I see nothing wrong with that ad.. But its stuff like this that drives me insane.. Women whine and scream about being joked about, and will do the same thing. Then they cry about being treated "equally". If they want that, they need to quit being hypocrites or start joining in the fun.

This IS sexist! I don´t trade in my game too buy a girl out for dinner! I use it the spare cash to buy me another game! Ptth that ad don´t know how a guy spends cash ....

Well I can see how this can be sexist but really, Why care?
And what is the sexism in it? The guy not listening to his girlfriend? Or the guy that just sit there and play games all day?
Really guys should be more upset by this ad then the opposite sex ...

Imagine if every time the male lead in a movie is portrayed as a bumbling moron, guys started complaining and tried to get it banned.

That would be some funny shit right there.

.... THIS is Sexist?
No, this is a cute, somewhat humorous ad, promoting second hand game trade ins.

Sexist, would be if any of the women who worked on making the ad got paid less than the men for doing the same amount of work.

I can't believe people are actually hung up over this... actually, I can.
Exactly. The only thing offensive about this ad is the quality of animation. Although it was going for the 50's PSA style of thing, but it did it wrong.

I enjoyed the peanuts reference though.

It's totally sexist, and here's why.
- The way the man perceives the voice of the woman when he zones out. Yeah, I get it, sometimes you just don't want to listen. But when it's in a relationship like that it just goes to show a lack of respect for your partner. Judging by how he ignored it, the topic's been up for debate before. Thus they probably haven't talked about it in a rational adult way, which leads me to believe that the guy's going "Fuck it, she can whine all she wants, I'm going to do it anyway", which is clearly disrespectful. It's, in different terms, pretty much saying "I'm the man in this relationship, I make the decisions, so I'll blatantly disregard your feelings and keep doing what I find fun." Not cool.
- Also, the woman shopping and cleaning. Really Australia? It's not 1955 anymore. Also portraying the man sitting around when his wife's cleaning, along with the 'Do you need any help honey?'. If your wife is cleaning and you're sitting on the couch with a beer and a video game - you're a douche. The home isn't one person's responsibility, you both live there.

And agreed, there are lots of adds that are sexist towards men too, but that doesn't make this ok. Not cool, EB.

I maybe would have read your post, but when I saw the youtube clips of Anita Sarkessian I just wouldnt bother. If you agree with that crazy ***** that condemns everything and calls it sexist I am worried for you. I mean, c'mon, she put up a channel on youtube just to rant about how everything is so sexist. SRSLY?
She put up a channel to point out and criticise sexism in the popular culture, tropes in stories that suggest sexist undertones and images and media that portray and in some cases, encourage, sexist thinking.
For the most part she merely addresses tropes in popular culture and gives arguments as to why they are bad, hell sometimes she isn't even actually ranting against something having sexist imagery, sometimes she just raises discussion over what technically constitutes as 'feminist' when making a character (see her discussion on True Grit or her episode about Veronica Mars).

I don't agree with everything she says (for example I hated the Sarah Conner Chronicles and never interpreted True Blood as any kind of political metaphor) but in her opinions, sources and research she is more well spoken and better thought out then most vloggers I've seen on the web. And the people who comment on her videos have been shown to possess more then two brain cells.
More then I can say for The Amazing Athiest, I can certainly say that. I wince whenever someone brings up an Amazing Athiest video because I'll be exposed to five or so minutes of shouting, swearing, having no idea what the hell he's talking about and then if I read the comments I get to wince through the usual:
"Lol durrrr bitches be dumb lol!"
"Yes but surely he missed the point of (insert point here)"
"FUCK YOU FEMINAZI FAT BULLDYKE JEW LAWYER SHIT!!"
Meanwhile when I see a new video of Anita's, I look forward to seeing a discussion on an aspect of popular culture and I stroll through the comments with glee to see how people are discussing it in a (by comparison) calm and intelligent manner.
Seriously, read a comment stream on one of her videos some time, hardly any swearing or BS to be had.

For god's sake, she isn't 'ranting', she is pulling up images and videos and just discussing them or pointing out patterns within them. Plus it should be noted that her video is primarly to talk about sexism in popular culture, so don't be surprised that almost everything she posts about is in some way relating to sexism in popular culture. Also YES, I DO agree with her on certain issues.
Fembot advertising IS SEXIST
Those liquor advertisments ARE SEXIST
'Ironic advertising' is STILL SEXIST
In her 'Tropes against women' series I find myself agreeing with all of them, especially the 'Women in Refridgerators' and 'Evil Demon Seductress' and 'Straw Feminist' ones.

Simply put nothing that she 'condemns' as sexist I have ever disagreed with. Some of it may go over the top but, like I said, compared to other vloggers out there she strikes me as very well informed and calm and rational person.
So what if she spends a lot of time pointing out that there is a lot of sexism in our media, both in advertising and in general television/movies/games if you ask me it's an elephant in the room that someone bloody ought to talk about.

Also for the record, she isn't one lone 'crazy *****', she's a college graduate with a masters degree in Social and Political thought and a bachelor degree in communications. Her videos have actually been used in Women's studies groups in universities. Just generally she's a well educated woman who does this not just as some lone hobby but as an actual career.

I don't want to sound like a fanboy here, though I probably have, I'm just saying that I've seen crazier out there. Just because someone objects to a lot of stuff doesn't make them crazy. Of course that doesn't mean you can't disagree with them, but still...
Going to go ahead and put this in a spoiler tag because it takes up too much space.

it's even more stereotypical when sometimes in the video the woman sounds like an adult from the Peanuts with the blah blah sound.

I don't get it. How can it be sexist to suggest that all women are interested in is having men spend money on them?

Yay, let's reinforce negative stereotypes with a terribad ad. Let's also use "chick" in the title of the article, also being sexist, woo.

And for those who think the ad, or that using "chick" like that aren't sexist, check your privilege people... Way to set equality back boys, now grow up and clue in that being male doesn't entitle you to everything.

It's not a strawman, I've never twisted your words I just reposted them so everyone can see how stupid your comment was
Thus implying that by objective standards it is stupid, not by your own subjective standards of what counts as intelligent or stupid.

Also using the term 'excruciatingly histrionic woman' is a pretty poor generalisation too is it not?
Why? A woman who'd take offence at this would be hurt by an extremely petty thing- to take offence at such a minor advert is a characteristic of having a histrionic personality.

But I won't go on the reason why I'm not being constructive or adding to the debate is because I've been locked in these arguments before and it always ends the same with everyone getting stuck on logical fallacies and neither side gaining anything from each other's rhetoric.
Then why'd you start something? It seems very silly in itself.

Never mind the ancient steriotyping/bad joke, that's the obvious thing to get angry about because geezus I've seen bottom of the barrel flash cartoons with better animation.

What were EB thinking when they set about having this ad made? idiots.

Only reason it pisses me off is because the dude traded in 3 rather old games for a brand new one. At most what you would get for them would be $25. Maybe. Fuck off EB and tell the damn truth for once.

I would call this sexist....if I hadn't seen this kind of thing for myself IRL. Also the Guy comes off much worse then the women here. He disregards her feelings and does what he wants anyway. It is just a happy coincidence for him that he was able to save money. But it could have been structured better if the women had suggested the trade in of games and not the store clerk. Then the Guy could have compromised and the women would come off as perceptive and caring.

also: The animation looks like someone with a 5000 dollar budget trying to look like a 10 dollar indie project or something.

Marketing Guy: Lol this will totally relate to those 20 somethings on da interwebs. They will eat up any low budget animation.

Yeah, though it's a good thing nobody ever complains about stuff like that here on the Escapist v:

Wow, it's really interesting what people complain on this commercial about."It continues the stereotype that women don't play games." A lot of women don't play games, and that's fine. There's nothing wrong with women not wanting to play video games. Also, though it has problems, its core message is sound: trade in your games, same money, take your lady out for a good time.

The add is boring and relies on stereotypes. I'm more offended by the fact she was dusting (seriously, who dusts anymore?) than the fact she didn't like games. Kinda thought it was a really lame ad, like some weird male fantasy.
