Part of me thinks Bethesda did it this way to play it safe. If they make it possible to kill children in their own game, it may potentially cause problems for them; negative publicity or censorship at the least, and worst case scenario, a law suit of some kind. People have sued companies for less. It's already an R18 game, or whatever the rating is called over yonder, but why push sensitive buttons if you can let third party modders do it for you? Being as big into establishing modding communities around their games as Bethesda is, it is no surprise that some kid would eventually come forth and do Bethesda's work for them. The public gets their shot at killing kids, and Bethesda gets deniability. It'll be the same for all the nudity and porn mods that will inevitably come.

Other games like "Fallout 2" allowed you to kill kids if you wanted to, and really we've been seeing the game industry backpedaling from things like that. At one time Bethesda was one of the edgier game developers.

You are aware Fallout 2 was not made by Bethesda right?
OT: Personally, I don't really care. I won't download the mod myself because it is not a big deal to me, but I can understand why some would want it, whether it be for realism or to get the brats to shut the hell up (they REALLY annoy me too), so no skin off my back if someone decides to download it, just not really worth taking the time to hunt down and install it in my opinion.

The devs at Bethesda are people, people who probably arent comfortable with children dying.

It's not just a moral thing. It's that Bethesda is afraid of really bad press. I mean look at Mass Effect for Chrissake and how Fox News overreacted to a 5 second sex scene. Skyrim being marketed as a "Babykiller simulator" is not the kind of press they want

It's the same reason why Grand Theft Auto games dont have children, schools or animals in them.

In all likelyhood, they'd kill someone anyway, game or no game.

I recall a news story a while back about this man who murdered someone, and they blamed Manhunt since it came out recently. When they searched his house they actually found out the man didn't play video games and never even heard of Manhunt. But surprisingly the victim owned a copy of the game.

i reckon you should be able to off kids - but of course i understand why bethesda didnt want to put it in if it was there, you should have the whole town turn on you permanently for doing it, that way at least you have the choice but it's a pretty shitty one

personally id be fine if someone could just mod the kids so that all they could say was stuff like "hi mister!" and not much else (no douchebaggery) then maybe they wouldn't grind my gears so much

I'm fine with Bethesda drawing a line with its internal development and letting modders do whatever they want. I suspect most people think the same, including the modders. Is this really an issue?

I'd say so; not everyone is playing it on PC. I'm sure that there are plenty of console players who are very annoyed by the fact that children can't be killed.

If a developer is too scared to allow children to be killed, then they shouldn't have them in the game... at least in a game like Skyrim.

Well of course, no one wants to be associated with a game where you can kill children, its still not being afraid of controversy, its being a smart person, how exactly would killing children actually improve the experience in any way, apart from stirring up controversy?
I could understand if it showed kids dying, to drive home a point, as Modern Warfare 3 apparently has, but killing them yourself? Theres no need for it to be in there

I never understood why Bethesda has omitted infanticide from their games. Pretending that children aren't killed is worse than implementing a system whereby every resident turns on you when you do so. Kind of like Fallout 2, where you got a massive bounty the moment you killed a young 'un. More or less like real life.

I never kill children in games unless I have to (storywise: Tales of the Abyss) but I'm always damn pissed off if they are immortal -.-

I stopped reading here. I don't want to kill kids, neither does my tolerant Nord sword swinger or my lazy Imperial ranger. My slightly insane pyromaniac Dunmer however does not discriminate.

It's not about being able to kill children, it's about not being able to kill them. If that makes sense? I can hunt dragons, deer, rabbits and slaughter entire communities of bandits, townsfolk and tribals. I can wipe every NPC off the face of Skyrim, but children will always be there to put limitations on what I can do.

I'm just as pissed off about not being able to kill virtual children as I am about not having a seperate hotkey menu for my spells and shouts. It's a game mechanic and what I do in game has no reflection on my personality. That and I can differentiate between reality and fiction...

It's not that I want to kill kids; I just want the option to. Because in a game like Skyrim, invincible children just don't fit.

Something needs to change. If adults (including elderly people in GTA, for example) can be killed in a video game, so can children.
