Really it has to do with being anonymous on the net. When no one knows who you really are it enables you to say things you wouldn't normally say or say those things in a way that you wouldn't.

There is a woman on VeryDemotivational who uses her real name and a photo of herself and trolls there fairly frequently. What about those who are not anonymous? Many of the trolls on say /b/ are well aware that if they go too far it is certainly possible for someone to track their IP address and find them. The is no true anonymity on the internet. It might be harder than normal to find out someones real name but it is by no means impossible and many trolls are well aware of that seeing as how many of them do it themselves.

Well, see, it started way back when, when humans first appeared on Earth. After learninq that hostility and competition will allow an individual to survive, the human's reptilian brain took that information, and then many years later and guite illoqically, tried to base a society on such an ideal. This society then labeled itself as "civilization", and from then on hostility between two unlike qroups of individuals was acceptable. Which brinqs me to modern America, which I am assuming you are familiar with because of your reference to Obama, which still uses that old ideal of competition. Now, this would be fine, however since in this competition your bet is, literally, your life, people began to take society seriously. This led to cheatinq and man's inhumanity to man and everythinq bad ever, but that is a different story. These people who were conditioned to hate anythinq they did not aqree with then took this incorrect life lesson and applied it to everythinq they did, includinq conversinq with other humans.

In short, people are mean because society says they are supposed to be, and since they are massively insecure and have a qapinq void in their life, they go alonq with it.

this is all true and everyone and i mean literally everyone knows it but nobody wants to chanqe it because they are lazy and have lost the ability to dream qreat thinqs

Really? Do you know this person? How do you know that is their real name and picture? I could sign up that my name was Marc Davidson and post a pic and no one would know that wasn't me. I am not calling BS on you, I am just making a point that you don't really know, unless you personally know.

Tracing IP's is not easily done and would require you to own the forums being posted to, or having Mod level privledges where you could see the forum logs for access and posts. So if you are trolling on a board, the average joe can't just get your IP, a Mod or SysAdmin would have to have a hand in it.

EDIT: Also having a IP address and being able to trace that back to a physical address of a person is a LOT of effort and technically requires police or a courts intervention. Not saying people don't get around that, there are ways to do it.

And yet it gets done. If you remember the cat marine video on 4chan the subject was identified by users extremely quickly after his post and then he got assfucked by the proper authorities after users had turned him in.

I actually don't know what you are referring to. I stopped hanging around 4chan a long time ago. Like I said I am not saying that it can't be done. Just difficult and again, not knowing this situation, whether Mods or Admins were involved, or if the person in that scenario left a trail that allowed him/her to be easily tracked.

The vast majority of forum sites do not have the people that 4chan has, and your average fanboy troller or someone who wants to just spew bile about some subject is pretty safe from any repercussions for their actions.
