I used to listen to metal as a genre but never perosnally liked it. It may well be good to people who like it. I do not like it.
I wasn't questioning your personal tastes, only commenting on how you inferred that metal is "just" simple, talentless music. A lot of songs require years of dedicated practice to even come close to playing.

"Screaming is talentless" is yet another good example of a misconception actually, seeing as anyone who tries it without actually knowing how will have great fun as a mute for the rest of their life once their vocal chords die.

Although even i know Nickelback isnt Metal.
Are you calling bands like Iron Maiden, Europe and Bon Jovi noise or are you talking more about Death Metal. As Death Metal and other stuff like it can be just noise because if not I think that this might be a misconception right here.

Techno's the same thing, but if you can say neither's music then anything made after 1980's is 'just noise' as many older people would state.

I completely agree. At least bands like Iron maiden had a rift. Todays metal is just yelling and the same note strummed 50 times with a double bass peddle hit every second.
Dude, it's "riff". Also I disagree. Metal encompasses Maiden, therefore Metal is music. You ignore a lot of modern metal like Dragonforce who I don't particularly like but they are nothing like what you described.

I'll also bring up this, to show how metal does not care for your opinion anyway...

My dad keeps telling me that she is very musically gifted, moreso than basically all other pop and rock acts. He persists despite my derision... And often tries to school me on who is genuinely talented or skilled musically. I play guitar and piano, write songs...and occasionally perform in public, which has always gone well so far. I'm not saying that I know more about music than he does...but I certainly don't know less.

That the songs from Glee are original. Unfortunately i do know people who seem to know so little about music they didn't realise Jump from glee was a Van Halen cover... Oh it makes my blood boil. Glee? Absolute fucking dispair more like.

**There is a thread like this that I found, but it's solely based on GAMING, not music - other than that Search bar approved**

So I was browsing through the Metal section on iTunes, hoping to find a band that can quench my musical thirst... and came to find that advertised among the top "Metal" albums, was Nickelback's "Silver side up", and perhaps I'm being picky, but Nickelback are at the MOST pop/rock...

Or am I associating them too much with Rockstar?

Anyway... What Musical Misconceptions have you found and what did you do about them? respond with a nasty message? share your story!
i would not class nickelback as pop/rock or metal, they are just rock thats all something that is in short supply now.

though i must agree the classification system on itunes is pretty messed up

Indeed, especially that stupid @$$ screamo music with just demonic screaming and like you said, a one note and a bass hit, over and over and over
The definition of music is organized sound. So it may not be very good sounding, which I agree with you guys on, but it's still defined as music.

Most of the "metal" i have heard could be Norwiegan black metal (which was a few guys with long black hair in make-up making gravelly throat noises) - And Bon Jovi & Some iron maiden is more Classic Rock.

Too many times i have heard someone say that Linkin Park is "shity music that only cutters listen too" usualy followed by claiming that "_________ (insert genre of music or a spesific band) is the best and your gay if you listen to anything else."

Too many times i have barely held myself back from breaking several laws of physics and jumping through my computer screen to beat the shit out of them. I realy like Linkin parks music and hate people that generalize.

Is there something wrong with Dream Theater? Sure, I don't think their the best band ever but I still really like them and do think they are...

In before the whining elitisism about Dream Theatre's awesomeness.
Damn... You called it...

Anyway, I hate a lot of misconceptions about metal. Especially the ones about how it's all a bunch of screaming.

Bon Jovi as metal is a pretty massive misconception. He is, at his absolute "hardest," soft rock.
Bon Jovi is Glam Metal. Which is still part of metal.

Well yes that is pretty noisey but Iron Maiden is one of the bands creditted with helping bring metal into the mainstream but Bon Jovi is Glam Metal which is a lot more similar to rock. Well it was the 80s you could of gotten away with anything.

Well, here's one. All metal consist of people growling into mics, and playing really really fast, all at really really loud volumes and with stupid amounts of bass.

Heavy Metal is a very loose term, ranging from bands like Queen, Van-Halen, and hell even some of The Kinks music, all the way to Children of Bodom or Gorgoroth. The sheer number of sub-genres are maddening, and a lot of those sub-genres have their own sub-genres. Plenty of places I could start at for examples to disprove this popular misconception but let's go for the other end of the spectrum (Christan Metal aside.) to Death/Black/Doom/etc Metal, Symphonic Metal. I present for your consideration:

Infact I recall this one being used in the World Figure Skating Championships.

Trans-Siberian Orchestra is a great example of this, for as you can see they base much of their music around classical works.

That has a bit of the growling, but the song is from a pair of concept albums, based roughly around Goethe's Faust, with the growling voice being the character of Mephistopheles

.

Hammerfall actually falls more under the heading of Power Metal then Symphonic Metal but still.

Now whether or not you actually like any of that is a whole other matter of course, but the stereotypical eardrum destroying noise it is most certainly not.

Then she's a failure of a torture device, isn't she? I don't think much of her, but at least she seems to be able to sing (more then what I can say for Paris Hilton).

OT: That "Screamo" is considered "Singing". I give singing a very loose definition of "adjusting the pitch of one's voice to create a melody". Screamo does not.

What is wrong with you people!

I, still in secondary school in the UK, am a metalhead among the masses of pop loving, metal hating morons. Whenever people find out that I like metal they just say "it's just screaming down a microphone". That is ALL they ever say.

If they actually had the attention span and mental capability of listening to a metal song, they would hear that it's not "just screaming down a microphone" but a series of complex rhythms and guitar riffs...

Far more complex and talented than you need to be to string out a chain of words to a rhythm.

People can dislike her songs as much as they want, but you have to be able to recognise her talent. She studied music and worked as a songwriter, so she isn't some talent less pretty girl the record company picked out of the crowd. She has got to where she by working hard.
