Well I'm pissed off and it's all over a Super Mario World rom hack. What happened was that a person, who I will not name because they don't deserve the publicity, decided to make a rom hack of SMW called Notte Luminosa and it went relatively unnoticed. But because this waste of a human felt his game wasn't noticed enough so he decided to fake having Leukemia and said his last wish was to have his game let's played by some one so several let's player began playing it in order to fulfill his wish. But after about a week some mods at a rom hack forum found the bastard's facebook page where he had been posting regularly and had even posted a picture where he was perfectly healthy. The one good thing that could come out of this stunt is that since some of the let's players decided to request their viewers to donate to cancer charities so maybe someone else's life was saved from the money that was donated. *sigh* I just wish some people could just leave this planet.

Yeah I realized that afterwards I just wanted to get my anger out a bit because I found it to be really petty that someone would fake having cancer and dieing just so that their game wold be known.

So wait a minute... what this guy did is not even the most shocking part. The most shocking part is that there's an entire community of people who mod 2d side scrollers and share with others... apparently.

What's even more shocking is that the person who's into modding 2d side scrollers and lying about cancer looks like a pimply faced teenager, the game he's modding is probably older than he is.

If you're going to dig up old stuff because you think it's cool, at least dig up something GOOD; like make your own Doom WADs or Duke 3D BUILD maps. Damn hipsters.

Yeah some people are just dicks, luckily the majority of us are on the side of 'no you don't do that you utter prick'. I remember a similar story coming out from Bungie regarding the Recon armor they handed out to a select few people who impressed them. Some people where willing to go to horrible lengths to try to get that armor from the Bungie staff.

A Bungie employee recently received the following message over Bungie.Net:

Hello, my gamertag is [Omitted] and my names [Omitted], im 15 and live in Michigan.

Anyways, I'm a big fan of Halo, as a matter of fact i sold my PS2 o buy a Xbox, Halo2, and Xbox LIve. I spend so much time on this game. It's my life. Just last week my older brother who is 21 deployed to Iraq. Last Monday he died in action, =(. It's been miserable these last few days.

Now, this is not a lie, my brother who also played Halo wanted Recon. He would always be like "I wish i had it" BlahBlahBlah.

Ever since he passed, I've been thinking of ways to remember him. And it hit me, Recon Armor. Now, Now, I know what you're thinking: "Some other little kid asking for Recon" One, i could care less about the armor, I just want it to honor my brother who died fighting for us. =( This is not a pathetic attempt to get that dreaded armor. I know you will probably block me, or just flat out ignore me. But, before you do just please put yourself in my position and think about it. It would mean so much to me. And more than likely i wont receive the armor, could you at least reply explaining why? It's not a lie what kind of sick person would lie about something like this for video game armor?!

Once again, please don't just ignore it. and at least reply. If you even read this which i doubt.

Please consider this.

Thank You, Sincerely [Omitted] =(

Present company excluded, we're generally not in the business of being skeptical, and this really pulled at our heart strings. It's impossible to imagine how such a tragic loss must feel.

Unfortunately for our friend, we have a sharp memory. The young unnamed person above had pasted this exact message in a window directed at every person on Bungie.Net with gold text. This in and of itself is not a bad thing. However, what is a bad thing is that he had done the same thing with his previous version of the message several months ago:

Hello, my gamertag is [Omitted] and I've been a fan of Halo since Combat Evolved and really love the series and everything you guys produce.

You guy's are the reason I sold my playstation in order to purchase Halo and an Xbox. I love you guys! Last week my cousin also a Halo fan Gamertag: [Omitted] passed away. I made a thread about her in the forums and it got over 300 replies. She was awesome and loved Halo. It's been really tough this last week without her. I have been grieving ever since last Wednesday. This is not a lie, I'm telling the truth and just need something from my friends at Bungie. I've not tried taking L337 screenshots, or faking videos for Recon Armor, I'm a great member of the community and have done nothing wrong. The reason I want Recon armor is because my cousin [Omitted] who I love and miss oh so much, wanted Recon so very much. I just want it to honor her, and remember her. I want Recon for her. I don't want it to run around saying 'Hey I got Recon' I want this armor for my late great cousin [Omitted] ='(

Thank you, Bungie

-[Omitted]

This isn't something a good person does. This is something a terrible, terrible sub-human does in an attempt for something as petty as a visual for a video game. And this is something someone wants to do if they want to guarantee to themselves that they'll never, ever have that visual. And, for the would-be heroes out there, I did confront the above user on the topic and he confessed. When I told him that he was put on the list to never receive Recon, he tried to bribe me.

OT:

When I first the first line of the OP, I thought you were just making a rage thread about the ROM hack you mentioned. :p

But yeah, that does sound pretty despicable.

That's what you call "fully-erect"? I've seen longer sticks in a crisp packet!

OT-
Wow. I'm not sure what's worse really.
The fact that he lied about a serious condition in order to get people to play his romhack, The fact that he put in the time and effort to make a SMW romhack or that while pretending to have leukemia he still using and posting images of himself on his facebook page.
Sheesh, If you're going to lie. Then lie to yourself first!

This is actually funny . Why? Because he said so many times in his message that his story was not a lie . Usually when people insist they aren't lying , they are lying . People who tell the truth , generally , not insist they are telling the truth because they naturally assume the opposing party will believe them because it's the truth .

OT: What's so bad about pretending to have cancer? What i find sick about this story is that people went and checked the guys facebook to verify his story . Now THAT's sick . We really live in a world were people can check anything about you via the internet . Scary . This is why i don't have facebook .

TL;DR: Facebook is evil.

I experienced something similar to that except it was suicide. The first time he did it on Skype right in front of me and... I freaked out. A few minutes later, he came screaming at me for broadcasting it to everybody then chilled out. Some time afterwards, I figured out that I wouldn't be able to do anything about it if he did do it so... I'd actually wouldn't stop him next time. I wasn't really close friends with him but some of my other Skype contacts detested him all too well. When they told me that he attempted to do it again, they threaten to call the police on him and immediately backed out.

Only then I realized what happened... Mr. Attention here thought faking suicide would make me his friend. I. Don't. Think. So. You don't earn friendship from me by scarring someone on an emotional level over the internet. Ever.

So a guy decides to fake illness in order to get attention.

Lots of people feel sorry for him and decides to play his mod to make him happy.

People encourage others to donate to charity for the benefit of charity.

I see one dick and others doing something nice. Getting mad at "people" seems wrong, but that might just be me...

It's typical on the Escapist to see brooding misanthropy from people having a bad day every now and then.

Somebody lied to get something they want?

Colour me surprised, I've never encountered such behaviour before in my life ¬_¬

Still makes me smile when somebody is genuinely surprised that somebody would do that :D

Misanthropy I can deal with and to some degree understand, but I dislike generalizing humanity based on one person. Especially when the same story tells of others being decent human beings.

TL;DR: Facebook is evil.
I actually read the story and here's the quote of the actual post
If you've been on the irc in the past half hour, then you probably already know.

I've been battling with leukemia for the past year of my life. However, no matter how much chemo I went through the cancer just wouldn't go into remission. I'm at the point where I have a week or two to live, according to the doctors.

As such, I'm tying up loose ends before I croak.

So, with that in mind, I just want to thank all of you for putting up with me as long as you did. I'll be the first to admit that I was a honest to god brat when I was active here. And yet, I made friends. I made hacks. Hell, one of mine even got featured for a bit there!

My one regret is that Notte Luminosa never got Let's Played by someone worth a damn (read: anyone). So someone get on that. Or not. Not like I'll get to see it, anyways.

So keep on chugging, [Omitted] Don't ever change. Except when necessary.
By the way I'm purposely not listing the website cause OP doesn't want it here to add more publicity to the chap and I just know you guys can't resist going there if I provided the link.
So he went ahead and lied to an entire community, pretended to have a fatal condition for publicity and you're saying the only issue with this story is that they found him on facebook? For all we know they checked because they wanted to make sure that he actually died and if so to send condolences, considering how many people were fooled I doubt they were calling bullshit from day one.

But I agree with your TL;DR Facebook is the epitome of all evil and I'll never touch the stuff again.

Yeah, I saw that Proton Jon let's play. Game was boring. Got through like an episode. I don't know why people hack SMW only to make it look way worse than the original. I couldn't give less of a fuck about the cancer thing though. What the dude did was virtually harmless. Yeah, it's a dickish, manipulative thing, but I can't see why I should care. What came of it? Some dudes did some let's plays and some people donated to charity. Some guys who visited the same forum as him and (let's be honest) probably didn't care ALL that much about him thought he bit the dust. People bite the dust all the time, I doubt it was really emotionally breaking anyone. Worst thing that happened probably was that people who actually had to deal with cancer might have felt their experiences were being insulted and their emotions manipulated. Yeah, undoubtedly sucky, but not something I can bring myself to get riled up over. I've lost family to cancer and had a cancer scare myself once, so I don't think I'm lacking empathy. I just don't think it's that big of a deal in the long run. All in all, whatever.
