It has been 1 year since the Great Darkness.
One year ago, within the world of Vitalis, life moved on as normal. Cars drove, planes flew, and people continued their happy existence. Finally, the Terran Wars had ended, a peace treaty had been signed, and everyone was talking about how the world was about to enter a Golden Age of humanity. The new rays of the sun were about to dawn over the coming Age of Man.
Unfortunately, all that came over the earth was the Darkness.
For a week, the world was cast into complete darkness. It could not be fought, it could not be pushed away. A candle would offer no light; a lightbulb would be immediately extinguished. People said it was the end of the world! Finally, the cover of darkness was lifted from the world only for people to wish it had never lifted. The Darkness had been born from the darkness of man's heart, and so it gave birth to the darknesses within his head. Beasts until now though of as mythical stalked the land, while the human population had undergone a much more disturbing. The Darkness had changed humans as well- about 25% of the world developed into "Shadows," beings with supernatural abilities mysteriously based upon their personalities.
Scientists immediately underwent studies of these strange new "Shadows," and found five basic parts of their powers:
1:The basic power, which is, once under proper control, nearly effortless to utilize.
2: The weakness- all powers, no matter how great, have some equal and opposite tradeoff for the power.
3: The Armor- A more advanced technique, this requires concentration but allows the user near impunity against all attacks. This ability is found in less than 15% of all Shadows.
4: Limit Breaker: This ultimate attack could best be described as 'high-risk, high-return.' While this attack easily can destroy any who dare stand against its might, it is a double-edged sword. The user's body is taxed to the extreme with this move, and while the lucky ones might slip into a day's coma, some powers require blood, or might even require self-mutilation or sacrifice to activate. Luckily, this power has been found in less than 1% off the entire Shadow population.
5: the Trade: all Shadows possess this power, that is, the ability to absorb or disperse of another Shadow's powers after a 'Shadow Duel.' Powers absorbed are never as powerful as the original owner's were, and the average human can only store 2-3 other powers before they burst from the energy or are driven insane by Multiple Personality Disorder. However, a select few are able to store what seems to be an infinite amount of powers. Urban rumors speak about a man called "The Crystal Reaper," who is able to consume untold numbers of powers at their full potential, all to become the 'true god of this world.' Still, one should always take care with such rumors.
The true threat is that of the government for Shadows. Like all changes, people are afraid and are calling for action. Hundreds of actions make their way through Congress, ranging from licensing Shadows and making their powers public, to immediate and complete extermination. Unfortunately, the only reason none of these movements have been passed is because no one can decide on which of these is the best cause of action...yet. All it takes is a single push to set the scales out of balance.
There is also the rumor of an underground Shadow organization called the Shadow Guardians, who plan on overthrowing the government and placing Shadows on the seat of power.
Welcome to Harbour City, place of 200,000 souls- and about 10 times that amount of people. Here is the greatest safe haven from the outside wilderness teeming with death of every kind. The city seems to support the sky with its myriad skyscrapers. The city is bound in by a mountain range to the north and a lush forest to the south. To the east, contained within the haven, are the freshwater river which sustains Harbour City, the docks, the suburbs, and the farmlands which sustain all life within Harbour City. Finally, to the west lies the Deadlands, outside of the barrier and crawling with mythical creatures of every kind, very deadly and very, very hungry.
...A wise man once said "Never look away- Not from Nightmares, Not from the Truth."
What happens when the Truth is a Nightmare, and what happens when the Truth stares back?
