I think the various discussion threads about the game's minor flaws really aren't doing the game any justice. When you discuss things like the level scaling mechanic in as much detail and under as much scrutiny as in this thread, it is easy to assume that it is a major point of contention that makes or breaks the game. When in actuality, it is not.
I'll admit that it's not the most elegant system (nor does it make much sense given the setting); but when taken in context with the game as a whole, it is hardly the turdfest which some posters are so eager to point out. Games are often more than the sum of their parts, and it's a shame to see gamers missing out on a fun experience because they've decided to latch on to some negative bullet point tossed about in an internet forum.
As for my own experience with the game's leveling system, I will have to concede to those posters that say it can lead to problematic situations. I've found myself in some tough spots due to any combination of crap equipment, overpowered/overleveled enemies, unfair amount of tough enemies, and so on.
However, I discovered that any of these tough situations can easily be tackled through a fair bit of vigilance on the part of the player. Awareness of your surroundings, awareness of your equipment, awareness of your enemies strengths and numbers, and awareness of your own personal ability. Hey now....that's starting to sounds a bit like a real zombie survival game! I started to see those tough spots less as a product of poor design decisions, and more as a way of spicing up the challenge of the game.
I'm afraid that this game isn't going to get the gaming community's appreciation that it deserves, due to a shaky start on the PC front and misappropriated poor word of mouth.
TL,DR: It's true that Dead Island has various balance issues; however, when taken in context of the game as a whole, they have a minor impact on the overall experience. The game isn't for everyone, but I would caution others against totally discounting it based on a handful of negative points being blown out of proportion.
