Skipping the Main Oblivion Plotline

A year and a half ago, my friend suggested a game called Oblivion, telling me it was one of their favourite games that if I didn't get it, I was essentially an outcast in the gaming world. He was a bit of a tosser and in the end he had a go at me trying to get me banned from Xbox... he failed and as to get back at him, I turned his friends against him... where was I going again?... Oh yeah! So a year ago I decided to buy the game anyway, despite my hatred for the person who recommended it, I'd heard good things and decided to give it a try.

I got back home and put the disc in my computer. After an hour, the game had been installed and I was ready to play. I LOVED this game, I played it again, and again, and again and again. But I didn't like the game for what it was trying to do, I hated the storyline, the combat, the speech system etc. What I loved, were the Guilds. The Assassins Guild, The Thieves Guild and The Arena were my favourites, and I also really enjoyed the side quests. But the main storyline was dire. It was incredibly boring and frankly too linear for my liking, the Oblivion portals were all the same - but with scaled levels etc.

I stopped playing the game a few months ago, but a few days ago, I had an urge to come back to it. I just fancied performing another murder, or completing another Mage quest. However I feel kind of shallow coming back to the game and not completing the story...

So:

Should I finish the game? (I'd say I'm approximately 40% through it) [br]
Did you finish the main plotline yourself?[br]
Is the ending worth the hours put in?[br]
What were your thoughts on the Main storyline as a whole?

As far as i'm aware noone really bothers with the Main story. Once you know how the game works just run off and do some random quests and work your way through guilds.

I think last time i was level 10 before i did the first main quest xD Only reason i get it at all is to make the Oblivion Gates appear, they're fun on occasions.

First time I played through I went on the main storyline for a bit until something bugged out, then I realised it wasn't important and spent time on the sidequests and never bothered with the main storyline again.

I'd say you should, being worshipped by everyone feels really good. Also there are some big battles where you have NPCs to help you that provide a good deal of entertainment

Did you finish the main plotline yourself?
Yes once, the second time I went around shutting Oblivion portals

Is the ending worth the hours put in?
I'd say so

What were your thoughts on the Main storyline as a whole?
Escort quests need to die, aside from that it was pretty good, especially when Bruma came under siege and there's that massive battering ram you have to stop.

Do what is fun. The best part of a lot of games are doing the fun little side quests and bonus things.

I actually just do a bit of the main quest, then go off and do random guild quests and whenever I feel like it, return to the main story line.

Just play however you want. I personally didn't find the main story to be that engaging.

I still haven't beaten the main quest of the 3rd one even. I get as far along as I'm required, and as soon as I'm set loose I'm off into the wilderness to screw around how I like.

i play oblivion for the RP and i have logged WELL over 1000 hours on it (i know im a loser) and ya know what ive gone all the way through the main quest 4 times, in 1000+ hours ive only gone all the way 4 times! don't feel bad the guilds are much better done and if you don't feel compelled to finish just use some paint brushes to get in to the temples ceiling in the temple district and see the ending lol

I think I'm level 21 in my current game and I've done maybe 2 of the main story quests. It's worth playing.

Main story: "Follow Baurus into the Imperial Sewers"

Me: "Screw that! I'm going to see what's in that Alyeid ruin over there!"

And then I modded the hell out of it. I still haven't completed the sewer bit, yet.

I always did the main quest up to the part where you get the azuras star, duped it, then i just did my own thing. the story isn't really great to be honest, but the game itself is pretty awesome.

I got the registry error bug on a game with under 100 hours.
I don't want to go through that uninteresting quest nonsense again.

The story is very "meh"...indeed all the writing in Oblivion with the exception of the Dark Brotherhood questline is "yeah yeah, shut up and tell me what you want fetched and/or dead."

I played all the way through the main quest and all the major guild sidequests, modded the holy fuck out of the game...and now mainly hang out in the Great Forest/Imperial Reserve shooting animals. It's relaxing.

Main quest in games like Oblivion and Fo3 are purely for story
Beat it
No reason to do it again
- I completed the Main Quest twice only for the final boss fight you dont participate in -

I never finished it because I got tired of martin following me around so I told him to wait here somewhere when I was escorting him to cloud ruler temple.
I forgot where I put him so he's probably still wandering around in the wilderness somewhere.
I did just about everything else though.
Maybe one day i'll find him...

I beat every quest in the entire game.

My favorite part was the Dark Brotherhood and the Thieves guild. I remade characters over and over to beat those two guilds again and again and would then quit.

That said how can you call yourself a fan if you never beat the game? Lol.

Yes finish the story.

Did you finish the main plotline yourself?

I did.

Is the ending worth the hours put in?

Most of my hours were put in AFTER finishing the main story.

What were your thoughts on the Main storyline as a whole?
Worse that Morrowind, which brings me to what i want to get at.

If you like oblivion you will enjoy Morrowind even more (if you can get past the older graphics). I wasted a whole summer on a saved game that has the main story line broken because i had killed so many of the important characters. I probly put in twice as much time in Morrowind that summer than I have in total with Oblivion.

Fortunately, I did get to complete the main story as there is a way around killing Vivec....
