Yes, it is obviously a racial slur. Is it much of a big deal? Yes and no, I guess. Saying it does make you a bigot, a prick, and most likely a colossal fucking hypocrite. But I can't imagine it doing much harm since it's nearly impossible to make a white person feel bad about being white, since the only enduring bad stereotype about them is that they're racists, which is what 'cracker' is supposed to evoke in the first place.
Exactly. As racial slurs go, it's pretty feeble, because there's no social weight behind it.

Actually, as far as some people are concerned, it already is.

EDIT: Waiting for a whip reference..... do people even know what it means???

*Looks down*

Okay, I wasn't sure if everyone knew that.
I know.
OP: In certain situations it is one. I don't like being called a slave driver.

I always thought the term "cracker" referred to a hacker that hacked with malicious intent.
You know, like Anonymous.

My two cents on the subject as a whole is simply this:

WE ARE ALL OF THE HUMAN RACE!

People as a whole need to stop referring to people who happen to have a different skin color as being of a different race. Even the term 'racism' and it's derivatives only serve to perpetuate the problem as they separate people into different races based on skin color and slight deviations in physical features. The only path to unity is for us to stop categorizing people based on these trivialities.

The whole concept of a racial slur or a race-based hate crime do little to nothing to stem the attitudes or actions of those under the delusions of 'racism' and in fact, serve to perpetuate the concept. I'm not saying that we shouldn't take action on those who act upon the fallacy of racism, but it's certainly not the best solution to the problem by far...

But to the question posed, if the term cracker is used with contempt and meant as an insult, then being offended is only natural. Responding in kind with another, similar insult is of course an incorrect solution but so is labeling the phrase or term a 'racial' slur as that will only serve to further the fabricated schism that people of differing skin color have placed between themselves.

Since it has a similar connotation, if black people can call whites 'crackers' whites should be allowed to call blacks 'niggers.' Kinda dickish to use either, but it's only fair; if they can use racial slurs, we should be allowed to as well.

Basically, I'm saying if you want me to take you seriously, don't use the word. Cause if you call me that, I'm going to think "that is one stupid fucker." And I'm going to treat you like you're retarded. Fortunately, most people have basic goddamn manners.

great, now i am hungry.
this is just so ridiculous, i don't get the obsession the US has with racism, why does everything have to be either so offensive that people go to hell for it or pastel-colored-shirt-wearing-kinect-playing family friendly?

cracker is offensive... i guess it probably should... although context is everything... I'm white and I've been called ****** by a black friend... because he says that to everyone... it just sort of became his way of saying "dude". But again, context.

Could it be a racial slur? Technically yes it could be. Should white people get offended by this term and start treating it like the n word?

Absolutely not.

The n word brings up 400 years of slavery...while cracker brings up...who cares!? White people have been oppressing and killing minorities and native people for all of existence, I am sure we can take a little tongue and cheek riffing now and then.

People actually bent on saying that life is getting hard for the white man are ridiculous.

No white people can never call black people the n word no matter what. Even if they call a white person cracker.

The n word brings up 400 years of slavery, while cracker brings up what? An eternity of land owing and prosperity? I don't care if anyone calls me a cracker...let them, the white man can take the hit.

It is a racial slur.

It just isn't a very good one. 'Cracker.' Really? As a white man that's more likely to make me laugh than be insulted. Especially considering its origins. Yes, a slur based on a whip cracking man with lots of power over others. How insulting!

Then again I suppose it IS rather hard to come up with good slurs to use against the top dog.

I wouldnt be offended if someone called me a "cracker" or a "cracka"

However I would be a bit upset if they called me a "over sensitive morality fag"
OR a "N*gger" which actually happens a lot on XBL. Despite me being whiter than rice!
Its not so much the word but the fact the person using it is trying to troll me! and are almost always some cracka ass white boy who thinks hes E tough talking like hes Eminem!

I would never even consider the idea that I am supposed to get super offended and butthurt because someone said a word that I'm not supposed to like.

That is just pathetic, no matter who does it.

So, basically, as long as it has nothing to do with slavery, any slur is OK? So it's within perfect etiquette if I go around calling people kites, fags, japs, slanties, skinnies, and whatever else comes to fucking mind, just because we never enslaved them? A racial slur is a slur in the here and now, and they all have similar connotation. Just because slavery once existed is no excuse to say "ok, that one is a bit worse, so it's not OK, but the rest are." I hate to say anything is an "all or nothing" situation, but this kinda is; either we are discriminating, or we aren't. There are no half-ways.

Edit: Also, "the white man can take the hit" What the fuck man? Fine for you, if that's what you want, but I don't take responsibility for anyone else's shit, so no, I refuse to take crap for anything done by anyone else. My own fuck ups? sure, I'll take it. "ours" as white men? get out of here (and don't let the door hit you on the way out. 'Cause I don't want ass prints on my door)

Not really, unless you are using the three scientifically recognized races that are identified by a certain blood protein. (And if you are then you would also have to classify Latinos as asians)

OP: Yes it is but no one ever gets offended by racial slurs directed at white people. Maybe it's because we still dominate the system and so do not fear real racial discrimination.

If I can't call a black man a ******, a mexican a wetback, or an asian man a *****, why should it be fine for them to call me a cracker?
