January, 1642, London. The English king, Charles I flees the city, fearing for his safety after his Eleven Years' Tyranny and inability to control Parliament.
Parliament had grown tired of royal rule, and were taking over. In just a few short months, there was open brawling between Charles' Royalists and the Parliamentarians, then, soon, open warfare. England was torn asunder once again.
On each side, there was a new power rising. It was said that certain individuals, regardless of which side they supported or who they were, or even their stance on the church, were being granted incredible angelic powers for acts of goodness in this troubled time. These men and women, from all walks of life, had amazing powers, and many chose to use these new powers to influence the war, joining on one side or the other. These mysterious powers had cropped up a few times in history, whenever a major religious upheaval or war is taking place. There were stories of divine crusaders peppered all through the history tales, but many thought them just tales. They were wrong.
Now, in this new era of gunpowder and blade together, they Seraphic Warriors, those blessed with divine powers and martial ability, had returned. And it would define the future of the Old Kingdom, now and forever. Will the King reign over the land, cementing the Church of England's monopoly on the souls of the world? Or will Parliament win the day, bringing England into a new time, a time without kings or queens, where a person is free to choose their own way? The seraphic warriors will chose. God help us all.

This is an alternate history roleplay, based around the English Civil War with men and women with angelic powers mixed in. You will be playing one of these, known as seraphic warrior, who has special angelic abilities. The source for these abilities will be this listing with some obvious omissions. Just use some common sense on what's balanced and what's not, and you'll be fine. If there are any questions, feel free to ask me or co-GM SamtheDeathclaw.

Though they are "Angelic" powers, you're not really limited to christian characters, just any character who has done any particular good act in the past, out of character for them or not.

Name: Prikazny Petro.

Gender: Male.

Age: 30.

Appearance: Petro is thick and fairly tall, standing at roughly 5'8". He has light brown hair cut short, stony gray eyes, and a thin mustache. He has numerous scars from heavy fighting throughout his life, and a weather-beaten face. He wears the typical appearance of a Cossack proudly, and many find this frightening in and of itself, for the Cossack are renowned fighters. He wears a salt-stained leather jerkin, with trousers and leather boots. Plain, if salt-stained, clothing, basically.

Equipment: In addition to his clothing, Petro carries a flintlock pistol and an iron small sword with simple lines on the handguard, a fairly simply weapon, heavily used despite its ceremonial origins.

Powers: Healing, Purification. He is inexperienced with both of them, having little use for them as a warrior.

Skills: Petro is a pirate by trade, after having deserted from the Cossack army. He can sail and navigate, and fight, of course. He is a strong swimmer- rare for a sailor- and a decent grasp of both land and sea tactics for small groups, due to his time in the army and his piracy.

Bio: Petro- Prikazny is a rank- was born in the Zaporozhian Sich of the Dniepro Islands. He joined the Cossack army once he came of age, having never cared much for his home. He showed a keen mind for the warfare, quickly taking to the rigors of military life. However, he wasn't well suited to taking orders. It wasn't so much he was against orders as a rule, but if he saw a more logical solution, he went for it.
So after a few years of this, he deserted, keeping his rank and removing his family name. He wandered for a time, degrading himself with base banditry and other such, before eventually finding himself at the Mediterranean coast. He instantly fell in love with the sea, and found a ship to sign on to. The ship, his first, was attacked by pirates. Rather than cursing his luck, he joined the pirates, eventually working his way up to the captain of his own ship.

A certain incident completely changed his world. He was in port, taking on provision flying under a false flag. They hadn't managed to steal enough provisions from their piracy, so they were in port selling off booty and taking on food and water. However, as he walked along the port in Cardiff (having left the Mediterranean some time before) he saw a young boy being swept out to sea in the wake of a ship. Without thinking, Petro removed his weapons, dropped them and dived into the harbor, swimming quickly after the boy. He dragged him back to land, and pounded the water out of his lungs.
He was hailed as something of a hero, and found he quite enjoyed it. He also found he had gained some strange abilities. The boy had been nearly dead, he was sure of it. There had been a flash, before anyone got there, and the boy was suddenly coughing up water and starting to breathe again. So, hearing of the stories of strange powers, he set off to find out more about his powers, though he feels no allegiance to either side of the war. He gave command of his ship to his first mate, and promised he would return to take back control.

I have some questions about... well, a good portion of this role-play.

1) What exactly is the setting here? I know nothing about the 1600s, so with that in mind, what is the state of technology, weaponry and society?

2) You say that there are 'obvious omissions' in the power list. What exactly are the powers that are being exempted from the list of available options? I see this as being highly open to interpretation, and feel that it is better to know the specifics than to take a stab in the dark and hope for the best.

3) Do these 'seraphic' characters receive any special mentions or privileges in their day-to-day life? How are they treated? Are they formed into specialised groups and given objectives to accomplish, or do they just wander and do whatever they feel like?
3a) Is there any specific explanation of the appearance of these seraphic people?

4) (Related to question 3.) Are all the player-characters grouped together in one place, with an overarching mission? Or are they all acting independently of one another?

5) Will PvP combat be involved in this? If so, are there any rules by which combatants must abide?

6) Are there any general rules for participating in this role-play?

Thanks for your time.

Well, that was quick. Also, you've made Sam sad.

1) I was worried about people not understanding the setting... Flintlock, but armor and swords are still largely in use. This is after the renaissance, so technology is slightly better than medieval.

2) Specifically, invulnerability. The rest have to be dumbed down to none OP status.

3) They are treated special, as the nation is largely christian. As for appearance, not really, though it may as time progresses and your powers become more powerful.

4) Independent. They can work on either side, or go their own way and kill both sides. Or flee.

5) Yes, and it will work as thus. Both writers write what their character does, and we decide which one is better. Your character can die, and you can put in another sheet if you wish for continued play.

6) No Mary Suedom and trenchcoating. I don't think me and Sam care as long as you aren't being outright dickish to one another.

Your welcome? Sam can answer questions, if more answers are needed, which is probably an inevitability.

If you can find it there's a 3 part mini series on the subject called "The Devil's Whore" that does a good job of giving you a feel for the era and the technology available at the time as well as the key historical figures at the centre of the conflict like Oliver Cromwell and co. I think you can still get it on 4oD and probably a few other streaming sites.

@Rudyn: On the powers front, are we bound by things like Physical / Spiritual Angel like on the listing? And do we have a limit on the powers we can take? Some of them seem like natural Angel abilities and others like individual powes.

Name: Elsabeth Kohler

Gender: Female

Age: 30

Appearance: Elsa is a simple, humble peasant woman, standing at a little under five feet in height. She's not unattractive, but she's very much a sturdy, hardworking woman, more focused on work and survival than looking pretty. Her brown hair comes down to her shoulders and could do with a cleaning, while her body is thin and hungry, and likewise unwashed more often than not. Her clothes are simple, undyed, handwoven, and heavily stitched. She has a friendly smile and kind brown eyes.

Equipment: Elsabeth has little in the way of possessions save the clothes on her back and a small bag of medicinal herbs.

Powers: Elsa has the power to heal with just a touch. This power extends to far more than just wounds. She has restored the shattered leg of an old soldier, the sight of a child blind from birth, the breath of the drowning, the ears of the unhearing, the limbs of the crippled, the health of the cancerous. The only thing she has not proven capable of healing is death itself.

Skills: Elsabeth is a trained midwife, and in this day and age that makes her more reliable in many ways than most physicians. She's a clever woman and prides herself that she only loses one child in ten and one mother in twenty, a lot of that owing to her herblore and wisdom regarding its application. In the past few years she has gotten a lot of practice in treating issues other than pregnancy-related ones, and has become quite adept at treating the wound of sword and arrow or battlefield diseases like dysentery.

Bio: Elsa is one of the many inhabitants of the Germanic lands who has been displaced and terrorized by the terrible war that has torn their home apart, a terrible conflict that will come to be known as the Thirty Years War, perhaps the most terrible and bloody conflict to have taken place in millennia. The War has taken everything from Elsa - her husband, conscripted into the Swedish army and slaughtered by Hungarians, her daughter, raped and murdered by French knights, her son, hanged by Saxon raiders. Throughout all the loss and anguish that she has befallen, Elsabeth has endured, simply putting one foot in front of the other.

The only reason Elsa is still alive is due to her medical skill, and the only reason she's still sane is because of her work. For years she was a follower of a French army rampaging across her home, conscripted to use her skills to treat the wounds and illnesses of the soldiers. She did it, despite the crimes many of these men had committed against her people and her family, and the many crimes they committed against her personally. The Almighty called upon them to turn the other cheek, to love their enemies and pray for them, and so she did, clinging to her Faith as she clung to her labors.

In 1640, the French army was routed by an Austrian force. Elsa survived only by feigning her own death, hiding among the corpses of the fallen until the Austrians had departed. Elsa then picked herself up and began to walk away. She walked east, soon finding a group of refugees. Many were sick, wounded, or pregnant, and Elsa offered her services as a doctor and midwife. For a year they made the long journey from Germany to the comparatively safe France, where the group slowly dispersed, finally leaving Elsabeth in Calais, where she scraped together the silver for passage from Calais to London, where she opened up business as a midwife.

Just her luck that only a few months after arrival, a new war would break out, and near the same time she began exhibiting an ability. Her doctor skills soon became useless, any injury, illness, or ailment she desired to remedy she could bring an end to with nothing more than a gentle touch. Now Elsabeth finds herself torn - she has a moral obligation to use this ability, but if she reveals it she will become a prize for either side, and all Elsabeth wants to do is leave. She's seen enough of war and brutality for one lifetime.

I'll ignore my righteous fury over the ignored 'E', and thank you for helping CA.

As for powers, I'd prefer we stick to physical, and no more than 2.

I think elaboration is needed on this one, he's a bit too tall, and he seems to carry too many weapons for the average human spine. Also, the pub isn't a thing here, so the respawning is a no-no.

Lastly, for everyone, you'll need to describe the potential of your element control. Fire tornado's, while cool, are a bit overpowered, and I think we'd all prefer you be limited to shooting fireballs out of your fist like Zuko.

My character.
Name: Alexei Petrovitch

Gender: Male

Age: 42

Appearance: Alexei is a small fellow, standing at around 5 feet. He's a thin and nimble man with some muscle mass in his upper body. His hairline had been receding for the past decade and his hair had just turned white recently. His eyes are still sharp as they used to be, but their odd silver color can put off some people. His right ear is shredded and deep scars go across the side of his head.

His garb is one of a wanderer. Dim colors that can blend into the earth or the trees color his clothes ? simple, light and not restrictive. The only pieces of armor he carries on his body are his arm-guards.

Equipment: A longbow, a quiver with forty arrows, working tools (A hammer, some nails, a spade), an axe, a skinning knife, flint rocks, an orthodox cross on a chain around his neck, a deck of cards and a torn doll. He carries most of his equipment in his rucksack or hangs it behind his back, over his right shoulder.

Powers: Alexei can manifest semi-solid arrows and even a bow to use them with (although his regular bow can handle them as well) that when fired can pierce through any armor. He can even divert the arrow in different directions, plotting its chart through the air to its target's heart. Alexei can also release multiple arrows of this kind, although he can only control and pilot one arrow at a time.

His eyesight had improved much and he can now even command his hound through his thoughts.

Skills: Alexei is a skilled scout and tracker. He is a very good shot and a decent cook. He is skilled in skinning animals and more than once worked with an animal's remains to create knick-knacks that attract rich customers. He works closely with his wolf friend whose keen senses keep the duo alert and ready for action.

He's an excellent sharpshooter with his bow and can be surprisingly deadly with his spade against unsuspecting and unarmored foes.

Bio: Alexei was born to a couple living in a small village under the heel of a local lord. His father hunted in the woods and supported the family while his mother made various items for sale in the village. They were members of a small orthodox congregation that was routed from London by the Anglican zealots, and they later found a home in a more rural landscape. One day in the forest Alexei's father encountered the lord hunting in the woods. He warned him not to touch the large game in there and that these woods were his.

The father reluctantly agreed, but before leaving the scene he saw one of the lord's companions take a bag filled with poisonous mushrooms. Unable to watch the tragedy unfold, he ran to the castle where he barged into the kitchen and stopped the mushrooms from being served at an ongoing ball. After the lord discovered one of his companions tried to poison him and his family, he executed the man and gave Alexei father the right to be his gamekeeper.

Alexei grew up with his father in the woods. He learned about the various animals and flora growing there. When he was old enough he started practicing with a bow. He learned how to catch rabbits when he was only nine, and confronted more violent animals by himself when he was fifteen.

At the age of nineteen Alexei encountered a massive black bear who wandered into the local woods. The encounter left his ear disfigured and ended his father's life. He buried his father by himself near their home and a week later informed the lord of what had happened. The lord gave the same responsibilities he bestowed upon his father to Alexei. It wasn't long until his mother passed away from grief and he was left to live alone.

Alexei lived his life quite well. He found a girl he loved and married her. A few months later she was pregnant and by the end of the next decade the pair had three children ? two girls and one boy. He lived a happy life in the countryside and only rarely had to encounter violent wildlife or poachers that he dispatched with ease. Over the years he started doubting his skills of detection and wanted to his son help him. The boy's outrageous refusal to dabble in killing animals and go out into the wild forced the hunter to find a temporary alternative, and so he 'found' a wolf cub after dispatching its mother.

He called the dog after his grandfather, 'Noah', a name he would have given to his next son had his wife not gone infertile.
Six months passed, and in that fateful day Alexei was away on his regular daily hunt. With the local armies passing through the countryside, they all had to fill their bellies and satisfy their needs. Since the local lord had left for a call to arms from his brother, the village under his protection was already ripe for the picking for the advancing armies. To this day Alexei does not know who exactly decimated his village and killed his family, but all he was left with was the shadow of his former self.

Alexei found himself a wanderer with no aim, but the need to look after his hound ? the last thing which remains from his old life, drives him to move forward and tend to his old companion Noah.

David, the revolver wasn't even invented until 1814. This is taking place in 1642. And James Bowie, the guy who we named the Bowie Knife after, wasn't born until 1796.

You've got a few problems, mate. A good few.
1. Putting anything a long the lines of "You'll find out." in a bio is pretty much a bad idea. It's perfectly okay to not reveal every single thing that's ever happened to them, but you do need some stuff.
2. A lot of his equipment is kind of off. Katanas have yet to spread outside of Japan, as they didn't open trade to the West until 1854, roughly. Revolvers and Bowie knives have yet to be invented, as mentioned by PrinceofShapeir. And at this point in history the only people who commonly used bows were hunters.
3. "a very quick temper he can easily be pissed off and he's really laid back." directly contradicts itself. A person can't be both easy to anger and really laid back.
4. Your grammar could use some work in general. While it's not really unnecessary to observe every rule at all times, punctuation and capitalization should be used pretty much everywhere on the Escapist.

That took a lot longer than expected. :|
Hopefully I didn't make any ridiculous mistakes- that does happen-but if you see any, feel free to point them out!

Okay, grammar is still a problem here. You also repeated strategics twice. You're allowed to leave off on the bio, but don't turn it in asking us for help. Also, crossbows are better than bows, but neither are needed if you have a gun.

I choose to take the woo as pure, unadulterated enthusiasm. The only problem I see here, is that for the powers to be unlocked you need to do a good deed. Like a REALLY good one. Sorry if that was unclear.

I don't see anything wrong. Still, I feel like denying it, just to see what happens. :p
