Is it just me or are shotguns in most games very unrealistic, normaly realism dosent bother me but this trend of making shotguns useles unless your half a milimeter away from your target is infuriating, Shotguns are one one of my favorite weapons and I'm fead up of getting all exited in my mutter in a creepy twitchy gremlin like voice only to discover it takes 6 F#%£ing shells to down one enemy!

Another thing; next time you play an FPS find a shotgun stand about 50 yards (in game obviosly) away from a wall and fire. anyone whos ever fired a shotgun in real life will know that buckshot just plain dosent spread out that mutch. actualy I doubt the holes will aper in the wall at 50 yards. Buckshot does spread out no mistake but realy I once stood right next to a wall a meter away fired the shotgun the scatter was nearly 2ft across! (I dont remember the game right now if I do later I will say so) a scatter 2ft across is what you get at 50 yards with wide spread ammo not with standerd 12gauge shells.

there. I'v said my bit about how annoyed I am at my favorite weapon type being dragged through the mud, what do youse think?

in Rainbow Six Las Vegas, one of the enemies put a rifle scope on his shotgun and was sniping my team with it. It was remarkably effective.

-.- have you played galo? shotguns are rediculous bang then bash.
as for other games you just have to get close enough and in most cases thats easy. and in real life i know that slugs have decent range but you just can rely on shot to be uselfull beyond a few yards.

A game is unrealistic? CALL THE GAME POLICE!

Nee-nor!

In all seriousness though, do you expect them to be realistic? And your points are kinda contradictory. On the one hand you're exclaiming that the shots shouldn't appear so widespread, you're then saying that from a meter away, the buckshot spread to nearly two feet wide from a meter away, which is further apart that in most video games. Make up your mind.

shot guns are tricky buggers... you can't have them be to powerful at a range or else players will call fowl(quack!). you have to put them at a short distance to make up for the raw power. Games need to compensate power/range/accuracy/rate of fire/how much ammo/what kind of ammo/etc. etc.

Yeah... I second the whole rainbow six vegas thing. Many a time I have been out-sniped by some dude with a shotgun from across the map.

Try Battlefield : Bad company. The shotgun is effective and has some range.

I get your point too, but realy a meter away with slugs, one shot will put a hole in your gut you could hide a bowling ball in. But I see what you (the second quote) mean about compensation but is a little more range realy that mutch to ask for? ok mabye not sniper shotguns but I hope you see my point.

COD 4 probably has the most realistic shotguns they are so fun to use.
The shot disapears after about 30 feet, as in, vanishes in thin air.
my point exactly. thank you.

I like the realism of the shotgun from metal slug, it tears a tank apart with a few shots. WHOOOHAAA!!!

but seriously... I hate it when games are unrealistic, take bioshock for instance.
it's a city under water... as F**KN' if.
or what about metal gear? Mechas with T-rex voice chips.
Dawn those games developers, always claiming to make the next best "murder sim" we always wanted.

In CoD4, I never used to use shotguns before but i thought what the hell and used one. I somehow managed to get 19 kills (with the aid of one chopper) and 1 death. Truly remarkable for me and extreme fun.

I always loved the shotgun in Doom. It just felt so right and the pump animation was a thing of beauty.

As for the whole balance issue if they slowed down the rate of fire they might be able to get away with giving them a better range.

And yeah shotguns in Halo (especially in small 4 player maps) = stupidly unbalanced.

Halo 3 the shotguns are awful! They work 50cm in front of you, and thats it! They could up the range, but lower the damage? Thats just the shotgun from halo 3. The vegas games shotguns are amazing!

It wouldn't be much fun gameplay-wise if you got hit with a few pellets and went down. A shotgun is a destructive weapon, and I don't know what type of shot you were using, but I've seen pretty good spreads. Not as much as some games will do, but still... There's a reason we use them on a ship. :)

The problem is, campers either have sniper rifles or shotguns.

All weapons have their benefits and their flaws, and the shotgun's is to be a powerful close-range weapon, but extremely inaccurate.

Now, if we did what you are proposing, and made shotguns accurate, it would unbalance the game and have everyone using shotguns.

he wasn't contradicting himself. the example he gave of a 2ft spread at 1 meter was from a game, not real life.
