It would have to have self-preservation hardwired into its systems, since an AI would have no reason too perpetuate its own existence. And if it has anything hardwired, can it truly be called an AI?

Probably in our lifetime we'll get to see something especially capable, although I really doubt matrix or terminator caliber AI is gonna happen anytime soon. I would say it is absolutely going to happen at some point though, just in a really long time
I hope, as soon as possible. Hopefully they'll be as kind and benevolent as the machines in the matrix. That'd be pretty cool. Well, actually, the one thing that's making me think we should hold off on AI is us. Can you imagine being one of the first generations of AI born into the world? The bigotry, the assault, the constant threat of destruction? Maybe the best argument for humans not inventing AI is that we would be inhuman to it.
