I was reading about this on the internet earlier. I think people are getting it wrong on a lot of levels, both attackers and defenders. In the end there is nothing sexist here, or worthy of concern, the very fact that this is being made into an issue and being given a national platform shows that feminism is totally out of control and has no credibility.
Using an attractive member of the opposite sex to pitch a product is nothing new. Notice the lack of outrage over all of the hunks used to pitch products to women. Fabio... who is one of my "go to" examples due to the amount of time he lasted, sold tankers full of substitute butter product by being a sex object for women. Women tend to admit it less, but they are just as vulnerable to this kind of thing as guys, and are targeted exactly the same way. Guys have their bikini babes, and girls have their muscle-hunks and little pretty boys. The only reason why this is taken seriously is because there are politics involved, the issue needs to exist for certain power bases to exist, and when the real issue is dead the people calling the shots (generally left wingers who rely on the threat of things like racism and sexism to justify why they should be in power to fight against them) have to create the issues by attacking every stupid thing they can find, and trying to justify why it's a threat.
To be honest as guys the stuff directed at girls tends to be invisible, because honestly I think we care less about sex to be honestly... all stereotypes aside. It's the girls who tend to consume all those romance novels and such, and really that kind of thing creeps into just about anything directed at a female audience. In comparison while having sex involved can improve something's performance with men, I don't think it's as nessicary a part of the package. To be stereotypical a guy can get into a sporting event without the cheerleaders, or become entranced by machines like say motorcycles and huge trucks (to keep this very basic). In comparison just about anything directed at women has to have a relational component and at least a single romantic subplot. Movies directed at guys might have some sex and romance involved, but movies directed specifically at girls tend to have that as the plot/point, and that's kind of what defines a "chick flick".
As guys think less about sex, we tend to be a lot more oblivious to how exactly all the same stuff we see directed at men are being directed at women. We just don't have anything to gain or care about the presentation of all these muscular "himbos" and effeminate pretty boys It's unusual when something like the "Twilight" ad campaign gets the attention of men due to becoming such a pop culture phenomena, despite the fact that we're utterly surrounded by it. Sex sells, and it's not just about men being unable to look away from attractive women and it working to sell products, because the same exact thing works with women and is just as frequently exploited.
