Should you be allowed to hurt/kill kids in video games?

Sure. If you can kill anyone else, than killing kids shouldn't be a problem. I'd sooner not kill a cute puppy than a child, but I may still kill the puppy.

I don't believe in video game violence.

In most cases it'd be an unnecessary way to whip up controversy from the overly-sensitive, but if developers decide to make the majority of children in a game annoying as all hell (*Cough* Fallout 3 *Cough*), then yes, it should be allowed.

I know they depicted the deaths of children in Prey and that you had to fight their "spirits" or whatever, but if it does fit the plot, I don't see anything wrong with it. As a game designer, one of my big future ideas is to have a game where you are the patriarch of a family and a huge supernatural crisis befalls your town. In the game, you would be able to protect, abandon, or (if you were so inclined) outright murder your family with a chainsaw (kids included). The other characters might start looking at you funny afterward, but if the player chooses to make it a part of the game they may do so.

yeah I was peeved at that...
I bet GTA is the first to implement this, and good on them.
Except, it's been done, ages ago. Go play Fallout 1. Not sure if it was the first, but it certainly wasn't the last. Fallout 2 did it too.

I don't think so. It serves absolutely no purpose than to be utterly sadistic and sick for your own amusement.
That's why I play video games. For my own amusement. And for that matter, why is killing a child more "sadistic" or "sick" than a human being? That sounds a bit hypocritical.

You should definately be aloud to kill kids, especialy PRINCESS! from fallout 3, though the media would have a feild day if a game aloud it. Which is a bit stupid because kids in games aren't real, there's no battle royal explosive coler around some poor african childs neck that detinates when you shoot a kid in a game. it dosn't hurt anyone (who's real) it's realistic it's just a bit moraly questionable, so unlike every other media on the planet games shy away from it 'cos so many games get flamed for being violent.

For the record, I don't randomly kill anyone anyway, because I see no point in it, nor do I enjoy doing so. I can understand asking for more realism and whatnot, but if you're saying that just so you can clamor for the blood of children - fake as they may be - then there are probably some deep-rooted issues you need sorted out.

I'm not saying that applies to you in particular, but it seems that a lot of people want to be able to for only that reason.

I think the fact of the matter is that videogames are abstractions, and should be treated as such. There's absolutely nothing ethically wrong with doing anything in a videogame, when you're not actually adversely effecting another 'being'.

I believe it was Matt Stone and Trey Parker who said something to the effect of the second they start saying this or that is okay to say and this or that is not okey, is when they run into issues. Either everything is kosher on their shows/movies or nothing is. I feel it's similar to games. To say that we shouldn't be able to kill children in a game because it's some how wrong, is also admitting that there's something wrong with committing any (simulated) immoral act in a videogame.

Mind you I'm not even the type to kill people in games unless they pose a threat to me. That's just how I roll.

For realism yes.

For marketing no.

There are times where I wasted ammo thinking I just had to do more damage. Then I took a shot gun to the little girls chin. That when I was trust out of the Capitol Wasteland and back onto my couch. But then I thought about. Killing children would just give anti-game bigots another reason to rant about things they never even tried. Just imagine you scattering some little girl brains...just as you mom walks in. Yeah. Thought so.

GTA should not, because kids are not a part of their universe. Fallout, yes, as I want to MURDER THE FACE OFF EVERYONE IN LITTLE LAMPLIGHT.
True. True. I despise little Lamplight.. That.. Dang.... Princess....

As for the forum post, there's truly no use for killing children (except Princess) as it has no real use.

Except maybe Little Lamplight since they're a weapon-wielding society of children who probably drink and smoke and make a hobby of annoying everyone to death and continuously calling me mungo despite the fact that I (clenched teeth) SAVED their little.. stupid.. FRIENDS.. From a life of SLAVERY!! (Heavy breathing.)
It's possible to make Princess cry by bullying her if you have a high enough speech skill.

I know it's not much, but it certainly made me feel better.

"It's wrong to kill kids in video-games." Bah! What you "kill" in a game is just a visual representation of a kid and i think that these games targeted audience is mature enough to separate fantasy from reality.

i personally would say that it is ok to implement that into games, provided it fits in somehow.

however, it would get so many complaints, a massive rating, and possibly the company would be sued, that it really is unlikely to be worth the effort for most game developers.

Not really. Killing kids in games, not to mention real life, is really distasteful and is just plain wrong.
Ok ok.. so cutting peoples heads of with chainsaws and going on a killing spree is ok but not killing kids?

I dont see why not, I mean there are a lot of things you can do in games you shouldent do in real life, you cant really draw the line anywhere..
