My two cents on the subject as a whole is simply this:

People as a whole need to stop referring to people who happen to have a different skin color as being of a different race. Even the term 'racism' and it's derivatives only serve to perpetuate the problem as they separate people into different races based on skin color and slight deviations in physical features. The only path to unity is for us to stop categorizing people based on these trivialities.
The whole concept of a racial slur or a race-based hate crime do little to nothing to stem the attitudes or actions of those under the delusions of 'racism' and in fact, serve to perpetuate the concept. I'm not saying that we shouldn't take action on those who act upon the fallacy of racism, but it's certainly not the best solution to the problem by far...
But to the question posed, if the term cracker is used with contempt and meant as an insult, then being offended is only natural. Responding in kind with another, similar insult is of course an incorrect solution but so is labeling the phrase or term a 'racial' slur as that will only serve to further the fabricated schism that people of differing skin color have placed between themselves.

Since it has a similar connotation, if black people can call whites 'crackers' whites should be allowed to call blacks 'niggers.' Kinda dickish to use either, but it's only fair; if they can use racial slurs, we should be allowed to as well.

So, basically, as long as it has nothing to do with slavery, any slur is OK? So it's within perfect etiquette if I go around calling people kites, fags, japs, slanties, skinnies, and whatever else comes to fucking mind, just because we never enslaved them? A racial slur is a slur in the here and now, and they all have similar connotation. Just because slavery once existed is no excuse to say "ok, that one is a bit worse, so it's not OK, but the rest are."
