Shadow of the Colossus Writer Speaks Out

Justin Marks, the man tasked with turning Shadow of the Colossus into a screenplay, wants you to give the SotC movie a chance.

Marks, who previously worked on Street Fighter: The Legend of Chun-Li, admits that adapting games into movies doesn't always work. "I think many of the games haven't worked as movies because it's hard to find the right game. There are very few that lend themselves to movies," he told The Hollywood Reporter [http://www.riskybusinessblog.com/2009/04/colossus-writer-speaks-out.html].

And Shadow of the Colossus is one of them? Marks thinks so. He says the minimalistic nature of the story, which features a young man riding a horse and killing giant creatures to save his beloved and not much else, makes it easier to adapt this game rather than others with more fleshed-out worlds. "With a lot of games there are so many elements in the universe you spend your time tearing down and tearing down," he said. "What's nice about this game is that it's so sparse so you can start building right away."

That's nice, but building things that weren't there in the first place is the easiest way to alienate fans. Marks, however, guarantees that he's trying to avoid adding typical Hollywood clichés like a silly sidekick.

Still, Marks is obviously looking at a wider audience than gamers exclusively, and he thinks that, when it comes to having mainstream appeal, SotC is the perfect fit. "With a lot of games you're caught trying to please the fans and the mainstream audience," he said. "What's so nice about this game is that it's all seen through such an adult lens, so that what pleases the fans also pleases a wider audience."

It might be hard to not immediately write this movie off, but we still haven't heard anything concrete about what it's going to be like. So let's save our facepalms for another day.

Cause its an adaptation of a video game and its being made by Holywood...I'll bet in Live Action.

If it were animated I bet they would use Pixar stuff and ruin the feel of the game...

I think they will be making it live action, but as so little has been released about the film its very hard to tell.

Still, the guy wrote the Chun Lee film. As much as I wish to get very annoyed with him for touching this, its is better to wait. Remember how everyone thought that watchmen would be terrible?

Video game movies don't work for the exact same reason that watching someone play a video game gets old. If they did a literal translation of the game it would be a dull movie. So they have to add a bunch of crap, which means people who liked the game will show up and get irked at all the new stuff.

Unlike adapting a book, which mostly consists of just cutting the non-essentials or merging elements to save space, a video game movie must inherently always add material. The fan of the game is going to get annoyed, the person unfamiliar with the game is going to wonder why the film needs to have so many repetitive action sequences (since most games consist of this), and no one walks away happy.

Um, I think a lot of people walked away from that movie thinking it was terrible.

I'm just wondering how they can make a film based on a game with no dialogue, is it just going to be thirteen action scenes?

Darn spoil sport ;D. I was just trying to think of a adaption of a geek classic that the fans generally thought was ok, and realised I couldn't remember any gaming related.

How can anyone say anything bad about this? What else kind of plot was he supposed to give Chun-Li? The direction and editing was the reason that the Chun-Li movie sucked.

Even if it were his fault, there's not a possible way to mess this up. A movie like this relies more on the direction, editing, and visuals than a plot. The only writing that needs to be created would be the built up love interest and the conclusion. Everything else would have the writer simply writing very basic instructions for the visuals on screen. Things like:

"Rumble heard in the distance. The mountain in the distance moves and gets up. Now here's the big action sequence that I have written out on the following pages."

From there, the choreographer, director, editor, and CG guys get to work. In a movie like this, the directors and editors have much more artistic freedom than anyone else. They will be responsible for a good or bad film here, not the writer.

That is, unless the writer decides to fill the movie up with a bunch of talking. Lets hope not.

I think we have a producer in our midst! Welcome to the Escapist! Hope it's sunny in Hollywood!

Seriously, though: not a good sign that the writer feels the need to explain himself and run damage control before he's even written the thing.

I say let Uwe make it. At least then there'll be nudity. Though judging by Postal, it'll probably be male...

If they give Wander any lines, it's going to break my heart. Not because it'd be ruining SotC (though it probably would be). It'd destroy my hope, my dream, of a Half-Life movie starring a completely mute Gordon Freeman.

I seriously hope not. That would constitute a rape. Perhaps a contemplative art film focusing on one or two colossi, or better yet, no film at all. Just let the game be.

I still haven't seen Wall-e, that makes me a bad person doesn't it?

i bet there is

i swear if they bastardize my favorite game someone will pay for it (or more likely i will just be really pissed and do nothing about it except complain). I hate when Hollywood takes something amazing and tries to make a quick buck off it. With games, for example, the plot is done, the character development is done, the storyboarding is done, and the appropriate art style has been found. Yet all of these movies turn into giant steaming piles of sh*t anyway.
