I have high hopes for this game

I mean for someone who has enjoyed Silent Hill: Shattered Memories AND Alpha Protocol, I will probably like this game.

Combat plays out just like you'd expect in a survival horror game. Murphy can hold one weapon at a time, such as a crowbar or pipe, and all weapons have limited durability. However, Murphy's inaccurate striking abilities don't make him a very good warrior. Fighting should be avoided whenever possible in Downpour, with boss battles mostly taking place through QTE.
FFFFFFFFFFFFFFFFFFFFFFFFFUUUUUUUUU

Degrading weapons and quick time events??
That is huge glowing warning sign saying that this game will suck.

Oh Silent Hill, what happened to you??? D:
How is that a sign the game will suck? Both of those things can make a great and enjoyable game experience when done correctly, so explain to me how that signals the game will suck?

OT: I have never played a Silent Hill game, they came out when i was about 3 or 4 so I never really got a chance to play one of the good ones. Hopefully this will be like number 2 which is allegedly the scariest one, so i can finally see what the big fuss about the franchise is.

PS: Anyone else got the feeling the protagonist will probably have been falsely imprisoned? Maybe he was framed for a crime or he has a weird relation to the town, I can't tell, but I'm predicting he was falsely imprisoned.

You've arrived at a cross roads. At one end of the street are officers of the law, who will take you, a convicted felon into custody. And at the other is a road sign that reads welcome, to Silent Hill.

If you want to hear a little friendly advice, turn yourself in.

Yeah, the whole quick time events thing is just going to make him tear it apart. :D

Oh yay QTEs and water levels....
I don't mean to sound like a dick but what's exactly wrong with a water level? I kinda like them but I'm a sucker for water.... :D

LOL
I'm not against weapon degradation as long as it's reasonable, but how does a crowbar degrade and break from hitting a squishy creature? A crowbar is already dull AND bent!
I don't play the SH games, but I assume there aren't a lot of lava or acid monsters. Maybe the pc just tosses his bludgeon if the paint gets chipped?

An interesting way to do it would be to have your melee weapon possibly become lodged in the enemies body when you kill it, causing you to have to extricate it and risk further attack by another enemy. So you'd have to decide whether to risk a few seconds pulling your axe out of a monsters ribs or run for it and maybe come back later, making engaging more than one enemy extremely unfavourable.

Honestly, neither the degrading weapons, nor the QTEs bug me off much. I think the problem most people have with QTE is repetition. Using the exact same animation palette over and over again can get pretty boring. A minimal approach combined with uniqueness in animation can, in theory, be much more effective and provide tension during the boss fights.

I'm looking forward to the game myself. I think the series has suffered a few nasty blows (I'm looking at you Homecoming and Origins),but Shattered Memories restored my hope for the future of the series. Hopefully the gents at Vatra will create something unique and fresh, something that will add to the Silent Hill experience, rather than...blah, blah PIRAMID HEAD IS SO AWESUM YO LETS PUT HIM IN EVERY SINGLE GAME, ALSO BOOBZ... fan service.

Also, one other thing. I don't think Yamaoka is scoring this one, him working for Grashopper and all.

Indeed. I have quite a bit of experience with crowbars* and they are certainly very durable contraptions.

*not that I use crowbars for beating things to death. But you know what I mean.

It will probably be the first Silent Hill game that I pick up.
...though honestly; It's time for QTE's to die, never to return!

Using QTE for boss fights is a cheap way to let the world know that you officially suck at programming boss AI routines. Its a crutch, that unlike the weapons in this game doesn't seem to have a limited durability.

Memorable boss fights involve the player overcoming the boss in various ways, not doing the exact thing the programmer thinks you should in order to trigger the QTE (and then do the same exact thing 2 or 3 more times ala EVERY ACTION GAME MADE IN THE LAST 5 YEARS).

Could you imagine a Zelda game where the final battle involved QTEs? The fights in Wind Waker and Spirit Tracks are almost like that since you need to have Zelda help you in a very specific way, and both fights are not as fun as others in the series.

How about Fatal Frame or Siren? Those bosses take concentration and timing.

How is it scary when you know all you need to do to win is flail madly until you see "press X to win" on the screen?

With the weapon durability, I didn't mind so much in Origins because I liked the game. I also had enough spare weapons to never really care. If I can only carry one weapon in the new game then that would certainly create tension and I can appreciate that.

I just imagine a humorous amount of random thwacking sticks littered all over, when I'd much rather have to look hard to find one that doesn't break, and then find a pointier one later on.

Anyways this article has pretty much killed any interest I had in the game. Shattered Memories and Homecoming having already killed my interest in the series in general of course.

I do like the the change in style, at least. I also like how and escaped prisoner's "dark" Silent Hill resembles a prison. I'll probably get it either way.

Im hoping it will move from pop up scares back to the classic mindfuck gameplay. QTE pissed me off but im willing to let it slide mainly because it seems like this silent hill may be like its originals. Creepy, I changed my display picture to pyramid head last night, now today this is here. -cue fallout new vegas wild wasteland sound-

As long as the czechs dont fuck with the lore. If they put pyramid head in this one I will be very sad. (He wasnt meant to be in the movie OR in Homecoming. He was a personal demon for James, a symbol of his guilt and his eternal punishment.)

Also, I think the rain will replace the otherworld shifts, like the contractions in SH3 and -sigh- the siren in the movie.

Fingers crossed cameo appearance of Heather (Cheryl, Alessa) She was kickass

The DAMP Silent Hill! The horror.

Looks like someone in the dev team played Heavy Rain. /obvious joke I'm sure someone made already.

Seriously, though, this does look interesting, and like more of a return to the Silent Hill I know and love. Rain is certainly a better concept in a horror game than ice, anyway. I will never understand the idea of the ice otherworld from Shattered Memories...

Konami's next Silent Hill game will be as scary as always
I stopped reading here. Silent Hills stopped being scary on SH2, with SH3 catching up on last breath. The rest is just...not scary.
I respectfully disagree. I found Silent Hill 4: The Room to be the scariest game in the whole series, even over SH1 & 2 (although SH2 is imo the better game). In terms of how scary they are I'd list them: 4, 1, 2, 3, everything else, descending. Of course, fear is completely subjective, so one person's terrifying may be another's slow-drying pink paint.
Of course I respect your opinion, but for me, the scariest part of The Room was, well The Room. It was the new element of the gameplay which worked pefectly. But rest ? Uh, gruesome at best but not scary. While story was great, the gameplay lacked in "monstrosity department". The ghosts, the rubber face are just meh. The "shrooms" were meant to be "out of place scary", felt just out of place. Even the nurses suck.
But the prize no.1 goes to "Twin victims", the worst "monster" in sh history. The next problem is that these monsters often attack "en masse", and give a plenty of "tells" that they are coming.

And problems of both Homecoming and Shattered Memories were nicely pointed out by Yathzee in his reviews.
