Should you be allowed to hurt/kill kids in video games?

I say that if you're going to include children in the game, you should either make all characters (including the kids) killable, or make scenarios where you logically can't kill them.

However, I doubt this issue will ever be sorted until the general public of the world decides that video games are just as worthy of showing the same content as in film, television and books. Until we all come to that conclusion, we're no longer going to see children being killed by a PC in most mainstream games. Not for a long while, at least.

I say yes because every game Ive played, the kids are annoying. In Fable II your kids bother you every time your in the town, and they follow you. In Fallout 3, they're annoying because they count as enemies but you cant kill them.

I think its pretty ridiculous that a child cannot die in a video game, and personally I'd prefer they didn't do something so stupid.

However, if it really offends people that much its not like games are ruined because you can't slaughter children.

Really, for me, what this ultimately comes down to is "why not"?

If you make a game in which you can kill anyone but children, you are declaring that the lives of the fictional children are somehow worth more than the lives of the fictional adults. This is simply not true.

I don't think so. It serves absolutely no purpose than to be utterly sadistic and sick for your own amusement.
I still remember the day that games stopped being for your own amusement

I guess if you want. I personally don't care as I never try killing kids (shows you have some problems if you do doesn't it?).
No, you don't...if they're videogame kids? It's cathartic because kids are really fucking annoying and you're just not human if you've never once wanted to hurt something that was annoying you.

yes. i hate kids. and in games, theyre even worse. and since i cant kill kids because a life sentence in jail isnt particularly entertaining, its much better to do it in games...

and i was pissed off in FO3 that you couldnt kill kids...
but we made a mod so we could...next time Bryan Wilkes complains about his dad-he gets a face full of lead...hehehe
You just convinced me to buy a computer that could run fallout3 and to buy it for the PC (even though I predict I'll find it a lot more expensive then the consoles).

Not really. Killing kids in games, not to mention real life, is really distasteful and is just plain wrong.
It is not wrong , it's a videogame and thus there is no morality. And, I DON'T FUCKING CARE IF IT'S DISTASTEFUL

Yes other wise in games like fable fallout etc you are given a morality system and it just seems odd that you can destroy megaton or some other really evil thing but just stop short of killing the kiddies.
If your going to give people to be evil go all the way.
Actually, when you destroy Megaton, the 2 kids living there obviously die. So you can kill them.
OT: Violence against children is pointless and sick. And would certainly cause an outrage. So I think i is definitely not necessary.

YES!

Besides the fact that many kids are annoying little shits (in real life and videogames), kids are probably going to be playing these games despite their ratings/content and would find it very weird that they can't kill other kids.

I especially hate it when you are a kid and are extremely vulnerable in that phase, and then ten years later children have evolved to the point where they are friggin invincible. Unless in the intervening time all children have been killed off and now their ghosts are wandering around, nothing about this process makes sense at all.

Maybe killing children would be a bit excessive, but at least letting us hit them and do damage to them would be nice.

I think the best argument for being able to kill children in games is that this seems to send an odd message. So its ok to slaughter a full grown human, but not one under a certain age bracket? Pretty stupid aesop if you ask me.

Its different if its just not that kind of game. However, it can get downright surreal in games like Fable 2 and Fallout 3. You just let me slaughter my way through half the town guard, butcher the inhabitants, and now your saying my complete monster of a character can't slaughter a helpless child because... Does Teresa say no or something?

If it has it's place sure. I was pretty surprised when in Fallout 3, a game that advertises itself as letting you do anything, lets you nuke a city, poison a water supply to commit genocide, enslave people, kill virtually ever single person you come in contact with, but won't let you kill children...

Now the whole premise of the game is to create characters you can do whatever with. so your telling me my psychopathic murderer of a toon wants to exclude children from his rampage? I THINK NOT!

Long story short yes, if it fits the game yes.

Having never played the first two Fallout games, and only having played Fallout 3, I have to wonder about this. I know you were able to kill children in Fallout and Fallout 2, at the cost of having hitmen sent after you. On the other hand, Fallout 3 has Talon Company, the Regulators, and Little Lamplight. And the people in Big Town are able to die, so it's not as though their magic mushrooms make them special.

I mean, if it was only the kids from Lamplight, maybe it could be explained as a perfect version of the FEV, but Bryan Wilks is able to run around just fine in all his retarded glory.

Also, last time I checked, children were more likely to die than healthy adults. And they were also more vulnerable to radiation. But then again, they didn't live in caves and have super mutants for neighbours, so what do I know?

Didn't cause any outrage in Fallout, Fallout 2, Warcraft 3, etc...

If you are going to be an evil character then that's the road you'd want to travel.

All i know is that every kid I've seen in Fallout with the exception of Bryan Wilks is a complete brat. So, yes.
