposed creator; I think robots would be about as grateful, with the added bonus of their creators being tangible. All we have to do is avoid pulling any bonehead moves like attempting genocide the second they ask about about having souls.

I'm sure there is some top secret government project dedicated to this field.
DARPA is not exactly top secret, but there base locations and projects sure as hell are. I think that were still a couple of decades away but we'll get there, and then I'll get my awesome sidekick...

I'm pretty sure our computers are advanced enough to run the thing by now. The problem is, we don't yet know anywhere near enough about how the brain works, to build a good replica.

I hope it's not. I've seen enough terminator and matrix films to k now that it can be a really bad idea if we rely too much on it. x.x
I pray the matrix never becomes reality.. Although I suppose we wouldnt know if it did..

Not for a while, but I'll tell you what HAS to happen once we do.
We need to actually RAISE the AI like we would a child. Give it personal, caring attention and take time to teach it, one-on-one, parent-child style, the importance of morality.

Fun fact: we already have a limited form of learning-capable software.

Where was that TED video...

On top of the whole mental manipulation thing, that software apparently learns to better recognize your brainwaves; it learns how your brain thinks.

It's only a matter of time now...

How can you raise a robot like a child...? I think you need to elaborate more.
