So, I've been noticing this recently, and it's been bothering me - people signing their forum posts by putting their name at the end of it. It's annoying because it's completely pointless. I can already see your name, click on your user page, see everything that you want to put on this site there.

There is utterly no reason to repeat what people can already see by looking about five centimetres away from the signing. The only reason I can see for doing this is if you think you're so important that just seeing your name once isn't enough.

What do you people think about signing your posts? If it wasn't clear, I think it's a pointless, superfluous habit.

If the site actually had a signature function, it wouldn't be annoying. But it's like going out of your way to do something that the site has deliberately avoided doing.

EDIT: People seem to be reading some sort of alternate reality version of this post where I call everybody who does it stupid and pretentious. Am I in the same dimension as everybody? I just want to make sure.

EDIT 2: Signing your post in reply thinking you're being funny wasn't clever when the first guy did it. Doing it as the forty-seventh is below "not clever".

I think it's pointless too, but it doesn't actually bother me. It's just not something that affects me, either way.

However, I do wish The Escapist would allow forum signatures here. Plenty of other forums have them, so why not here? I don't see how it's any different to allowing an avatar, and I'd love to have a cool custom self-made signature picture with my posts... :)

Well its not like it'll make a difference seeing as no one knows who I am, but I think it's pointless and redundant anyway.

I'm not one to sign my posts, but I think it's because a lot of forums have a signature function that carries with every post (I actually think the escapist has it, but doesn't use it for whatever reason). From this I'll assume that it's to add something else to their post that further separates it from the posts of others in a text-based forum where you would be hard-pressed to determine who made a post just based on the content.

The way I see it, your posts will stand out eventually as you continue to post in the same style over time.

If it bothers you, why not just send a private message to the people who do it and request that they stop?
Because that would be incredibly time consuming and make me look like a bit of a prick in that I just took the time to specifically send a message to a single person about their posting habit.

Erm... because sometimes I just feel like doing that for longer posts, and all of my PM's? There's nothing pretentious about me doing that. Its just what I do. :/

No, but they don't add anything to the end of their post. They just put their name again. This doesn't differentiate them, it makes them look stupid. Sure, they're standing out from the crowd, but they're standing out from the crowd due to a slightly obnoxious habit. It's like standing in a room and saying your name after everything you say.

I think it's pointless as well... but so are the ellipses I use in place of everything...

While I think its somewhat pointless, I have no issues with anyone using it.

And despite me thinking signatures are pointless, I probably have one if I could.

Putting a signature on the end of your posts is fine, if it is not your username (some quote or sarcastice remark about life is fine).

Ellipses are the greatest form of punctuation. I use them all the time!

Yeah, I can't see why you need a pointless signature. Maybe people are insecure.

If they want to waste their time by signing their posts, then so be it. No skin off my back. I personally sign my personal message's, but nothing else.

What if your username IS your name?

OT: I'd have a signature if I could. Only it would be a picture of the One Ring inscription instead of my name.

It irritates me too, not that I've seen many people do it on here.

There's something about it that feels incredibly arrogant, and I'm not sure what it is. It's like you're declaring your own post worthy or something; it's very strange.

I agree with you in that it's pointless, but I think it's more a difference in opinions between those that think it's obnoxious and those that think it's unique/a good way to stand out. I've got no strong opinion either way really, just slightly irked by it at most.

Stylistic choice, been doing it for a decade, not about to stop now. You are welcome to not read it, if it bothers you so much.

-m

edit: as far as I'm concerned, my '-m' signals the completion of a thought. It's a punctuation mark on my post. I usually spend some time thinking about what I'm going to say, and signing off on it indicates that I've considered what I'm typing, and am making those thoughts permanent. That's also why I edit behind the sig. Additions or modifications to my original comment come after the comment was made, but the original comment stands.
