I love me some Megadeth. They've had an impact on my own guitar playing and they've had an even bigger effect on the rock and metal world as a whole with greats like Marty Friedman, Chris Broderick, Dave Mustaine, etc. But I love how Dave Mustaine founded the band purely out of spite towards Metallica (he was kicked out by everyone else).

What are your favourite music groups that either have stupid but awesome music or were formed for dumb reasons?

I present to you the brilliance of Austrian Death Machine, a band that was formed solely to write metal based on movies that Arnold Schwarzeneger has been in.

Surprisingly this is actually a genre...there's at least a couple of decent bands that do this.

Ylvis I believe wins the award for silliest band in existence. For those of you who are unaware they sing The Fox.

Knights of the Abyss sing the most stupid and vulgar lyrics ever, yet their music itself is awesome.

Just listen to it!

This thread also wouldn't be complete without a mention to Weird Al

Attila (well the not so much their new album) all they sing about is partying and drinking and getting laid. But damn, the music isn't half bad and the vocals are killer. Plus, they put on a great live show.

Primus - Very talented musicians that do songs about....well, you figured it out. Their stuff makes no sense but sounds great.

Psyhostick - I think these guys find objects lying around the house then write songs about them. Humorous especially since they're a bit on the metal side.

Steel Panther - Pretty heavily exaggerated 80's hair-metal theme going on. I find it entirely impossible to sing a long with any of their songs without feeling like a smug douche, which is all kinds of fun.

Still, they can be so romantic sometimes.
(Not my favorite version of the song, but it is the official video.)

I quite like Ylvis, A surprising amount of people are treating "What does the fox say" seriously, though... Also, Primus and Weird Al are pretty great.

We Butter the Bread with Butter and Shemales from Outta Space of Death are both German electro-deathcore-kinda bands which don't take themselves seriously at all.

Much of WBTBWB's first album was covering nursery rhymes. Though it looks like they've started taking themselves more seriously now that one of the founding members has left. Which I disapprove of.

On a less-heavy note, Lemon Demon is Neil Cicierega's band, and it's just real good.

I really like Attila's sound, but every time I actually listen to the lyrics I feel like a total scumbag for listening to them.

What do you get when you take the frontman of Blur and team him up with the co-creator of Tank Girl?
The fictional band...

Oh... They're not silly in the "traditional" sense... The fact that this idea of a band started out as some kind of "project" to counteract against MTV at the time of its inception is just one of the minor reasons that makes me enjoy this fictional band even more than how I was enjoying them just a few seconds ago...

GLOB DAMMIT do I love this band! SO MUCH!!!

Mentioning Mike Patton without mentioning the gonzo tower of strange awesomeness that was Faith No More? Blasphemy, I say! Blasphemy!

(Particularly the songs Land of Sunshine, Caffiene, Be Aggressive, A Small Victory, RV, and Crack Hitler from this album)

Can't forget Alestorm and Gloryhammer here. You Are a Pirate and Unicorn Invasion of Dundee are hilariously awesome for some reason. And I'd link them, but I'm currently being lazy.

Does that make me weird that I love that CD but I don't really think they are that strange.. hmm maybe that Doctor was right.
Don't forget Gwar and Green Jello/Jelly.

Well...Faith No More is comparably normal considering that everything that Mike does is in someway strange. Like he doing weird metal-hip-hop [http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=kRwXBoDghXc], covers of Italian pop songs from the 70s complete with Big Band [http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=RoLzqso_bsk] or just extremely weird stuff with John Zorn [http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=0fRPLpO70Gc]...

Now since I'm at it...more weird sillyness...
