Hey,
I've been contemplating getting WOW and playing. Most of my friends are into small Facebook games now so I'm pretty much a lone wanderer.I decided to come to the Escapist forums and get an informed opinion and so here I am.

These are my questions :
What's it like playing WOW ?
Is it hard to get into ?
Is it as addicting as they say ?
How expensive is WOW ? Do you need all expansions ? Does the world change ?
What should I expect ?
Any suggestions ?
Tips & tricks for getting started ?

Any answer or suggestion would be appreciated.

What's it like? Very basic rpg - tell your character what to do, they do it. Homing automated attacks distance you from the game so it's easy...not enough game for my tastes.
Hard to get into? NO. Hard to get out of? YES.
It is the most addicting game ever. You grind and grind and they always dangle a new piece of armor or a new ability in front of you to keep your wallet empty.
Money? $15 a month, quit before the expansions so idk about their price but you will want them if you play. The face of the world changed once over its 7 year life, so don't expect rolling changes, although patches are fairly frequent.
Expect to lose your time, money and soul to this game.
Suggestions? Don't play. If you must however, bring friends as that is really the point of games like this. IMO you could do other more fun things but playing in a group is the way to get the most out of the game.

I started around Christmas and I've been having fun. It helps to know people in real life who play and can help you get started with the basics. Also if someone refers you you both get bonuses and leveling up is waaay easier. Even if you don't know anyone in the game guilds on the more populated servers are pretty aggressive and it really isn't hard to get in with a group of players. Also you could always try the free trial if you're not sure and don't want to invest any money.

Depends. Playing WoW is a very easy game to get into, but since it's so different from any other game out there, people often quit because they don't understand their roles when they group up. Most of the game (for me, anyways) was leveling different characters through different zones by myself, but end-game content (Where everybody is the max level, and the whole point is to get better gear and weapons) is incredibly group-based, in everything from raids to PvP.

It's really only addicting if you get into a fun guild, or you really get into the PvP. The main reason to log on each day for many people is the obligation they feel to not let their friends down, or the show off something that they spent a lot of time working for.

To start, I would recommend getting the 10-day trial online before buying anything. Just Google for "WoW 10 Day trial", and do that to see if you really want to continue. If you do buy it, most people would buy the Battlechest, which includes the Original game and the first expansion (Should be about US$25 or so, not sure about that). After that, you need the expansions in order to continue playing past a certain level (Original lets you get to 60, Burning Crusade gets you lvl 60-70, Wrath of the Lich King gets you to level 80, and Cataclysm lets you get to level 85). The last two expansions are about $50 (again, not sure). Aaannnddd of course, you have to pay the $15 a month subscription fee, but it's cheaper if you buy it in longer blocks of time.

If you do decide to try it, I would recommend a class that you choose for DPS for a first character. All classes can do well DPSing, so basically choose something that looks like fun ( I personally had a blast with Enhancement Shamans, but Mages are also fun). Basically, you can't go wrong with your first character unless you decide that you don't like it.

EDIT: I suppose that if you felt that leveling by yourself would be boring, you can always join a guild for both the company, and the perks that accompany them. You don't need IRL friends to play to find friends in-game, but it makes it easier.

I recently got back into playing WOW after not playing it for almost 3 years. The only reason I am playing the game again is because some of my friends got back to playing it and convinced me to join them. Don't play WOW if you don't have any real life friends who play also, I have found the game to get really boring without any real friends to play it with.

Also if you really want to play, you can get regular WOW, Burning Crusade expansion and a month of playtime for $40.

I'll answer some of your points.
WoW isn't addictive. No game is. You might have an addictive personality, but the game isn't.
It's not as hard to get in to as it used to, but know that having at least one friend playing helps.
And you won't need any expansion until you hit level 60, unless you want to roll a Goblin or a Worgen.
Final point, listen to this guy;

If you just try to learn, and not act like a total twat, you'll be fine.

By the time I finish this post, the page will probably be covered in responses, but I'll take a shot at answering your questions anyway:
These are my questions :

What's it like playing WOW ?
To be honest, the experience varies greatly depending on what you're interested in. You can quest, kill other players, gather things, explore the world or just chat with your guildies. Personally, I always enjoyed that last one, assuming you can get past the odd prick of a player.

Is it hard to get into ?
No, it's really easy. Even before Cataclysm, the game managed to ease you into the process, and although it might take a while to figure out things like threat and good spell combinations, it was still easy. With Cataclysm out now, it's actually a lot of fun as well. The quests are more interesting, mechanics are explained better, and, as always, there are loads of other people in the starting areas getting to know the game as well.

Is it as addicting as they say ?
Yes :p To clarify, it's not so much a compulsion to keep doing, like I'd imagine crack might be, but you simply lose track of the time while you play. Still, I'd imagine that that could be overcome easily enough if you were determined (and maybe look at the clock occasionally).

How expensive is WOW ? Do you need all expansions ? Does the world change ?
The answer to this question is, thankfully, no. You need to install all the patches right up to the present, and that can take a few hours, once that's done, you can just hop in. If you want to keep leveling once you hit level 60, you'll need to get the first expansion, and at 70 the second, and so on and so forth. Since the release of Cataclysm, the entire pre-expansion world was redone in a much more interesting way. To be honest, the 1-60 free expansionless bits are now better than the first expansion itself, simply because of all the mechanics and interesting features that have been retroactively introduced.
As for how much it costs; 15 dollars a month is the cap, if you buy month by month, but you can get it down to somewhere around 9-10 dollars if you purchase year by year. However, I'd recommend getting a 60 day game card for $30, as it's the easiest way to sample the full game, and see if you like it.

What should I expect ?
Quite literally anything. This is the internet, so anything goes. Chuck Norris jokes and pop culture references are all the rage, so expect to see lots of people going on about those in the major cities. You might also get the occasional prick of a player, but the community itself is by and large a nice one. As for the game itself, expect lots of quests, and some grinding, though that's been balanced significantly since the expansion. Also, there are going to be a few lore references you're not going to get, and there's going to be a lot of content that'll seem remarkably empty, because everyone's now moved on to higher level stuff.

Any suggestions ? Tips & tricks for getting started ?
Gonna merge those two. Start off on a pve or normal server in your region, because the pvp (Player vs. Player) servers can be frustrating for newbies. Yahtzee would have you go horde, but the truth is that both factions are pretty evenly balanced, and pretty much equal amounts of fun. As for what class you're going to roll, there are a couple of important distinctions: Tanks, Healers and DPS. It's a tank's job to soak up damage while the DPS classes do the killing, and the healers keep everyone alive. It's not that important at lower levels, but you might want to keep it in mind when you choose a class.

Anyway, for my recommendation: By all means give it a go, but start with the free ten day trial, and if you like that then play a bit more. Some of the better features are disabled for trial characters - such as guilds - so keep that in mind when you play.

/Edit: Just found an example of one of the new, more interesting quests: http://www.tentonhammer.com/wow/guides/general/peacebloom-vs-ghouls It's basically Plant's Vs. Zombies, but in WoW.

Don't really understand what you want answered, but it's... fun?

Is it hard to get into ?
No. The game is as easy as it gets these days as well, so no matter which class you pick you'll be awesome.

Is it as addicting as they say ?
Indeed it is. If you're not into open-world games where you have to work with others to achieve things it's not your thing though.

How expensive is WOW ? Do you need all expansions ? Does the world change ?
You don't need the expansions, but they add a LOT to the games. It's not minor expansions, but big ones. There should be battle chests(I believe they're called) with WoW + Burning Crusade and Wrath of the Lich King. Cataclysm is still new, so I don't think it's in the box yet. The game + the two first expansions are cheap now anyways, and the third one you can find for 17£ at www.thehut.com. I got my expansion from there since it was the cheapest I could find, but it took a damn month before it arrived from when it was sent.
15 euro/month isn't expensive for WoW if you consider how much play time you get. I'm so sick of the people complaining about the monthly cost when it's actually just a drop in the ocean.

The world will be changed even if you dont have Cataclysm btw. A shame you didn't play it before the latest expansion to see the differences in the zones, but all the changes are really good.

What should I expect ?
An amazing game with less amazing players. Wrath of the lich king made pretty much everyone anti-social and retarded since the game got so damn casual friendly that even 10 year olds could get the best gear. The new instances go back to the roots where the game actually was hard, but they don't realise that. They still think that the party sucks if you wipe(when everyone dies in an instance) and leave the group.

Never played WOW but one of my long-time gaming buddies joined for a while.

It was like he started selling Amway or something cuz he kept trying to get friends to play with him. I never saw him the whole time he held a subscription. Typical phone conversation during this period:

"Hey buddy, the gang and I are going to a movie, want to come?"

"Uh I don't know man...i've been really busy with work and I havent had much time to play WoW this month. I havent used up my hours yet...I mean, to get value out of this deal I have to play...I'll call you back" click.

We all missed him until he stopped playing it and drifted back into our lives.

Nobody should play WoW. It'll suck up all your spare time without even being fun. Go to point A, kill X amount of Creature B, return 10 rotten skunk-testes to quest-giver C... imagine that for 85 levels and five hundred hours, with "gameplay" consisting of "click on enemy, press hotkeys 1-2-3" ad nauseam.

If you enjoy having a second job you need to pay for, go for it. Otherwise, don't waste your time and money.

Only people with no lives or little willpower (or they are just young) get addicted to World Of Warcraft.
I just bet you'd be the sort to tell people with a gambling addiction to "just suck it up" and pull themselves up by their bootstraps, too. Nevermind what them eggheaded psychomologists say, a REAL MAN doesn't get addicted to anything!

You could also try playing Lord of the Rings Online. It's not quite as big as WoW at the moment but it is definitely growing. It is free to start playing, but you need to pay for expansions and new areas. You can also pay monthly and get the whole map, as well as a bunch of other perks. I found I preferred Lotro to WoW, but that's just cause I love the movies. Anyway if you do start WoW, remember to listen to Shamus and STAY THE FUCK OUT OF GOLDSHIRE!!

Personally, to me, it's like dipping yourself into a huge living world of fantasy.
especially after the events of Cataclysm, the world seems to be fully alive.

Is it hard to get into ?
It never was, and after the release of Cataclysm it's even better.
The quests are streamlined into each other, they connect into interesting sub-plots, every class starts with just 1 or 2 spells, so you never feel overwhelmed.
The only downside is the players.
Some people aren't aware of the fact that new players just started, and demand a knowhow that is beyond a beginner. Ignore those bastards.
It's also a tad frustrating to find the Auction house has way overpriced items, until you find one of your own :D

Is it as addicting as they say ?
That depends, are you the kind of person that would ditch his friends for a new shiny item?
Or are you the kind of persona that has the self control to turn off the pc when it's time to study?

How expensive is WOW ? Do you need all expansions ? Does the world change ?
Here, it's 12 euro a month, with another 15 euro's for the original game and the first expansion. you don't NEED any of the expansions to play. They unlock the following if you do.
The Burning Crusade:
Access to level 61-70.
Access to Outland, a level 58-70 zone.
Access to Quel'thalas, the lands of the Blood elves. And thus the ability to make a blood elf
Access to The Blood Myst ilse, the starting zone of the Draenei, and thus the ability to pick that race.
Access to jewel crafting, a profession that lets you ...well... craft jewels that give stat boosts.

Wrath of the Lich King
Access to level 71-80
Acess to Northrend, a level 68-80 zone.
Acess to the Deathknight class. ONLY if you also have a lvl 58+ character already.
Access to inscripting.

Cataclysm
Access to level 81-85
Access to the new level 80+ zones.
access to Goblins and Worgen.
Access to Archeology.

Even if you do not buy Cataclysm, you still have access to the new destroyed world. And all it's new quests.

What should I expect ?
A large world in which you can solo quest, group with friends, PvP with the other faction. and like in real life, a couple of jerks.

Any suggestions ?
Play what you like, how you like for your first character. don't be pressed into a role by the rest of the community. Just discover the world the way you want. Learn the ways of your class and take your time.
Also, roll Horde, because we're more awesome.

Tips & tricks for getting started ?
Get the hang of the basic roles for end game.
Know what a tank does, and how to assist him.
i.e. most new mages or hunters have tenancy to really burst the most damage possible. This might sound like a good idea, but you're really putting the hurt on a tank, especially at low levels.

Have fun, and take things at your own pace.

OK
Thanks for the replies.
I'll try a 10-day free trial this week and see how it goes.
I'll also check for friends.
As for what I've been told of addiction I'm kinda over that phase of gaming. To expand on that , I spent a week cold turkey crunching for an exam , my computer was on and I didn't even turn minesweeper on.Since then no game has really distracted me from real world issues.I sometimes pause the game to get up and play guitar or something.
I did try other online games but sometimes the community was lacking.
I did know someone who met up with a girl from the Philippines through Runescape.
The only MMO I hated was Maple Story , it wasn't hard or anything but the grind via keyboard was awful even as low as level 35 ; and quests given at level 8 that could only be solved at level 14 annoyed me.
I did hear bad stories about WOW , addiction , death , selling gold for profit , prostitution (I'm not joking , I heard of a girl who had sex with someone who gave her money for a mount: 150K gold or something like that). But you did point out the positives and it balanced out , somewhat.
I can't get into RTS or FPS because my reflexes are too slow and I easily lose my patience after failing for the 50-th time.RPGs are the way for me at the moment.

If you have any more thoughts or comments , suggestions , servers etc.

Two more questions , please (*puppy dog eyes*)
1.Is there just PvP or are there co-op modes or how does it work ?
2.What's with this alliance vs horde conflict ? Is it like with sports teams or something ?
