You've got it. I honestly find having "relationships" in these games as rather pointless. They really add nothing to the game except fan service, and it's not like they add any character depth either. I really only had a "relationship" with Tali just so I could see what she looked like. Seriously though, these romances serve no purpose in the game, and the fact that so many people get their knickers in a twist over not being able to bang a certain character is just depressing. Maybe you CAN have a gay male character, but none of your squadmates are gay? The solution being just don't bang any of them and reject any advances by female characters.
I absolutely disagree that the romances serve no purpose. In a game as character-driven as Mass Effect, I think they're a great way to develop character and involve the player in the story. Maybe YOU don't care, but that doesn't mean everyone is the same way. I play Mass Effect primarily for the story, and for me the romances add a lot.

Its probably been said, but this is most likely a political maneuver. Considering the scandal that followed ME due to the fact that it included any 'Sex' at all, I think Bioware might be simply playing it safe for now

In our race same sex couples cannot produce a child together.

In the Asari race they are able to produce a child with any sex. Its not about physical contact, its about a mental connection. That right there proves that the Asari cannot be gay.

Bioware isn't homophobic, just look at dragon age. But just because the Asari have female qualities doesn't make them a female in our standards.
They just sound female, use female pronouns, look female, have a female body, etc. It is so utterly transparent as to be ridicilous. You can paint an elephant blue and call it a whale, but it is still an elephant.
Can said elephant reproduce with the same gender? I think not.

Like I said, because the Asari are able to proves that being gay in their race is an impossibility.
You're missing the point. What the Asari are "officially" is irrelevant to this discussion. Bioware intended for players to react to them as female.

It's funny how the majority of the arguments here that are in some fashion opposed to, or dismissive of the inclusion of homosexual characters refer to the homophobic demographic as a status quo which needs catering to.

What about Jade Empire? Silk Fox was a ninja for crying out loud.

How does forming a "relationship" with a character deepen them? A PG-13 sex-scene adds nothing to the story, or to that particular character other than their preferred positions. Going to bed with a character doesn't' add a page to your codec, does it? I'm all for Shep getting to know his crew, and I sincerely love the loyalty quests they added to this game, but I just don't see how becoming romantically involved with a character deepens them at all, adds to the story (which is also primarily why I play) or does anything other than give BioWare a hook to get the more juvenile gamers to play their game.

the simple answer is that bioware is making games by nerds for nerds, being male hetero is a default assumption, heterosexual females are a standard point of interest, homosexual females are hot and bisexual ones just hit the spot

it's all just a one giant male nerd fest, sex shouldn't be a factor in a game, mainly becouse you can just go watch some porn and have a free hand for it, or if you perhaps are the 0.001% and can have sex, do it, google covers all your fetishes if you're the majority, while, let's say there's not an option to instead of playing an fps, grab a gun and go kill people

then again, bioware games are so boring and uninovative, i'd rather just go to the park and read a book in the sunlight while spending my play time on games that bring something new to gaming, so i don't know why people care about this in the fist place

That you're equating "forming a romantic relationship" with "sex scene" betrays the issue here. If you're speeding through the love interest conversations just to get to the sex, ur doin it rong.

Yes I understand the "Too easy to make a joke out of" was just a joke, which is why I never really addressed it in my previous statement. I never took that personally.. Infact I honestly got a laugh out of it :)

I apologize if I came off sounding a bit disgruntled, but I guess either it was the way you responded to my original post, or the way the little voice in the back of my head that reads to me when I look at words made it all sound the way it sounded.

I know that no where in your reply did you say I was a homophobe, but like I said previously, it just sounded that it was implied, as it did when I read previous replies to other comments.

I guess seeing this sort of thing done in similar topics, where the person in your shoes was actually trying to do what I assumed you were doing, I couldn't help but think that I got caught up with yet another person who was out to pinpoint every little detail and flip it around to make the original poster of the comment to be a bad person.

I can see however with this reply that I have mistaken, and I apologize for that.

I am aware that doing everything you said to publish a title is a bit much to ask, but I can't help but wonder "Gee there's got to be some one out there with the interest of game design or film production that's willing to do this.." I mean after all, There is obviously an audience for said game/film, and there's good money to be made. I meant nothing but good things by that, even though my original post didn't end up as I expected.

Film production is what I know best, which is why I slipped out of game mode to the film industry in my examples. I felt it was the best method to give examples of what I was talking about. Though I'm sure you could get by just as easily without them. I just throw them in there regardless of who I'm talking to, because unlike you, 9 times out of 10 others would misinterpret what I meant without them. I had brought up Pyramid Head in the movie, because I recently showed it to my GF. She had asked what that creature was, and why he kept showing up... After explaining to her the significance of Pyramid Heads vital role in Silent Hill 2 and other games... She felt rather confused as to why he appeared in the movie at all... To have her bring up the same question I had of his appearance, being that she is still fresh to the world of Silent hill, (only getting to see SH4 and Shattered memories for now, which she loved to death and wouldn't let me go a day without having a near heart attack playing them for her :p.) I felt this was a good example, seeing as how she wasn't part of the core of which you speak of.

I played them for her because for some reason, playing games is rocket science for her for some reason, so most of the time she sits me down to play them for her. Just throwing that out there for no particular reason, lol.

I think a lot of what you said in relation to my response lies under differed opinions. I feel that revealing an element about a character such as sexual preference should contribute to the storyline to help the audience associate better with said character, you feel the opposite. There's nothing wrong with that in my eyes, for we all have differed tastes and ideas of the way things should or could be.

We're all just as confused as you are in terms of their decision for ME. I'm sure however if this was known before the game came out, the developers would have a lot of emails in their inbox regarding the issue.. The problem is, there was no hint that this was going to happen, and their reasoning is left in the dark..

Which is typical for a gaming company, they often keep things in the hush hush so they don't get themselves in trouble in anyway. Like for example: How neither Nintendo of America and Tecmo aren't giving any reason as to why they aren't distributing Fatal Frame 4 to America for instance.. Sure there's a lot of speculation as to why, but nothing is being said by them.

So I guess all we can really hope for is that they see the issue and decide to address it in their next ME. Yes I know it should have been done in this one considering they allowed the option to be a lesbian, but I guess it's too late for that now, the game is out, and unless they decide to throw it in as DLC, I don't think we'll sadly ever see a fix for that.

Although I do agree that the "trials faced by a homosexual" is something that is done to death in films when it shouldn't be. What I meant in my previous statement that there is so much more that can be done besides what you've said in the various clips of my response. There are ways to make a homosexual character in a movie/game look and feel like a normal person like they are in real life without falling back on various default methods that you have described that developers and producers use as a safety net because they are afraid to try anything otherwise... It is this fear alone that we don't see a LOT of things that we do in games, homosexuality being one of them. It's completely and utterly stupid that it's done this way, which is why I suggested that some one from the community should show them how it's done.

The best method is to just agree to disagree, I guess... Seeing as how we both have varied opinions and there's nothing that can really be said to change the opinion of one another. Of course I'm talking about our differed opinions on how homosexuality should be depicted in games and movies. I do want to thank you, however, for not greeting my reasoning behind my opinions with hostility.

Also, I would like to apologize again for going on the defensive in my last post... I've seen some nasty things go down when it came to topics such as this one, so I couldn't help but feel like I was being put on the spot for my first response. It was wrong of me to assume that, and I'm glad that you were able to prove me otherwise with your response.

Garrus really? That's kinda... hmm, I don't know. Do girl actually find him attractive? He kinds looks bad ass, but he looks more like something that'd bite your head off than kiss you. Not to mention that his skin looks like it's sand paper. I don't know.
Seing as how Jacob is a Paragon-Prick, and Thane creeps me to nightmares, he really is the most charming and witty choice around, isn't he?

Simple.

Guys (usually) think that girl-on-girl is really hot. So if you avoid controversy by eliminating guy-on-guy, but add to the "hotness" with girl-on-girl, you're pretty much set when it comes to male (or lesbian) gamers.

But OP, I do agree that less games take the gay option. I have nothing against homosexuality, and I think it would certainly diversify people's minds about the whole aspect to put it in games.
Thing is, exactly the same percentage of men and women find a pair of their opposite-sex counterparts to be sexy. It's about 30%. So it's catering to both gay men and 30% of women.

*snip* While, yes, in Dragon Age you can have a gay male, the only man who would have sex with you is an overly flirtatious idiot who is full of himself. It's then painted worse as it's revealed that he's bisexual. I don't know why, but I just felt irritated how the bisexual character acted almost like a whore. *snip*
Hey, worked for me - I loved it. =) It's a nice contrast to the (admittedly sweet) non-lamppost-licking Alistair.

Thane's appearance kind of cracks me up. It literally looks like someone took a Calvin Klein model and reskinned him with a fish texture.

I agree with Mother Yeti and RyVal here, it is quite strange that they did not include a M-M situation here, seeing that the whole idea behind Mass Effect is "your choices matter." Thane would've been a good choice, he's like Zeveran-Assassin, androgynous-but without the arrogance that he's the Ekindlers gift to Men/Women and the whorelike attitude. they didn't have to throw the person onto the Normandy but maybe a guy he meets on the citidel? (or Conrad Verner-he'll do anything Shepard says)I am a straight Male, but I still like to make every situation ossible while playing a role-playing game, and as for the whole "story thing" maybe Cerberus did change his persnality. And on the subject of the Asari, they rfer to each other as "she", they call their young "daughters", and they look like attractive females. sorry for the rant, but I wanted to get my opinion in.

It's just business. They know their audience, and that's primarily young men, like myself, most of whom are heterosexual, also like yours truly. Besides, for me in ME1 I had the sex scene (with Ashley) just kind of happen without me making it happen, as if the game just said "enough is enough get laid already", and had Shepherd just randomly start fucking Kaiden out of nowhere I would have been put off a little bit. Since I wouldn't have found it attractive. At all. They are just appealing to the largest demographic. Besides, I consider gays and lesbians to be in the same boat, so it's not a "step-backwards". Also, most developers are male, I suspect most of them didn't want to risk drawing the short straw and have to spend a month making two dudes screw. Given that the game was developed in Canada, if they tried to find out who in their office was gay and make them do it, you can bet your ass that the Human Rights commissions would be on the march. Immediately. Without the disgruntled gay employees actually having to go to them.
