So I was just playing C&C 3 when I heard airoplanes flying pretty close to my house. Theres a fire about 5 or 6 miles right from where I live. They seem to be doing a okay job at controling it and more planes and heliocopters are coming in. So far no news of the fire on the telly or the internet.

So escapist I guess the topic would be how close has your home come to danger before.

EDIT: They got the fire under control pretty quickly, they smoke is dying down. Which is good because I'm the only one home right now and the only thing that seperates me from that fire is 5 or 6 miles of dry forest and a couple of house who are even closer.

For the record I live in a small area, there are only about 7 house this fire can endanger.

A house sized fire burned across the street this summer. Scared the piss out of my mom. My sister was at work at didn't know about it and I hadn't moved back in yet.

Hundred miles maybe?

Thats my honest answer, my house is pretty secluded from anything that could seriously damage it. We're on high land so no flood concerns. Mountainous area so no tornado threat. Way to far north for a hurricane to bother us at full force.

Fires are another thing but we've honestly never had an encounter with flames that has posed a threat to the house.

I remember that there was a helecopter flying over my house with a large spot light, while cops raided a park right behind my house looking for a criminal. Scary and exciting stuff. That was quite an eventful night. I think they caught the guy too.

I remember about 2-3 years ago there was this really shady house in our neighborhood, the previous owners weren't shady people but something happened that it got foreclosed, the bank owned it and someone bought it and started renovations but quit. Doors/windows open to all sorts of weather (rain, snow, etc) and it just fell into odd disarray. I guess some dealers or bums moved into it. One night around like 2 AM there was just a ton of gunfire, apparently there was some kind of shootout there and the house get set on fire.

Edit: Removed 2nd part because of really bad at remembering timelines.

I had a 32 car pile-up on the highway, that happens to go right behind my house, about 3 miles down... My brother was an EMT at the time and helped out. I had a wild bear run through my neighborhood a while ago, but every now and then I get coyotes in my back yard. I'm on the edge of a city, in the suburbs so having a bear running about is crazy...

i used to live in an army base in cyprus for the british forces and cyprus from late may till middlish september doesnt get any rain at all. that combined with 40 degree temps usually means that we get one or two large bush fires every year.

however a while back there was a massive bush fire on the other side of the island to me where there are also army bases (which are larger then the ones that i live in) and the only house to burn to the ground was the commander of the british forces in cyprus. that got a few laughs from everyone after and also after that they suddenly put an emphasis on fire safety to the point where they have put down large white stoned roads down the bondoo (outback area) to stop the fires. however these themselves cause problems in the spring when we get massive rainfall to the point where it floods some of the lower areas of the local cities and the rain has dug out deep ditches that have got my mums renault meganne stuck in a few times because her tyre falls in and she is fucked from that point onwards

oh we have also had a few tornados down here as well during spring there is some vids on youtube of it

in the second vid those white things making hitting sounds are hail stones the size of golf balls. that tornado alone caused £3,000,000 of damage since it ripped through an army barracks.
weirdly enough i didnt find out about it till the next day

tornados like that happen in cyprus roughly once every one or two years

Well when i lived in Vermont back in 94,95 a tornado hit Burlington. The house across the street had a tree land on it, my friends lived one house down and he had two trees land on his roof and some how our house was untouched.

I've been through a couple hurricanes, an earthquake, and had funnel clouds form over my house. Granted, those were in various places across the country (both coasts and central). They were all fairly exciting.

A cougar [sub][small]not that kind you sick bastard[/small][/sub] jumped over my fence into my backyard once. I kept sleeping until animal control came. A thief was also hiding somewhere near my house once. The police told everyone to stay in their houses, and the police helicopter was circling my neighborhood.

There was a stabbing at the High school next to my house the year before I started attending it. The victim survived without anything too major to my knowledge. They had like 3 police helicopters at the school, though.

EDIT: Also there was some crazy ************ running around my town with a Machete the same year, he never actually killed (or even attacked) anyone, though.

For most of my life, I lived in the midst of a natural Prairie preserve, and it often burned through natural causes (I hope so anyway).

The property line bordered my home, and there's nothing quite as unnerving as a wall of fire that stretches for miles onward. However, the Fire Department was very responsive, despite being 4 miles from the edge of town, so nothing ever came of it.

But it came close once.

This summer a 100ft tree fell down due to high winds. The tree hit the tree in our front yard which deflected it and fell in the road, cracking the pavement. If the tree in our front yard had not been there it would have taken out half the house and my car.

Other then that all other times are from when I put someone elses homes in danger. Fire is my tool of the trade.

Remember the Metro Area/ DC Sniper Spree from a few years ago? It made National News for sure...Anyway, the first shooting happened about 2 miles from my house and about a block away from the then-GF. The whole thing happened within my tri-county area.
