Apparently, the ad below by JC Penny is a big deal, and a lot of family watchdog and feminist organizations are going batshit crazy over this crazy "sexist" commercial. Here's the link to the Yahoo story as well [http://news.yahoo.com/blogs/trending-now/j-c-penney-sexist-commercial-internet-celebrity-passes-155551183.html].

I mean, seriously? Just because they aren't targeting pre-teen girls and their moms, doesn't mean that they are being sexist towards them. They are just plainly acknolowding a very, very well known fact: Men like sex. No need to go ape shit over this, is there?

EDIT: Here's the raw link to youtube, the embedding doesn't seem to be working: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=lE7y8cUyuS8&feature=player_embedded

Holy balls, that's the chick from Fast Times at Ridgemont High! Wait! That is Fast Times!

I for one think this is pretty funny. Not especially creative, but funny. It's nice to see a commercial that's self aware.

As for sexism, if anything the sexism is directed primarily towards the male part of the population. They're essentially saying "Hey, we know you like tits. We bet you can't focus on the clothes. We dare you to focus on the clothes. But we know you can't. Because you're a guy. And guys. Like. Tits. Fact." And they're right about that. One Million Moms is saying that it "negatively portrays women as little more than sexual eye-candy for a men's clothing pitch."
No, One Million Moms. It's not sexual eye-candy for a men's clothing pitch. It's just sexual eye-candy. You know what? Phoebe Cates agreed to do that scene for Fast Times. She didn't walk off the set in a huff, talking about the degradation of women. Sure, that scene and this commercial objectifies women, but it also makes a very unsubtle point of "we know you're going to focus on the tits here, guys" which makes mock of men as sex-crazed fiends. And a lot of guys are. But you know something, on the other side of that same coin, I've seen a lot of women who treat themselves as objects.
Quite simply, women need to stop getting all up in arms about things like this. These two characteristics, both male and female, have always existed, and they always will. You're not marching towards a society of perfect tolerance and understanding One Million Moms. Sexism exists in men, and it exists in women. Every time we thing of a woman as nothing more than a sexual tool we're being sexist, yes. But every time a guy does something that guys inevitably do, and you think "men are so stupid/rude/messy" you're doing the same thing. It's like you're painting a wall, but you can't see the mongoose behind you ripping all three other walls apart. Sexism is a thing. Just accept that. Go with the flow.

Huh, I didn't realize that bikinis were sexist. How foolish of me. I simply must tell the millions of women around the world to stop degrading themselves in such a manner!

Frankly, I think it's sexist towards both men and women. Objectification is never fun, to say the least, and men are assumed to be perverts who want to do nothing but stare at bikini-clad women all day.

The ad is more sexist towards men than it is against women.

It's basically implying that men lack any form of judgement when something that might appeal p their sexual senses is put on display. I.e "You'll buy this because we just shiowed you some tits!"

I guess the difference between men and women is that men rarely get their panties in a bunch over things like this that's blatantly offensive. They know how to "take things in stride"! (along with the fact that most men aren't earing any panties that can get bunched up of course :p)

Oh how wrong you are.

You'd be surprised how much pretty much all people actually enjoy being reduced to sexual objects given the correct setting and mood. It's just that men as well as women are pretty selective about WHO is allowed to view them as sexual objects.

The old "Only people that I find attractive are allowed to make sexual advances towards me, but the ugly people should just stay away"-mentality, which is quite prevalent among the general population is evidence enough for this.

I visited the One Million Moms website in hopes of finding more information or an article or what-have-you, and I saw that they were getting all their members to harass advertisers for 'Dancing With The Stars', because of a transgendered contestant, so they wouldn't support the show anymore and it wouldn't be allowed to air.

Not only is it not okay for women to be OBVIOUSLY sexy or men to find them sexy - it's not alright to support people who are transgendered. At first, I didn't seem to get it. I didn't understand how that correlated to equal treatment. Everyone, no matter the gender deserves equal treatment...right? And then I saw the AFA (American Family Association) link on the bottom of their website. The same people who told their members to warn their family members who are apart of AARP because they could be supporting equal rights for homosexuals.

And in reading the One Million Moms "Purpose of Campaign" introduction, one should understand that the argument wasn't about sexism, even though that's what they made it appear to be all about. It's just about that dirty filthy act that a man and wife have to do , to get a glorious child. The essence of life and eternity. The only thing that makes a female a woman. It's just about 'sex'. And the media shouldn't be forcing PORNOGRAPHY by way of a woman in a bikini - into that little piece of Heaven's brains.

Do you see? Think of the children!

You are mistaken my friend, objectification is always fun. I do agree with the not wanting to watch at bikini clad women part. Bikinis try to leave stuff to the imagination but fail, either wear something sexy but not too revealing or nothing at all if you're going in that direction.

OT: It is sexist though. It's only sexist because of the line "that way, everybody wins" clearly changing the target market of the advert from men to women, specifically wives or girlfriends. The idea is that the men are supposed to be looking at the girl (I know I was) and that their wife/girlfriend is supposed to be looking at clothes for them.

I don't want to be pidgeonholed in the same category as the One Million Moms group because I have a damn vagina.

The commercial? Whatever. Its the attitude that you're demonstrating here is what irks me.

I really wasn't pigeonholing you with the OMM group, but I see how you might have gotten that impression from the way I wrote that post, especially there at the beginning of what you quoted with "women need etc.". That should have been changed to "groups like OMM need to etc." to better reflect what I was trying to say. Apologies. I was more addressing One Million Moms in apostrophe.

I respect women, and I respect men, I'd like to make that clear. But there are some women and some men that have lost my respect over issues like this.

If they thought men wouldn't be focusing on the clothes at all then it would be a useless advertisement.
What we run into here is a matter of what the ad tried to say, and what it actually ended up saying. Although I suppose what it ended up saying is subjective. So, I think I might leave this thread altogether. Usually, everyone argues about stuff like this until everyone goes home mad, and I'd rather not do that.

HEY! I'll have you know that your assumption of men not wearing panties got my panties in a bunch!!!
Hehehe jk.
You've basically summed up alot of the male views on this because when I see ads like these I simply just roll my eyes or chuckle to myself. No point in getting worked up over a stereotype about the male gender. Yes I mean that in all honesty. As you've stated. We can take $hit.

So my point is this.

[HEADING=1]Commercials ALWAYS do this to appeal to men! Ignore it![/HEADING]

I knew it! Women and everybody else with boobs: you're being sexist right now. Stop it!

I'm glad somebody finally stepped up to the plate and explained to us simpletons that Phoebe Cates is sexist because she let people see her excellent rack.
