Honestly, this game sucks.
Maybe that's because it's a really old game?
I have to object to this one. Just because a game is old doesn't mean it's bad, unless you're a graphics freak in which case go back to crysis. I still enjoy master of orion and it cane out early 90's (and no i didn't like the sequels).
Perhaps I should have explained what I said more. I'm not saying a game is bad just because it's old. But someone who plays the game years after it comes out probably won't enjoy it as much because they have higher expectations after playing far advanced games. As to why the original poster doesn't enjoy it, it's probably because of the games age and the HL games may just not be suited for them.

Valve and the Half Life Series cater to certain people, like Bungee and the Halo series. If it's not you it's not you.

I'm with you, I only liked portal, the Orange Box was a little bit of a waste of money (Don't do online play and HL:2 is average in my opinion). Which is why I traded it for Bladestorm.

Old things can be good, Age of Empires, Transport Tycoon for example, if you dislike the game so much but still crave to know the story to play HL:2 go to Wikipedia and read the story.

Everyone has their opinion, you've said yours, but that opinion, generally, on here is looked at like saying Halo 3 sucks on any X-box forum.

@Kraken
Agreed, unless the old game does something better than the newer games (like deus ex which is the best blending of RPG and FPS I've seen).

@Barry
It depends on the game. Something like serious sam doesn't need one, it just serves as an excuse to shoot stuff.

Back trolling so soon after being suspended...? Why waste your time posting if your not going to contribute...

On topic : The game doesn't really have a story, its more a sequence of events much like all the Half-Life games in my experience.

Heres a trick to enjoying older games. Pretend its ten years prior and not even think about the likes of HL2, Killzone 2, or Halo

Thats how I'm able to enjoy FFVII... Cause at first I was like Holy shit what is this garbage... But than it grew on me

When exactly does the story start on Half Life 1? I'm only playing it so I know what the hell's going on when I crack open HL2 on the Orange Box.
Yeah, that's a pretty dumb reason. The stories have almost no relation whatsoever, only a few characters cross over. With this one sentence I shall explain to you everything you should know from HL1 to understand HL2:

That guy in the suit who talks weird and has a briefcase offered you a job.

I think people consider this a trolling attempt because the OP doesn't mention WHY he thinks the game sucks. Just that it sucks.

Half-Life was the first FPS to have scripted events. They CREATED first-person scripted events, with no-cutscenes. They also created a fantastic atmosphere for it's time and fun enemy AI. The weapons are very memorable and lovable, each with its own advantage and disadvantage, and the story never really kicked in until Half-Life 2.

You also have to remember that the game was massively moddable. Counter-Strike, possibly the most famous online game of all time, was built on the Half-Life engine, as were hundreds of other mods.

But, for its time, it was a fantastic game. You have to keep in mind that this game is quite old. How old, you might ask?

Wait for it....

Almost ELEVEN YEARS OLD. For a FPS to still get played eleven years after it was released is pretty impressive. Hell, I sometimes load up Opposing Force or some single-player Half-Life mods and really enjoy myself.

If you don't like it, then don't play it. If you want to discuss why people liked a game many many years ago, then don't open up with "this game sucks". I can list some games that I honestly think are piles of shit, but I'd get flamed to death, so I won't bother.

As far as the story goes, you don't really need to know much. Personally, I love the Half-Life story because not many other people know about it. It isn't thrown in your face like all the others, and I like doing a little bit of research to try and figure it out. It makes me feel special.

I can write up the story here for you if you want. I can tell you more than Half-Life 1 will because they hadn't really decided on the story until Half-Life 2. It's really just an alien invasion...

But I won't type anything unless asked. Spoilers FTL.

You know, you were right, I was rather insulting in my post, and I apologize for that. I unfortunately see far too many troll threads to keep the ol' "counterattack" instinct under control all the time. However, you should realize that your tone does not help this instinct; I'm reading less "seriously, what am I missing here?" and more "hurr old game sux" from your original post.

Half-Life 1 was best known for presenting both its gameplay and its narrative in a wholly unbroken continuous format. There were no cutscenes, no "meanwhile" cut-aways, and very few drastic map changes; rather than individual, self-contained "levels", you could run around in entire sections of Black Mesa, and see what your actions on one map accomplished on another. While this wasn't unheard of, Half-Life 1 pulled it off with panache, and that's what made gamers sit up and take notice. It may seem rather commonplace by now, but this paved road was once a trail that HL1 helped blaze.

I'll admit that the actual story in the game isn't anything spectacular (scientific experiment goes wrong, aliens invade, soldiers come to "clean up"). But the fact that, aside from one brief episode of unconsciousness, you experience the whole thing as a very long day in the life of one extraordinarily unfortunate theoretical physicist, and that half the story is waiting to be found in nooks and crannies- there are still games today that struggle to show that sort of experience.

ON TOPIC: I felt this way after playing them about a year ago and still don't care to much for any of them.

So you've hit "Forget About Freeman", huh? So I imagine you heard the radio broadcast, but just in case I'll sum it up anyway.

"FORGET ABOUT FREEMAN! We are cutting our losses and pulling out! Anyone left down there now is on his own! I repeat, if you aren't already, you are now-" *BOOM*

So here's the story so far:

- You are a simple theoretical physicist in a hopped-up spacesuit
- Aliens want to kill you
- The United States Marine Corps wants to kill you
- You are trapped underground with something that is making the United States Marine Corps retreat

If you're expecting the game to spoonfeed you the story with cutscenes and readables, that's not going to happen. Valve have made an art of giving you just enough to go on and letting you fill in the blanks yourself.
Ahh, nostalgia...

Thanks for making me remember how awesome that game is.(wasn't too hard tbh)
